Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 09:22 (eighteen years ago)

Frankly I'm not sure why I put Momus in there since he's from Paisley...

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 09:23 (eighteen years ago)

A considerably weaker lineup than Glasgow. But Fish it is.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 09:52 (eighteen years ago)

Fuck off and die, Geir. Keep off my threads.

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 10:07 (eighteen years ago)

A fine list, a difficult choice...

2for25, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 10:29 (eighteen years ago)

Though feel free to bypass Arab Strap who actually come from Falkirk...*sssssssiiiiiiiggggggggghhhhhhh MC drink your coffee before starting to compile polls*...

(this is also an obvious cue for Best Of Falkirk/Stirlingshire [though that might be a two-horse race between the Strap and the Cocteaus] and Best Of Fife polls but I'll leave those to others...)

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 10:35 (eighteen years ago)

fish is from dalkeith.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 11:17 (eighteen years ago)

(a) it's close enough
(b) if it was good enough for the SCE board it's good enough for me
(c) Fish's sister worked in the same hospital as me back in the eighties

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 11:19 (eighteen years ago)

the answer is probably khaya. fucking hell, this reminds me why i moved to glasgow.

grimly fiendish, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 11:40 (eighteen years ago)

i like the rezillos and finitribe!

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 11:50 (eighteen years ago)

jesse garon & the desperadoes!

zappi, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 11:51 (eighteen years ago)

and therefore also the Fizzbombs? I like them better than JG & D.

EXPLOITED BARMY ARMY!

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 12:02 (eighteen years ago)

Which reminds me - one of the great TOTP performances.

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 12:06 (eighteen years ago)

Shop Assistants, for Safety Net alone

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

went for Josef K. Wendys come close tho. Their second album, Sixfoot Wingpsan on Starshaped Records, deserves a listen, not least coz they do a passable cover of Can's You Doo Right.

Grandpont Genie, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

The Thanes should be up there.

Soukesian, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

Voted for Win, though ISB and Finitribe were in contention too.

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

I will always rep shoppies.

Saxby D. Elder, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Sunday, 3 February 2008 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

Josef K or ISB.

Dan S, Sunday, 3 February 2008 08:05 (eighteen years ago)

Khaya seconded! Hi dere grimly. Gilded Lil had their moments, I seem to remember.

byebyepride, Sunday, 3 February 2008 08:55 (eighteen years ago)

Rezillos, for me. Classic singles and a great LP.

Soukesian, Sunday, 3 February 2008 13:58 (eighteen years ago)

Fire Engines, of course.

dan selzer, Sunday, 3 February 2008 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

Though if I didn't have anything invested in it I'd probably say Josef K.

dan selzer, Sunday, 3 February 2008 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

Rezillos for me!

miryam, Sunday, 3 February 2008 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

fire engines pip josef k to the post. shame about missing out the prats.

stirmonster, Sunday, 3 February 2008 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

I voted scars.

Would have thought idlewild would have been on the poll.

Sandy Blair, Sunday, 3 February 2008 18:36 (eighteen years ago)

Oh and Boards of Canada maybe?

Sandy Blair, Sunday, 3 February 2008 18:38 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Monday, 4 February 2008 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

exploited - ha ha ha!

stirmonster, Monday, 4 February 2008 10:25 (eighteen years ago)

BARMY ARMY!!!!

Mark G, Monday, 4 February 2008 10:26 (eighteen years ago)

Idlewild should have been in but Boards Of Canada are a borderline case since the Pentland Hills have equal claim to Lothian and Lanarkshire status.

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 4 February 2008 10:27 (eighteen years ago)

PUNK'S NOT DEAD, I KNOW IT'S NOT

Colonel Poo, Monday, 4 February 2008 10:46 (eighteen years ago)

I recall that Tony Blackburn really enjoyed having to play "Dead Cities" for weeks on end when he did the Top 40 show.

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 4 February 2008 11:42 (eighteen years ago)

"weeks on end" mmmm...

Mark G, Monday, 4 February 2008 11:43 (eighteen years ago)

It was in the Fun 40 for three weeks. To Blackburn that was equivalent to a lifetime - cf. "Flowers Of Romance" which was on the Top 40 for two months earlier the same year.

Curiously neither has yet surfaced in any of Dale's in-depth looks at 1981 on POTP.

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 4 February 2008 11:47 (eighteen years ago)

PETITION!

Mark G, Monday, 4 February 2008 11:48 (eighteen years ago)

Boards of Canada are from penicuik, aren't they? Which is a damned sight closer to Edinburgh than Falkirk, for one. (Arab Strap on an Edinburgh list?)
No Idlewild, Ballboy, Khaya, Desc or Saint Jude's Infirmary on the list?
I dunno.

treefell, Monday, 4 February 2008 11:55 (eighteen years ago)

"No place like Penicuik - for double or triple gla-ZING! (yeah)"

I know my Radio Clyde adverts.

Official response from Mr Winton:
"Hmm - Dead Cities and Flowers Of Romance...they were a bit unusual, but we all loved them!"

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 4 February 2008 12:12 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe Wattie will google this one day

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 4 February 2008 16:35 (eighteen years ago)

UK82 lurkers represent

Colonel Poo, Monday, 4 February 2008 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

And yet, when WORLD CHANGING KURT needed a hand, to whom did he turn? BIG JOHN THAT'S WHO! Thus The Exploited changed the face of music far more markedly than their late 1981 chart mates, e.g. B.A. Robertson featuring Maggie Bell.

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 4 February 2008 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

Nice that theres one vote for Linlithgow's finest, cindytalk. If we'd had proportional voting I'd have maybe given The Freeze a 3rd or 4th vote.

Gordon Sharp is a top bloke right enough.

Was there no other pre punk Edinburgh bands?

Sandy Blair, Monday, 4 February 2008 17:49 (eighteen years ago)

Boards of Canada are from penicuik, aren't they?

they're from balerno. as am i.

stirmonster, Monday, 4 February 2008 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

I thought we talked about this Dingbod?

BERT JANSCH!!!!!!!!

DICK GAUGHAN!!!!!!!

ISB would have got my vote, if this poll had been up for more than 30 minutes.

Tom D., Tuesday, 5 February 2008 09:54 (eighteen years ago)

It's all gone Leith-shaped.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 10:42 (eighteen years ago)

stir, would Mount Florida be counting as Edinburgh or Glasgow then?

Obviously I would have voted for them...

Sandy Blair, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 20:55 (eighteen years ago)

mount florida would definitely count as glasgow.

i've lived more than half my life in glasgow and think of myself as glaswegian even if my fellow glaswegians still think of me as an east coast interloper.
