I was suprised to find that there weren't many topics on what was easily the best girl group of the 60s (and in those topics, many people complaining about what a terrible voice Diana Ross has!). There's a number of songs here that I could go for on any day, but I'll vote for "Where Did Our Love Go" for being their first hit and the great horn solo.

come see about me

followed by stoned love

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 7 February 2008 20:56 (seventeen years ago)

Motherfucker...I can't choose between "Stop!," "You Keep Me Hangin' On," "Reflections," "Love is Here," "Love Child"...greatest 60s singles band?

Sara Sara Sara, Thursday, 7 February 2008 21:03 (seventeen years ago)

You Keep Me Hanging On

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 7 February 2008 21:08 (seventeen years ago)

My vote's for "My World Is Empty Without You." That intro is musical perfection.

matt2, Thursday, 7 February 2008 21:45 (seventeen years ago)

Love is Like An Itching In My Heart
Come See About Me
Nathan Jones
The Happening
Someday We’ll Be Together

Honorable mentions:

In and Out of Love
I Hear A Symphony
You Keep Me Hangin' On
Where Did Our Love Go?
Bad Weather

I think I'll vote for Love is Like An Itching In My Heart, not because it's my favorite (how can I choose?) but because it really deserves at least one vote because it is amazing. Listen to it if you never have!

musically, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:20 (seventeen years ago)

stoned love

Rev. Hoodoo, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:38 (seventeen years ago)

Hunt3r, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:48 (seventeen years ago)

You keep Me Hanging On, just over Baby Love.

I've actually never heard most of these.

chap, Thursday, 7 February 2008 23:49 (seventeen years ago)

So tempting to go for "Stop" but "Up The Ladder To The Roof" is so unsung and so gorgeous.

edwardo, Thursday, 7 February 2008 23:51 (seventeen years ago)

n what was easily the best girl group of the 60s

no. probably a separate poll unto itself

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 7 February 2008 23:52 (seventeen years ago)

"Reflections" I think maybe because of its use on China Beach.

Spencer Chow, Thursday, 7 February 2008 23:57 (seventeen years ago)

GUYS IT'S WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO GEEEZ

"You Keep Me Hanging On"

Lostandfound, Friday, 8 February 2008 02:53 (seventeen years ago)

My vote's for "My World Is Empty Without You." That intro is musical perfection.

I started humming it to myself when I realized I was actually humming the intro to The Coral's "Dreaming of You". I always thought "Dreaming of You" sounded familiar...they have the same bass/brass, and the vocals are swapped; the verse of Dreaming of You sounds like the chorus of My World Is..., while the chorus of Dreaming of You sounds like the verses of My World Is....

musically, Friday, 8 February 2008 03:27 (seventeen years ago)

Holland/Dozier/Holland sure loved that baritone-sax-and-vibes combination, didn't they?

I love about a half-dozen or so of these more than the rest but like nearly all of 'em. I'm tempted to vote for "A Breathtaking Guy" just because the B-side has such an intriguingly weird title (and also because the A-side's not all-Diana.) But "Reflections", bandwagon "psychedelic" effects and all, needs to get at least one vote. So there it is.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Friday, 8 February 2008 05:29 (seventeen years ago)

Had to go for the astonishing production of "You Keep Me Hanging On," though my heart was otherwise with "I Hear a Symphony" and "Forever Came Today."

Joseph McCombs, Friday, 8 February 2008 05:57 (seventeen years ago)

I'm tempted to vote for "A Breathtaking Guy" just because the B-side has such an intriguingly weird title (and also because the A-side's not all-Diana.)

But it doesn't outdo the full title of the A-side, "A Breath Taking, First Sight Soul Shaking, One Night Love Making, Next Day Heartbreaking Guy".

musically, Friday, 8 February 2008 18:42 (seventeen years ago)

"You keep Me Hanging On"...and there ain't nothin' you can do about it.

The guy who just votes in polls, Friday, 8 February 2008 18:47 (seventeen years ago)

ditto

Eric H., Friday, 8 February 2008 18:49 (seventeen years ago)

no. probably a separate poll unto itself

It was definitely hyperbole, but besides The Shangri-Las, Crystals, Ronettes, Vandellas, and a few others, most of the girl groups seemed to have one or two hits and then faded away. Also, I think the Supremes were the only one of the early girl groups to continue to have hits into the late 60s, as even the Shangri-Las got bogged down in shitty legal issues that killed their momentum.

Belldog, Friday, 8 February 2008 19:00 (seventeen years ago)

He's My Man!

bakerstreetsaxsolo, Friday, 8 February 2008 23:57 (seventeen years ago)

Impossible to choose one, of course, but I voted "Up The Ladder To The Roof" because I doubt anyone else will, and because they could in many ways transcend further without the Original Beyonce.

February Callendar, Saturday, 9 February 2008 04:37 (seventeen years ago)

Reflections....though you really can't go wrong with most of these. Supremes=krieg.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 10 February 2008 17:31 (seventeen years ago)

"I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" which may be a slight cheat but who cares?

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 10 February 2008 17:36 (seventeen years ago)

i have to agree on "my world is empty...", just that deep, low, surge in the intro...its just too damned good...

i can't hear "i hear a symphony" without imagining the old tv clip and flop out my hands on "sym" and "phony"

bb, Sunday, 10 February 2008 18:23 (seventeen years ago)

Let's do the Marvelettes next. (They're actually my favorite. I think I may prefer the Shirelles to the Supremes, as well, but I admit it's a tough call.)

The guy who just votes in polls, Monday, 11 February 2008 15:57 (seventeen years ago)

"You Can't Hurry Love".

Geir Hongro, Monday, 11 February 2008 19:49 (seventeen years ago)

greatest 60s singles band?

No. But they were amongst them, in spite of the competition being really tough.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 11 February 2008 19:50 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Thursday, 21 February 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

1968 "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" /"A Place In The Sun" 1
1969 "Someday We'll Be Together" /"He's My Sunny Boy" 1

1965 "Back in My Arms Again" /"Whisper You Love Me Boy" 0
1967 "Love Is Here and Now You're Gone" /"Theres No Stopping Us Now" 0

I think only the Supremes could get results like this. Of these seven songs, there were four number one hits, one number two, and the others got up to nine and eleven.

seven years pass...

I recently re-purchased that double greatest hits album from 1967 and it sounds like it was recorded at necrohell studios. I swear this didn’t sound so crappy when I had it 20+ years ago. Anybody found a decent copy?

Sorry for vinyl talk, I will probably just buy that mid 90s anthology thing.

brimstead, Friday, 12 May 2023 17:36 (two years ago)

Yeah, get the mid 90s anthology thing.

There are several issues at play:

1) you need to get the mono mixes - the stereo mixes are thin and weak and if that's what they're using, it's never going to sound great

2) the mid 90s thing used the original first-generation master tapes, and IIRC, those hadn't been used for the mono mixes (i.e. THE hit mixes that most people bought on 45 and heard on the radio) in decades

Nothing against vinyl, but it takes a back seat to whatever sources or master tapes they used - that's a 1,000,000 times more important than whether they're mastering it for digital or vinyl

awesome, thank you!

Truly cannot believe that “Love is Like an Itching in My Heart” got a single vote. Easily one of the best singles of the 1960’s

“buttered popcorn” is a weird song
