Best of Helsinki

I'm including the whole Helsinki metropolitan area here, so the neighbouring cities of Vantaa and Espoo are included too. (They're basically suburbs of Helsinki anyway.)

I voted for Hanoi Rocks, like the other 3 people who do this will.

Noodle Vague, Friday, 1 February 2008 10:26 (seventeen years ago)

I think HIM and The Rasmus are globally the most successful Helsinki bands ever (more popular than Hanoi Rocks ever were), so they might gather a couple of votes.

Tuomas, Friday, 1 February 2008 10:30 (seventeen years ago)

I voted for Giant Robot as I like the name :-)

I have to confess I don't like the 3 bands I'd actually heard; the Rasmus, HIM and Hanoi Rocks.

My favourite Finnish act is probably Bomfunk MCs. Shame they're not from Helsinki :-(

Neither are Lordi it seems. Mayve you should've done a best of Finland, Tuomas, for we are an ignorant lot.

Grandpont Genie, Friday, 1 February 2008 10:35 (seventeen years ago)

Leningrad Cowboys are funny, so I voted for them. There are probably 20 other acts in the list that I'd like better if I ever had heard of them though.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 1 February 2008 10:40 (seventeen years ago)

I thought of including Bomfunk MC's there, but since only their vocalist is originally from Helsinki, that would've been kinda cheating.

Lordi is from originally from Rovaniemi, which is Northern Finland. Though I think they live in Helsinki now, so I might've included them, but they don't feel like a Helsinki band to me.

Tuomas, Friday, 1 February 2008 10:42 (seventeen years ago)

Oh yeah, and we did already do a Finland poll, and Bomfunk was the suprise winner there:

The Best Act (from Finland)

Tuomas, Friday, 1 February 2008 10:43 (seventeen years ago)

Ah.

What are Giant Robot like?

Grandpont Genie, Friday, 1 February 2008 10:44 (seventeen years ago)

They are like big metal man.

Noodle Vague, Friday, 1 February 2008 10:45 (seventeen years ago)

There's not that much metal on the list either, because most of the more famous Finnish metal bands come from the smaller cities and towns. Helsinki is not that metal.

(x-post)

Giant Robot is a dance/electro/rap crew. They've even released and ode to Helsinki:

Though this is the greatest song about Helsinki ever:

Teuvo Loman - Helsinki City Boy

Tuomas, Friday, 1 February 2008 10:51 (seventeen years ago)

Hanoi Rocks, of course.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 1 February 2008 13:26 (seventeen years ago)

Surprised at how few of the Finnish bands I like are from Helsinki. I think Shogun Kunitoki, Brothomstates, Echo Is Your Love and Lackluster are, and I like all of them.

Islaja's "Palaa Aurinkoon" is lovely but there's a chance someone else on ILM might vote for her and I figure nobody else is gonna vote for Larry and the Lefthanded so I might make it them. M.A.Numminen is awesome on paper but I've only heard the early experimental electronic stuff and the tango ("Yes Sir I Can Boogie", "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick" covers) in what I'm informed is deliberately badly pronounced Swedish, and stuck in a room with either of those playing I'd go crazy pretty fast. I guess that's the point?

(I think it's time I took myself to the "I always get those two mixed up" thread on ILE with Pekka Pohjola vs Kimmo Pohjonen, who I was tempted to vote for until I realised that that wasn't actually his name on the list. Sorry Finns!)

a passing spacecadet, Friday, 1 February 2008 14:23 (seventeen years ago)

I tried to look for info about Brothomstates, but couldn't find his hometown mentioned anywhere. Ditto for Ovuca. Some of these electronic artists are kinda hard to pinpoint. I've heard Shogun Kunitoki mentioned by name only, I didn't know they had fans outside Finland. Kimmo Pohjonen is not from Helsinki, I'm pretty sure.

M.A. Numminen's singing is deliberately bad, but usually it's very endearing at the same time. The two covers you mention aren't the best example of that though.

Tuomas, Friday, 1 February 2008 14:51 (seventeen years ago)

Hanoi Rocks! Great memories of seeing them live in the '80's.

Pashmina, Friday, 1 February 2008 14:54 (seventeen years ago)

All of you Hanoi Rocks fans might be interested to know that they've reformed a few years ago (though the singer and the guitarist are the only original members), and released a couple of new albums which have been well received by the critics.

Tuomas, Friday, 1 February 2008 14:57 (seventeen years ago)

Pekka for me. Maybe a best of Pori poll next so we can all vote for Circle?

Matt #2, Friday, 1 February 2008 15:37 (seventeen years ago)

The Pori scene could definitely have a poll of its own, but I'm not that familiar with it.

Tuomas, Friday, 1 February 2008 15:48 (seventeen years ago)

Nightwish aren't from Helsinki either?`

(Just namechecking the few Finnish acts I know about - Arja Saijonmaa anyone? ;) )

Geir Hongro, Friday, 1 February 2008 22:33 (seventeen years ago)

HATE CREW DEATH ROLL!

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 1 February 2008 23:25 (seventeen years ago)

Nightwish are from some small Finnish town, can't remember which one.

Tuomas, Saturday, 2 February 2008 10:50 (seventeen years ago)

Islaja.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

it's gotta be Texas Faggott you guys

stephen, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 01:57 (seventeen years ago)

I thought Wigwam were from Halden and Sarpsborg. :)

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 02:14 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Thursday, 7 February 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

Whoa, that's a major victory! I wonder why Hanoi Rocks didn't do so well in the Best of Finland poll, they got only 3 votes there.

Tuomas, Thursday, 7 February 2008 06:58 (seventeen years ago)

Is Islaja from Helsinki? I thought all of that lot were from Tampere.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 7 February 2008 18:06 (seventeen years ago)

Her record label is in Tampere, but her Myspace page says she lives in Helsinki.
