POLL: Best Track on Yes' Big Generator (1987)

"We are the voice of every star...we are the voice of every [vocoder] big generator[/vocoder]" - Jon Anderson in concert (1987)

The band's over-produced, long-gestation-period follow-up to their ultra-successful comeback, 90125. There's the still successful hit singles "Love Will Find a Way" and "Rhythm of Love", the bastard child of "Owner of a Lonely Heart" (title track), stabs at prog ("I'm Running") and stabs at...well, other stuff ("Almost Like Love" with 'soul' horn section?).

My vote goes to "I'm Running" (Yes does "Tequila"?), primarily because the build-up to the gloriously over-the-top climax (bassist Chris Squire said they were going for a "West Side Story" thing)...anyway, that last section of the song is probably the best that "YesWest" ever achieved.

This is actually better than 90125 (cover art excepted)

zaxxon25, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 20:35 (seventeen years ago)

The cover art is atrocious...probably among the worst I've ever
seen involving computer graphics, etc.

Joe, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 20:40 (seventeen years ago)

I think 90125 is a way better album, though...

Joe, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 20:40 (seventeen years ago)

We're running out of poll ideas now, no? :)

Anyway, "Holy Lamb", which almost sounds like a proper Yes track.

And 9025>>>Big Generator.

I dunno, "Leave It" creates too huge a deficit to overcome in my book. If I forget it's a Yes album "Love Will Find A Way" is a catchy & fetching new wave attempt.

I eat at Chez Nous! :) Agreed though, that main riff for "Love Will Find a Way" is quite catchy.

XP
"Leave It" has some wonderful backing vocals and wonderful drum machines. It doesn't sound much like Yes, but it's great on its own premises.

wasn't trevor horn set to produce this as well? wha happened?? way to derail your comeback, dorks.

Trevor Horn did produce "Big Generator".

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 7 February 2008 09:10 (seventeen years ago)

hmmmmm, one review i read said this -
"First, let's consider the matter of the album's gestation. Big Generator was commenced in 1985, on the heels of Yes's profit-making tour for 90125. Initially, the band intended to keep Trevor Horn as their producer. Eventually, after abortive attempts at creating the album in London and Italy, the project moved to California, with Trevor Rabin taking Horn's role (and with Paul DeVilliers providing a bit of help). This would have disastrous effects on the band in the long-term, of course, as Rabin would eventually come to dominate the entire recording process; even in a more immediate sense, it suggests that the other band members were all-too-willing to allow Rabin a dominant role, and were losing their control over the direction of the band as such. The result is that much of the album is overproduced in a manner typical of Rabin's practice, and that the more clever Horn-isms which marked 90125 are generally gone. "

According to Wikipedia, both Trevor's are credited with the production.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 7 February 2008 10:02 (seventeen years ago)

(The Wikipedia article also claims the album will be re-released by Rhino in 2008, but with no other reasoning than the fact that all the previous albums have already been.)

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 7 February 2008 10:03 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, Rabin and Horn had some kind of falling out over the production of this album (I remember an MTV interview in the 80s with Rabin and Anderson where this is indicated).

Joe, Thursday, 7 February 2008 12:50 (seventeen years ago)

That is, Horn was on board at the beginning, then left the project. Also, there was a major shift in production locale to make-over the album, resulting in the additional years and cost spent.

Joe, Thursday, 7 February 2008 12:51 (seventeen years ago)

Sadly, Rabin would remain in Yes for several more years until they finally got rid of him in the mid-90s and could start to turn Yes into Yes again.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Sadly, they haven't succeeded in their quest yet. :)

Not that it was anywhere near what they did in the 70s, but "The Ladder" represented quite a number of steps in the right direction.

FIVE VOTES

Johnny Fever, Monday, 11 February 2008 01:03 (seventeen years ago)

Overwhelming consensus!

zaxxon25, Monday, 11 February 2008 14:40 (seventeen years ago)

wot no love for 'shoot high aim low'?

or something, Monday, 11 February 2008 14:52 (seventeen years ago)

I knew it wouldn't be a big poll, but I thought it would get more than 5 votes. I guess few people out there actually remember this one (or feel compelled to respond to it)...

I stand by my original vote: "I'm Running" dammit! :)
