i can't really justify loving this album. i saw the movie when i was 8 and i had to ask my 12-year-old cousin what "we made out under the dock" meant. my sister and i talked my dad into getting the soundtrack. travolta was so cool. i was maybe too young for an actual crush on olivia, but i had the 8-year-old version of one.

tipsy mothra, Thursday, 31 January 2008 02:16 (eighteen years ago)

ez, "Grease" itself is totally underrated. Barry Gibb.

dell, Thursday, 31 January 2008 02:18 (eighteen years ago)

gibb + frankie valli, what a combo.

hopelessly devoted is pretty classic too.

"Beauty School Dropout"

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 31 January 2008 15:37 (eighteen years ago)

I shamelessly pick "Hopelessly Devoted to You".

Euler, Thursday, 31 January 2008 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

Frankie Valli (with bros gibb) takes this.

^^ this or 'grease'.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 31 January 2008 15:50 (eighteen years ago)

songs added for the film: "grease," "hopelessly devoted to you," "you're the one that i want," "sandy." cheers to hollywood money men saying 'we need a single!'

tipsy mothra, Thursday, 31 January 2008 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

Heavy rotation of "Hopelessly..." at the radio station I worked at at the time forced me to alter the 45's label to read "Hopelessly Devo To You."

My wife is actually a fan of Grease II, hence my knowledge of most of the lyrics to "We're gonna boooowl tonite!!"

Dan Peterson, Thursday, 31 January 2008 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

frank e. valley by a landslide.

or something, Thursday, 31 January 2008 23:06 (eighteen years ago)

otm. gibb was a genius. he was like a fucking massive-hit-single atm back then.

Lawrence the Looter, Thursday, 31 January 2008 23:36 (eighteen years ago)

yeah that's a great song and it's cool that the actual theme song to this movie is a complete disco track and not a 50's throwback piece

akm, Thursday, 31 January 2008 23:52 (eighteen years ago)

It irritates me that the songs are in a different sequence on the album compared to the film. I want the song order on the album to match the song order of the film.

I voted for "You're The One That I Want", because you can sing it drunk at a kareoke bar and it'll still sound good. You could even sing it drunk at a kareoke bar while yodelling with solids and it would still sound good...

I was gonna try to do a poll of non-Bee Gees Barry Gibb songs,(or at least those ones not originally popularized by the Bee Gees) but I was having trouble finding a comprehensive list of them online. I'll try again, though...I was probably just being lazy in my searching strategies or something.

Like putting "Love Is A..." at the very end rather than the beginning? That is weird indeed. Even weirder that "Grease" itself appears twice - no doubt they didn't want to make it difficult for disco DJs to drop the needle at the very start.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Sunday, 3 February 2008 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

i fucking hate this movie, but..."summer nights"

latebloomer, Sunday, 3 February 2008 00:07 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't see "We Go Together" at first, so I went with "Look at Me I'm Sandra Dee" - only for the reference in the first Mr. Bungle album's lyric sheet.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Sunday, 3 February 2008 00:27 (eighteen years ago)

I fucking love this movie and I voted "There Are Worse Things I Could Do" for being the criminally overlooked ballad and for Rizz being phwoaaaar.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 3 February 2008 00:34 (eighteen years ago)

How many times have a been in a punk club at 2 in morning and looked across the room to find a bunch of hardass tattooed bettypagecoifed chicks entranced by VH1 rebroadcast? More than a few times. Its the secret history of psychobilly and garage punk: if the gals didn't come by their first crushes backed by the pseudo50s sound, the boys wouldn't have had so much encouragement to play it.

"You're the One That I Want" mixes rollerdisco and rollederby the best.

bendy, Sunday, 3 February 2008 02:42 (eighteen years ago)

both the movie and play are pretty dumb but the movie is a lot more retarded than the play. the songs penned for the movie didn't even fit the time period it took place in (Hopelessly Devoted and You're the One That I Want)

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 3 February 2008 05:15 (eighteen years ago)

you think that's bad the songs in jesus christ superstar aren't even in aramaic.

Of course, Grease is the hotness. But I kinda wish that Sandy or Stranded at the Drive-In had received a single vote. But, in democracy you only get 1 vote, yo. (per login).

Bobbi Peru, Monday, 4 February 2008 06:46 (eighteen years ago)

me too.

tipsy mothra, Monday, 4 February 2008 07:53 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't vote, but would almost have had trouble finding anything worth voting for.

The original "Grease" songs are all boring late 50s/early 60s Brill Bulding/doo-wop, so obviously none of them. Means it'd have to be one of the three newly written 1978 songs and I guess I'd gone for "Hopelessly Devoted To You".
