"eldery woman behind the counter in a small town"

i hate pearl jam but i heard this once on the radio on a cross country drive and i thought "hey, this isn't a horrible song!"

Corduroy. Best riff, best vocal and best melody.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 4 February 2008 18:12 (eighteen years ago)

everything on vs.

max, Monday, 4 February 2008 18:14 (eighteen years ago)

I kind of have a fondness for "Alive"

C. Grisso/McCain, Monday, 4 February 2008 18:14 (eighteen years ago)

Even Flow has a nice chorus. Elderly Woman seconded. I used to like Tremor Christ a lot, but haven't heard it for maybe ten years.

chap, Monday, 4 February 2008 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

I like "Not For You". Even bought a 45 of it. Pretty much that is the extent of my Pearl Jam fandom.

xhuxk, Monday, 4 February 2008 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

Bugs.

ian, Monday, 4 February 2008 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

and the other weird songs on "Vitalogy."

That was my favorite CD when I was 12.

ian, Monday, 4 February 2008 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

I never liked Pearl Jam, but two songs I do think are good
(from what I've heard) are "Oceans" and "Black".

Joe, Monday, 4 February 2008 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

They've gotten better with each album, to such an extent that their last one made my top 3 of the year – and, indeed, I still can't stand most of Ten.

"Given to Fly"
"Hail, Hail"
"Wishlist"
"Long Road" (I'm cheating)
"Faithful"
"Better Man"
"Once"
"Come Back"

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 4 February 2008 18:18 (eighteen years ago)

Would never call myself a fan, but liked "Do The Evolution," and I still dig the histrionic denouement of "Jeremy."

Alex in NYC, Monday, 4 February 2008 18:21 (eighteen years ago)

I still can't stand most of Ten.

Ten has great songs, but I can't stand the production. Way too much reverb. Yield and Vitalogy are my two favorites. This band is so fashionable to hate, I don't quite understand why.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 4 February 2008 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

Ten's OK. The worst thing about that era of Pearl Jam is the hats.

chap, Monday, 4 February 2008 18:25 (eighteen years ago)

PEARL JAM POXX:

Porch
Yellow Ledbetter
Breath
Go
Dissident
Last Exit
Corduroy
Long Road
In My Tree
Red Mosquito
Mankind
Black, Red, Yellow
Given To Fly
MFC
In Hiding
Insignificance
Grievance
Can't Keep
Get Right
World Wide Suicide

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 4 February 2008 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

What's the last track on Vs, the organy one? That's quite nice.

chap, Monday, 4 February 2008 18:28 (eighteen years ago)

The albums upto and including No Code are great.

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 4 February 2008 18:29 (eighteen years ago)

i like the one they always play at teh bars that goes "do do do do doodoo doooo" at the end witht he falsetto voices.

chaki, Monday, 4 February 2008 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

"Black"

Curt1s Stephens, Monday, 4 February 2008 19:20 (eighteen years ago)

two years pass...

Although I very rarely listen to it I still think Evenflow is one of the best rock songs of the 90s.

Yellow Ledbetter sounds very emotional even tho I still have no idea what he's singing about.

Moka, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 09:30 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think I've ever tried to make a "pick only"...

Oceans
I Got ID
Rearviewmirror
Daughter
WMA
Betterman
Sometimes
Lukin
Around The Bend
No Way
Push Me Pull Me
All Those Yesterdays

I realise these aren't probably the most representative PJ tracks. Always liked Pearl Jam best when they weren't being Pearl Jam.

village idiot (dog latin), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 10:54 (fifteen years ago)

Having made the list, and acquired some distance since my teenage fandom, "Yield" appears to be by far their best in terms of decent tracks.

village idiot (dog latin), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 10:55 (fifteen years ago)

yeah Yield's pretty great. may not be able to resist the urge to do a sequel to my POXX upthread.

kind of trill and very self-righteous (some dude), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 12:06 (fifteen years ago)

Yield has some awful filler (the one about Pilate, "Do the Evolution," a couple of others near the end) and Brendan O'Brien's production, but I still like it.

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 12:10 (fifteen years ago)

listening to yield again now - have to personallly disagree re: fillers, its a very solid listen. i really wasn't all that crazy about it at the time, but it's aged very well. and 'given to fly' was perhaps the best track they played at hyde park last weekend...

i really like the ten remaster too...

He moved to New York in March so he could train with local hot dogs. (stevie), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 12:16 (fifteen years ago)

it (yield) doesn't hold together quite as well as no code (either that or vitalogy is the best pearl jam album in my estimation), but its highs are enormous in the pj discography: "low light," "mfc," "brain of j," etc. "pilate" has gorgeous verses but wtf @ that fucking chorus.

haven't listened to pj much since high school because why, but i still enjoy them when they reappear on my radar.

Brad Nelson (BradNelson), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 12:22 (fifteen years ago)

And, you know, "Wishlist" is pretty gorgeous. So is "In Hiding."

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 12:23 (fifteen years ago)

Never bothered with them post-Vitalogy, but I hear good things. Where to start? I tend to prefer their rockier, less noodly songs.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 12:25 (fifteen years ago)

Pearl Jam and Backspacer are excellent. You should have no trouble finding Yield for cheap.

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 12:30 (fifteen years ago)

meanwhile, i remember this being a big deal in the height of my pearl jam fandom: what should have been the best song on binaural is not on binaural ("sad").

Was at a bar this weekend where three cute louts sang "Elderly Woman Behind the Counter..." I can't escape Pearl Jam.

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 13:52 (fifteen years ago)

sounds like a Whiney-style cultural study in the making

kind of trill and very self-righteous (some dude), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 14:01 (fifteen years ago)

They've been unhip for about 15 years now, but I still like 'em.

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 14:12 (fifteen years ago)

Were they ever hip? At the peak of my lol indie listening (and PJ's popularity) I and lots of my friends regarded them as a noble but slightly tacky enterprise.

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 14:13 (fifteen years ago)

Hip may be the wrong word. Appreciated is more accurate.

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 14:26 (fifteen years ago)

elderly woman, immortality, corduroy, i got id, mfc, in hiding, state of love and trust, yellow ledbetter, daughter, nothing as it seems
