After stumbling on an old magazine article, I was wondering if anyone could tell me more about Deep Step? Apparently it was a brief micro-genre from around the turn of this decade but seems to have vanished since (unless I'm missing something thuddingly obvious). Supposed to sound like a deep house with RnB vocal samples, the result is (according to the magazine piece) quite acidy. I would have thought what with all of the hype surrounding Dubstep at the moment that there would have been some kind of retrospective (I know I'm probably off the mark there but bear with me). I wanted to investigate further as this music was championed by Tom Middleton whose work I very much admire. Looking at Discogs, he turned in a couple of deep step remixes himself.
Can anyone tell me where would be the best start? Any comps?

how is this different from Kerri Chandler, Larry Heard and others from the early to mid 90s?
