Does Lewis write her own shit? Neko sort of does.

No song Case has ever written herself has been as good as any song Newman has ever written for her. Lewis's solo album, which I believe was almost written entirely by her, was really strong (but I still don't care much for Rilo Kiley).

Neko of course.

I would still enjoy the Porno's without her.
But MUCH less.

neko cases' albums are all uniformally better than the terrible jenny lewis album

People are dissing Neko Case's songwriting here but I really rate the songs on Fox Confessor, much more so than those on Rabbit Fur Coat.

Dead Raven Choir cover a Neko Case song ("Favorite") on Surely My Firstborn Will Be Blind, though you'd never know to hear it. So, I went and listened to three versions of the original. All seemed boring, though I didn't really pay much attention.

Based on that, I'll say Jenny Lewis, whom I've never heard.

This is a joke, Neko Case is the greatest.

i like a lot of the songs on fox confessor a lot more than a lot of new pornographers songs. but i dunno much about her other stuff.

also, like does it really matter whether or not she writes her own songs or just gives really good perfomances of other ppl's songs? (this seems especially weird considering they are supposed to be in the country tradition when using outside songwriters is the norm)

Well if we're just going on vocal performances alone, yeah...Neko has a voice that a million singers would sell their souls for.

They're both great, and their solo records were two of my favorites from last year, you can read my 250,000 word posting about it on my blog.

But since we have to choose, I'll take Neko Case in a squeaker.

Jenny Lewis, not so much.

I love Neko Case on her George Harrison-esque spots on those Porno albums and was indifferent to Lewis for too long, but Rabbit Fur Coat and the last Rilo Kiley album (the only one I care for) are damn fine.

Yup. Case is awesome. I hope she sticks around in the New Pornos, but her solo albums are excellent too.

The only Rilo Kiley album I've listened to all the way through was that one with the one good song that was the single and the other one that was kinda of nice in a country way and then all filler.
