Can anyone describe that incredibly annoying female singing and its sources, is this Cat Power's doing? Freak folk? It's like this cloying "little girl" style that is everywhere...there must be a special circle of hell for people who create ads

I totally called this out in some other thread awhile back. At the time there was like 3 or 4 ads currently running that all had female singers with Cat Power/Feist-type voices. It's definitely a trend.

let's discuss this over brunch

At least the trend is moving away from the Sheryl Crow/Alanis Morrisette voices, although Cat Power is no improvement. (I forget the product, but remember that shitty female-sung version of "People Got To Be Free" that turned up in some TV ad a few years ago?)

this has been the dominant trend in music for mobile phone adverts for a few years now. haven't noticed it so much for other products..

This trend may have been discussed in other threads, but I figure the faux-naif, indie folky shtick nonsense that has permeated loads of ads is part of the same scourge as the "indie" singing.
Specifically rubbish like this:

Their combined efforts sound like a load of shite AND they give themselves a big round of applause at the end. Gah.
If I never hear another glockenspiel/melodica/kids drum kit in a TV ad it will be too fucking soon.

"indie" doesn't mean anything when describing music. let's just use "pop/rock" from now on.
― nicky lo-fi, Thursday, 31 January 2008 09:08 (eighteen years ago)
T.I., LCD Soundsystem, the White Stripes, Cat Power, all "pop/rock"
― nicky lo-fi, Thursday, 31 January 2008 09:10 (eighteen years ago)
Devendra Banhart, Panda Bear, Burial, Blink 182, all "pop/rock"
