No Dave Matthews, no credibility.

xhuxk, Friday, 1 February 2008 12:32 (eighteen years ago)

Umahlathini Nabo!

Jazzbo, Friday, 1 February 2008 12:34 (eighteen years ago)

You'd better add Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath before Marcello turns up.

NickB, Friday, 1 February 2008 12:45 (eighteen years ago)

See me in my office, Monday morning, 9 am.

Dingbod Kesterson, Friday, 1 February 2008 12:48 (eighteen years ago)

Springbok Nude Girls

The bare naked ladies south african tribute act?

Mark G, Friday, 1 February 2008 12:48 (eighteen years ago)

The correct answer is Clout anyway.

Grandpont Genie, Friday, 1 February 2008 13:09 (eighteen years ago)

No Zola, no credibility.

MacDara, Friday, 1 February 2008 13:10 (eighteen years ago)

John Kongos.
Dollar Brand/Abdullah Ibrahim.
Elias and his Zig Zag Jive Flutes.

Dingbod Kesterson, Friday, 1 February 2008 13:13 (eighteen years ago)

Kongos is there, I just misspelt his name.

Get your tickets now for the Qkumba Zoo vs Pinski Zoo playoff.

Dingbod Kesterson, Friday, 1 February 2008 13:16 (eighteen years ago)

Weren't Johnny Clegg and Savuka affiliated (i.e. like Huey Lewis and the News)?

Alex in NYC, Friday, 1 February 2008 13:27 (eighteen years ago)

let's get the rock out the way:

I quite like 'the bang', one of the bandmembers went to my university, they do a shimmery, romantic, 'alt 80s'-sorta indiepop thing. with occasional accordian.

'fokofpolisiekar' are a punk rock outfit with enough controversy around 'em to merit whatever credibility you feel punk banks need, though i'm not enough of a punk fun to really rate 'em

plenty people like fuzigish, also a punk bank, though not me. The parlotones are an indie-rock sorta thing, never really struck me.

the rest are to be avoided like the plague: just jinger and watershed are both hopelessly sincere and incredibly dull (jinger attempt the soaring u2 rock ballad thing, watershed are just wimpy soft-rock boneheads)

battery 9, seether, tree63: no, no, no.

rock bands not mentioned that some people might like: the blk jks, who are currently getting some blog-love, indie-ish rock with SA rhythmic influence and 'desmond and the tutus' for pleasant, semi-nonsensical jangle, a little in the style of 'life after buildings' actually - lots of little catch phrases married to hooky riffs, which get juggled around a bunch during a song.

jermainetwo, Friday, 1 February 2008 14:15 (eighteen years ago)

for moody post-triphop, you could definitely do worse than 'lark', who, at their best, craft vaguely mysterious, vaguely menacing melodies, not entirely unlike the knife (plus, say, i dunno, tv on the radio, maybe. though not actually as good as that combination would be)(though the sitek remix of the knife was just ok)

jermainetwo, Friday, 1 February 2008 14:18 (eighteen years ago)

Bay City Rollers in their Duncan Faure period.

Dingbod Kesterson, Friday, 1 February 2008 14:19 (eighteen years ago)

qkumba zoo are a fairly awful band from the mid 90s, who had a hippy/goth thing going on, if i remember, with strange costumes. perhaps they were ahead of their time. i think i remember reading that lil wayne recently sampled on of their songs! wait, no, i think it was actually 'karma' (who was part of 'henry ate', above)(who, again, you should ignore: dull singer-songwritery sincerity)

also, i've your gonna mention tkzee, you should give the rest of kwaito's big names some due: zola, mandoza, unathi, and the late brenda fassie.

sa hiphop worth mentioning: pitch black afro, proverb, godiva, volume.

jermainetwo, Friday, 1 February 2008 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

sa electro and such:

sweatx (the sa equiv of spank rock, for better or worse), the real estate agents (the sa equiv of switch/wonky-house, prob for better), felix laband (the sa equiv of idm)(he's got a todd terje remix worth checking, for the cosmic beards), sibot (more idm), jacob israel (you get the idea)

jermainetwo, Friday, 1 February 2008 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

oh, yeah, springbok nude girl - much liked though personally unappealing 'hard rock' act

jermainetwo, Friday, 1 February 2008 14:27 (eighteen years ago)

girls

jermainetwo, Friday, 1 February 2008 14:27 (eighteen years ago)

What are the Kalahari Surfers like? I've seen their records about in second hand shops.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 1 February 2008 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

xhuxk beat me to it

The Reverend, Friday, 1 February 2008 14:58 (eighteen years ago)

On the minimal techno tip, Alan Abrahams, Bodycod/Portable is from S.A. Too bad he's terrible.

They should stick with rugby.

Mr. Goodman, Friday, 1 February 2008 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

No Kaiser Chiefs, no credibility.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 1 February 2008 15:30 (eighteen years ago)

Manfred Mann?
Trevor Rabin?

Geir Hongro, Friday, 1 February 2008 22:29 (eighteen years ago)

Assagai, for Telephone Girl alone.

Lolpez, Friday, 1 February 2008 22:31 (eighteen years ago)

oh, there's a guy from cape town, the bulgarian, who seems to be making blog waves too - more wonkiness, think sinden and switch (though the blogs might be over that stuff now)

jermainetwo, Saturday, 2 February 2008 04:09 (eighteen years ago)

Brenda Fassie?
Hugh Masekela?
Jonathan Butler?
Letta Mbulu?
Miriam Makeba?

mike t-diva, Sunday, 3 February 2008 01:53 (eighteen years ago)

Just noticed the GLARING ommission of Freshly ground... The most ubiquitous SA band at the moment... Also simphiwe dana, an awesome african jazz singer
