I saw this on Passengers on Ch4 the other day. Anybody know any bands that cause a fervent interest in just one place , so far from their home.? Thinking there are probably loads of examples in Japan.

Sorry I'm English

Actually, the term Californian Latinos prefer is Chicano.

Actually, many of the Mexicans prefer "Mexican".

Smokie became massive in Germany, years after Oh Carol & Pet Clarke was embraced by the French.

Sure, everywhere else, but Californian Mexicans who are fans of Labor Leader César Chavez perfer "Chicano"; I should know, I grew up with alot of Migrant Workers in my town, and they preferred Chicano. (Granted this was in the mid-80s, and I haven't been back since 1990, so I have no idea if that term has died out...or grown in popularity.)

I heard that David Hasselhoff was big in Germany.

Dave225, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And Tom Waits is big in Japan.

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I heard that David Hasselhoff is big all over. Boom! Boom!

Everybodies big in Japan. But then again everyTHING is big in Japan. They've had all sorts of fads over there that are even wierder than anything I've ever seen in my hometown.
My personal fave was the love of Australian Running Lizards. The Japaneese would take the back of their shirts and stretch them onto the tops of their heads and do a bowlegged running manuever. Became a dance craze, I heard.

didn't a lot of realtively obscure 80s british new wave get kind of big in the Philippines?

I recently returned from three years living in Japan, and was a keen observer (and some time DJ) in Tokyo's indie clubs. The bands who I can say fitted the bill asked by this question, ie popularity among the locals in relation to how they are seen at home, were most probably Spearmint (who are huge in Tokyo) and possibly Trash Can Sinatras. Some real no-mark Brit-indies who had genuinely fervent support: Mover, Jaguar, the Supernaturals .. all that awful post- Supergrass singalong pop that sounded more like the Barracudas.

Any 80s jangly pop fan who needs some cash ought to head to Shinjuku with their vinyl in a suitcase - singles by the likes of Boyracer and Brighter, let alone early Scream and Postcard, go for over £25.

Hell, I miss it sometimes...

funny place, thailand- what can you say about a nation that puts Shed 7's 'Ocean Pie' at #1?

after his UK hits dried up, Jona Lewie had number 1's in South Africa, for some reason.

Versus went platinum in Venezuela. (No, that's not a joke.)

Phil, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Versus, the NYC band? or the Pearl Jam record? And what's considered platinum in Venezuela?

Brian MacDonald, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Versus, the NYC band.

As for what's platinum in Venezuela, I don't know, and am finding it surprisingly hard to track down any pages that'll tell me. Isn't there some "gold/platinum record by country" chart out there?

Phil, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Van Der Graaf Generator's Pawn Hearts topped the Italian charts, and barely scraped the UK listings. Cheap Trick were big in Japan, and their being big in Japan led to them recording a live album there which made them big in America too.

Damian, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nigel: Yeah, I bumped into Ian, and....
David: Ian?...Ian?...oh, the other dead man, yeah.
Nigel: Said that "Sex Farm" is on charts in Japan...
Derek: Spinal Tap's recording of "Sex Farm".
