This album is all about the singles to me. Voted "Little Red Corvette".

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 12:53 (seventeen years ago)

I'm really tempted to vote for one of the freakier tunes near the end, but then again "Let's Pretend We're Married" is probably my favourite early Prince tune alongside "Controversy". The only tunes I wouldn't at least consider to vote are "Delirious" and "International Lover". The former is good song actually, but I find the synth sound on it quite irritating. The latter is really the only mediocre tune here - it's just autotune Prince without any interesting ideas. Without it 1999 would be a flawless album, I think.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 13:39 (seventeen years ago)

I always try to avoid voting for singles in these polls, so "Something in the Water (Does Not Compute)."

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 13:54 (seventeen years ago)

Had to go with "Water" as well...genius

sonnyboy, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 13:57 (seventeen years ago)

dance music sex romance

tipsy mothra, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 14:16 (seventeen years ago)

yeah 'something in the water...' by a country mile. i don't think he ever did the 0-60 in 2 seconds *scream* better on any other track.

pisces, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 14:26 (seventeen years ago)

"Free" is one of his more underrated power ballads.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

D.M.S.R. is my favorite.

Jordan, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 16:00 (seventeen years ago)

"Something In The Water" is my fave non-single here, but "Little Red Corvette" is one of my all-time favourite Prince tracks, so it was impossible to ignore.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 22:42 (seventeen years ago)

I'm going to have to go back to this one. I just bought this recently and keep meaning to hear the whole thing but for some reason I end up quitting in the middle every time. I remember "Free" being notable, though.

Bimble, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 23:14 (seventeen years ago)

shit this is really hard. but probably the title track. its the title track for a reason.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 23:17 (seventeen years ago)

1999's apocalyptic new-wave revision of Sly & the Family Stone is pretty genius

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 23:18 (seventeen years ago)

DMSR

chaki, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 23:31 (seventeen years ago)

Title track.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 23:40 (seventeen years ago)

Shakey OTM. The title track has weathered potentially terminal overplaying and nearly a decade of being past its explicit expiration date with aplomb!

Davey D, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 23:42 (seventeen years ago)

All the hippies sing together "Ooh wee sha sha coo coo yeah"

The sky was all purple/there were people running everywhere...

Bimble, Saturday, 9 February 2008 07:07 (seventeen years ago)

It's the outdated drum machine sounds I love him for most in this period.

Bimble, Saturday, 9 February 2008 07:07 (seventeen years ago)

You know what I mean that guy with the scrubs...

Bimble, Saturday, 9 February 2008 07:08 (seventeen years ago)

the whole thing

latebloomer, Saturday, 9 February 2008 07:19 (seventeen years ago)

Okay I figured out my problem with this album now. I start to get REALLY bored when Automatic comes on. I mean that is a snoozeville. If I can just get past that song, things get really fascinating from there on.

Bimble, Saturday, 9 February 2008 07:21 (seventeen years ago)

Wait - Alfred was right upthread. Free is it. Oh yeah.

Bimble, Saturday, 9 February 2008 07:26 (seventeen years ago)

At least until Lady Cab Driver funks us up right.

little red corvette

stephen, Saturday, 9 February 2008 07:41 (seventeen years ago)

Love the whole album. If I had to put them in order:

Let's Pretend We're Married
1999
D.M.S.R.
Little Red Corvette
Delirious
Lady Cab Driver
Automatic
Free
All the Critics Love U in New York
International Lover
Something in the Water (Does Not Compute)

nicky lo-fi, Saturday, 9 February 2008 08:47 (seventeen years ago)

All right well I gotta tell you though, All The Critics In NY really did me right, too.

I'm sorry I was so quick to pick the title track on this one.

Bimble, Saturday, 9 February 2008 09:24 (seventeen years ago)

Of course I failed to call it by the correct name, but you know the song I mean.

Bimble, Saturday, 9 February 2008 09:25 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Friday, 15 February 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

!! "Automatic" is AMAZING.

babyalive, Friday, 15 February 2008 03:27 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Saturday, 16 February 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

Results as they should be (although I voted for "Let's Pretend We're Married")

kingkongvsgodzilla, Saturday, 16 February 2008 00:15 (seventeen years ago)

Delirious 0

really? ^

stephen, Saturday, 16 February 2008 00:16 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, that's batshit.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 16 February 2008 00:18 (seventeen years ago)

six years pass...

I can't stop thinking about the sudden switch from drum machines to loud n' funky realdrums for "Lady Cab Driver"; they take over the whole damn track, it's so cool

Abstinence Hawk (frogbs), Wednesday, 5 November 2014 17:33 (ten years ago)

the curse of this album is that even though it's one of the weaker tracks, "delirious" is capable of getting stuck in your head for weeks on ends, ruining one or more social relationships in the process

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 5 November 2014 17:35 (ten years ago)

for me it's "DANCE! MUSIC! SEX! ROMANCE!" *weep wop woo do doo*

Abstinence Hawk (frogbs), Wednesday, 5 November 2014 17:36 (ten years ago)

I hope I voted in this. Specifically I hope I voted for "Something in the Water (Does Not Compute)."

Eric H., Wednesday, 5 November 2014 17:37 (ten years ago)

yeah the drums on "Lady Cab Driver" might be my favorite Prince moment on them.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 5 November 2014 17:37 (ten years ago)

Of the singles, tho:

1999 = Married > Corvette > Automatic > Delirious

Eric H., Wednesday, 5 November 2014 17:39 (ten years ago)

"Delirious" is my least favorite of this period's singles but, still, it needed a vote.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 5 November 2014 17:40 (ten years ago)

I think I like "Let's Work" marginally less, but yeah.

Eric H., Wednesday, 5 November 2014 17:42 (ten years ago)

also I swear there's an elepent like 6:40 into LCD

Abstinence Hawk (frogbs), Wednesday, 5 November 2014 17:42 (ten years ago)

let's pretend we're hippies.

how's life, Wednesday, 5 November 2014 17:45 (ten years ago)

one year passes...

It's 'Lady Cab Driver', for the utterly batshit rant about Disneyland tourists in the middle.

But... could you imagine a formation in your lemonade? Ho! (Turrican), Saturday, 7 May 2016 22:22 (nine years ago)

Runner up: 'Automatic' ... I love the long jams on this record.

But... could you imagine a formation in your lemonade? Ho! (Turrican), Saturday, 7 May 2016 23:08 (nine years ago)

I don't wanna be a poet
'Cuz I don't wanna blow it
I don't care 2 win awards
All I wanna do is dance
Play music sex romance
And try my best 2 never get bored

dynamicinterface, Sunday, 8 May 2016 00:45 (nine years ago)

This is my favorite Prince record right now. Automatic, SITW, Delirious, DMSR--even Free sounds good!
I'd actually like to see a mini-poll of closer ballads, i.e. International Lover, Adore, Do Me, Baby

Iago Galdston, Sunday, 8 May 2016 01:06 (nine years ago)

Pretend that I gave poor "Delirious" a vote cause I would have if I'd seen this poll

Vinnie, Sunday, 8 May 2016 05:49 (nine years ago)

xpost:

It's probably my favourite Prince record right now, too. Up until now, I would have said Sign O' The Times was easily the superior double album, but after finding myself spinning this endlessly over the last couple of days, I'm not so sure.
