An album I loved at 17, I recently listened to again, and thought wellll, if there were less of Billy's occasional cringe-inducing lyrics here and there and less of the whole shrill nasaltastic-ness of his voice at certain points, that it would be a significantly better album. Then I thought, hey, well what if it were just purely instrumental (and not so long either) all the way through. . .??
― Michael_Pemulis, Thursday, 31 January 2008 02:26 (eighteen years ago)
I would have to give it a proper listen to answer fairly, but my primary issue w/regards to Smashing Pumpkins is that there are some great songs happening there if (with some exceptions) Corgan's vocals could only be replaced with someone less nasally and whiny-sounding.
― dell, Thursday, 31 January 2008 02:33 (eighteen years ago)
I'm fine with dude's voice, album wouldn't sound right w/ no vocals or some more soothing or trained-sounding voice, ain't broke don't fix it.
― Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 31 January 2008 02:41 (eighteen years ago)
The vocals are perfect on this album, what are you talking about???
― If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Thursday, 31 January 2008 02:51 (eighteen years ago)
i would say someone answered my prayers and then i still probably wouldn't listen to it.
DOH! i forgot about my own self-imposed exile from pumpkins threads!
forget i was here.
― scott seward, Thursday, 31 January 2008 02:58 (eighteen years ago)
very profound thread here
― winston, Thursday, 31 January 2008 03:03 (eighteen years ago)
OMG THIS IS SUCH A GOOD QUESTIN
― Surmounter, Thursday, 31 January 2008 03:05 (eighteen years ago)
I was just thinking that it would have been this really epic "post-rock" album....I guess it may not work for all the songs like Disarm or maybe Today or Cherub Rock....but for the rest of the album, like Quiet, Hummer, Geek USA, Soma...etc. etc. I think it would have turned out fantastically...
― Michael_Pemulis, Thursday, 31 January 2008 03:11 (eighteen years ago)
you are waiting for someone to say mogwai - young team
― winston, Thursday, 31 January 2008 03:12 (eighteen years ago)
i think it would be boring without the vocals
don't get me wrong, i think it's a fantastic record, and the vocals certainly aren't one of my favourite things about it. just that the format of the songs are sort of designed for vocals
― Charlie Howard, Thursday, 31 January 2008 03:51 (eighteen years ago)
I do think it would be kind of interesting if all the vocal melodies were played on an electric cello, with some distortion at the scream-y parts.
I like the album with vocals though.
― Sundar, Thursday, 31 January 2008 04:05 (eighteen years ago)
Wow, my brother was telling me about how Siamese Dream would be so much better as an instrumental album literally 15 minutes ago. Wierd
Billy Corrigan does have a very annoying voice though.
― mehlt, Thursday, 31 January 2008 04:12 (eighteen years ago)
i think the vocals are fine on this album.
― latebloomer, Thursday, 31 January 2008 04:36 (eighteen years ago)
I have no comment at this time. (Beyond, 'the hell?')
― Ned Raggett, Thursday, 31 January 2008 04:37 (eighteen years ago)
I mean, you don't literally mean that you want all the same songs just with the vocals removed, right? Like, so you can just hear the power chords in "Today" over and over with no melody on top? Do people really think this would be a good thing to do to mainstream pop/rock songs? Mogwai at least usually has a little more going on compositionally.
― Sundar, Thursday, 31 January 2008 04:44 (eighteen years ago)
i was thinking how mogwai fear stan = silverfuck instrumental kinda
― winston, Thursday, 31 January 2008 05:02 (eighteen years ago)
ha satan
It would still suck with no vocals. It might be better with better vocals though.
― Alex in SF, Thursday, 31 January 2008 05:04 (eighteen years ago)
boooo
― 6335, Thursday, 31 January 2008 05:07 (eighteen years ago)
alex otm. infact, it would suck even more without vocals
― Zeno, Thursday, 31 January 2008 05:16 (eighteen years ago)
"I have no comment at this time. (Beyond, 'the hell?')"
This can't honestly be shocking to you that some people are bugged by Billy's vocals (and songs.)
― Alex in SF, Thursday, 31 January 2008 05:21 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, but it's a little weird to be dealing with it as an ALBUM, since presumably if you know the album tracks you know the album pretty well and barring some idiosyncratic situation ("they used to always play it at the taco place i worked at") it means you probably like the band. Right?
anyway in answer to the thread, that would fucking suck, you're crazy. Billy kicks ass on this album! Where was that thread about bands you like that you wish had a different lead singer? I never did get a satisfying answer of what kind of singer people who hate Billy imagine the Pumpkins being better with. I guess no singer at all is at least a kind of an answer.
― Doctor Casino, Thursday, 31 January 2008 05:32 (eighteen years ago)
what if we secretly replaced billy corgan's vocals with travis morrison's?
― mookieproof, Thursday, 31 January 2008 05:33 (eighteen years ago)
Am I alone in thinking everything after "Mayonaise" is complete crap?
And yes, this album does A LOT like Young Team.
― Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 31 January 2008 05:38 (eighteen years ago)
"Sweet Sweet" suffers from the fact that I keep wishing it would be "Sweet City Woman," but the chorus of "Silverfuck" is one of the essential parts on this record IMO.
― Doctor Casino, Thursday, 31 January 2008 05:41 (eighteen years ago)
the only pumpkins music I like is the drums and guitar on the first album, and the song "1979"
― nicky lo-fi, Thursday, 31 January 2008 09:31 (eighteen years ago)
The great thing about this album is that Butch Vig overproduced Corgan's vocals to such an extend that he almost polished the whininess out of existence. The vocals sound barely there at times, especially compared to, well, every other Pumpkins record.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 31 January 2008 09:37 (eighteen years ago)
Where is this Smashing Pumpkins taco stand?
― kingkongvsgodzilla, Thursday, 31 January 2008 09:48 (eighteen years ago)
Please tell me it's in a disused ice-cream truck!
― kingkongvsgodzilla, Thursday, 31 January 2008 10:29 (eighteen years ago)
Great thread. I would definitely check it out.
Still kinda kicking myself for passing on the invitation to see Hole and Smashing Pumpkins at the 75 capacity X-Ray Cafe back in '92. Supposedly it's the show at which Kurt and Courtney met.
I just remember thinking "I hate both those bands".
― Nate Carson, Thursday, 31 January 2008 10:42 (eighteen years ago)
It'd be a bit boring with no vocals. It'd be better with a different and better singer though. :)
― Geir Hongro, Thursday, 31 January 2008 10:44 (eighteen years ago)
It would still make for an excellent coaster.
― Alex in NYC, Thursday, 31 January 2008 14:47 (eighteen years ago)
The vox serve their purpose, but I've always paid way more attention to the super-saturated guitar tones. This album was the reason I bought my first fuzz pedal.
― Helltime Redux, Thursday, 31 January 2008 15:55 (eighteen years ago)
I think Siamese Dream is the only Pumpkins album where I wouldn't want to get rid of Corgan's vocals on at least a song or two.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 31 January 2008 15:57 (eighteen years ago)
"Yeah, but it's a little weird to be dealing with it as an ALBUM, since presumably if you know the album tracks you know the album pretty well and barring some idiosyncratic situation ("they used to always play it at the taco place i worked at") it means you probably like the band. Right?"
Wrong. This album played EVERYWHERE when it originally came out. It was impossible to avoid it.
― Alex in SF, Thursday, 31 January 2008 16:01 (eighteen years ago)
"I never did get a satisfying answer of what kind of singer people who hate Billy imagine the Pumpkins being better with."
A less annoying one.
― Alex in SF, Thursday, 31 January 2008 16:04 (eighteen years ago)
God, this has been sounding great to me lately. Bought the reissued vinyl (only $15!) today and if it's not any kind of revelation it's still great to be able to hear this on my good speakers. And god DAMN do those guitars sound beautiful, just a shimmering burning wailing wall of tears and joy and fragility...
― Doctor Casino, Monday, 8 December 2008 04:24 (seventeen years ago)
When they first came out with the early singles, Gish and SD - I actually thought he had an good, unique voice. Like he was one of those guys who was mainly a songwriter but sang because someone had to sing the songs.
I only started to really cringe at his vocals around the MCIS era. Songs like XYU and F*ck You and ode to noone. I think it was around this time when Billy started to really feel competetive with Cobain, and even tried to scream like Cobain. Problem is, Cobain has a great voice (especially for stuff like screaming) and Billy does not.
Now I listen to 99 Floors and the American Gothic stuff and notice that he's really developed into a good singer, he must've taken singing lessons sometime along the line - of course it's too late to dispel the commonly held notion that he sucks at singing.
― redmond, Monday, 8 December 2008 05:10 (seventeen years ago)
he took voice lessons after Mellon Collie but I think they've made his voice worse! he sounds like he's crooning with a mouthful of marbles now. He had such a pretty voice on things like "Rhinoceros."
― Om mani padmetino (Curt1s Stephens), Monday, 8 December 2008 05:53 (seventeen years ago)
Love his vocals on "Starla" especially.
― ilxor, Monday, 8 December 2008 06:18 (seventeen years ago)
