ok that's kind of awesome

kenan, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 17:47 (seventeen years ago)

This one's tough, but I voted "It's Iceland -- or the Philippines -- or Hastings -- or -- or this place!"

jaymc, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 17:48 (seventeen years ago)

i'm torn between "a show with everything but Yul Brynner" and "I get my kicks above the waistline, sunshine"

kenan, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 17:49 (seventeen years ago)

YOUR MASSAGE PARLAHS

impudent harlot, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 17:49 (seventeen years ago)

what a truly odd song.

kenan, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 17:50 (seventeen years ago)

had to go with "I get my kicks above the waistline, sunshine" because it's the one i remember most from actually listening to the tune and also i always buzz off people calling other people "sunshine".

or something, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 17:51 (seventeen years ago)

you forgot ONE NIGHT IN BANGKOK WITH A STARSHIP TROOPER

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 17:52 (seventeen years ago)

Totally forgot (and didn't notice) the "waistline, sunshine" line.

jaymc, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 17:53 (seventeen years ago)

"Cer-brull fitness" is a close second, but "waistline, sunshine" is my favorite.

Eazy, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 17:56 (seventeen years ago)

what a truly odd song.

It's from a musical! It's going to seem odd out of context.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 18:12 (seventeen years ago)

There are some wrong lyrics here, I believe.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 18:42 (seventeen years ago)

yes, CHESS: THE MUSICAL (an ABBA spinoff project)

this song is teh awes

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 18:43 (seventeen years ago)

There are some wrong lyrics here, I believe.

I always thought it was "chess bars" and not "chess boys" and "no ordinary menu" and not "ordinary venue", but this is what the Internet tells me.

Eazy, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 18:55 (seventeen years ago)

These lyrics look right to me.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 18:58 (seventeen years ago)

"I get my kicks above the waistline, sunshine" - when this song came out I used to go around saying it to people in a fake American accent.

snoball, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 19:05 (seventeen years ago)

...while not actually having much of a clue about what it meant.

snoball, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 19:06 (seventeen years ago)

the bass playing in this song is something else... does some flashy slap stuff and then doubles the arpeggiator at the end of the chorus. who was it on the recording?

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 19:25 (seventeen years ago)

but this is what the Internet tells me.

Trust not the internet.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 19:31 (seventeen years ago)

Where do you think the lyrics are wrong?

HI DERE, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 19:39 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Saturday, 9 February 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

"Tea, girls, warm and sweet" is the best line, whereas "sunshine" is all in the delivery

robertwolf8080, Saturday, 9 February 2008 00:18 (seventeen years ago)

What a great, ridiculous song

Oh, and "above the waitstline, sunshine" in a walk

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Saturday, 9 February 2008 00:25 (seventeen years ago)

I voted "waistline, sunshine," too, but honorable mention to "and if you're lucky then the god's a she."

Joseph McCombs, Saturday, 9 February 2008 07:19 (seventeen years ago)

Had to go with "I get my kicks..."...Murray Head is awesome on this...It's funk for Abba fans and middle England Lloyd Webber?Thatcher Droogs...

sonnyboy, Saturday, 9 February 2008 10:15 (seventeen years ago)

The delivery is great, but he gets the second line all wrong - surely 'Brynner' was meant to rhyme with 'in a'? (See also 'Buddha' and 'would a')

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 9 February 2008 10:27 (seventeen years ago)

That Yul Brynner line.

These were of course some of the most ridiculous lyrics ever.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 9 February 2008 11:51 (seventeen years ago)

"One town's very like another when your head's down over your pieces, brother" is one of those great lines that makes no sense without the chess context.

Eazy, Saturday, 9 February 2008 16:11 (seventeen years ago)

Surprising how many good choices there are here but went with "the queens we use would not excite you."

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 9 February 2008 20:35 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Sunday, 10 February 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

now time for the "Nobody's Side" poll.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 10 February 2008 17:34 (seventeen years ago)

Or the Paul Hardcastle "19" poll.

Eazy, Sunday, 10 February 2008 23:45 (seventeen years ago)

But the clear winner there would be "Nininini Nineteen, 19, Ni-nineteen 19, 19,19,19,19."

Eazy, Sunday, 10 February 2008 23:47 (seventeen years ago)

I went for "muddy old river or reclining Buddha".

An extraordinary song, like no other hit single ever. It exists outside of everything. That's all for the best, of course, but I wouldn't have been without it.

February Callendar, Monday, 11 February 2008 00:13 (seventeen years ago)

What I mean is: it's possibly the whitest record ever made. Nothing else is so stiff and makes a point of it in quite the same way. As sonnyboy hints, that's precisely why it's good, or at least interesting.

February Callendar, Monday, 11 February 2008 00:40 (seventeen years ago)

I'm trying to think of any other examples (in song or film) of a European doing a broad caricature of an American.

Eazy, Monday, 11 February 2008 01:16 (seventeen years ago)

hell there are some other moments of that throughout the Chess score (but not so much as that song)....

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Monday, 11 February 2008 01:37 (seventeen years ago)

That's the thing. It's Old Tory in its attitudes. And virtually no other chart hits are like that: indeed without pop (which "One Night in Bangkok" certainly isn't) Old Toryism might even still be dominant now: at any rate, it would have died much, much slower.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 01:05 (seventeen years ago)

Yeahhhh, but he's supposed to be a bit of a git in the song, right?

Mark G, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 08:44 (seventeen years ago)

As always, my vote goes to "Say It Ain't So Joe."

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 08:45 (seventeen years ago)

six months pass...
