The Brainwasher, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:11 (seventeen years ago)

bug, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:11 (seventeen years ago)

John Mayer?

henry s, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:12 (seventeen years ago)

Jon Bon fuckin' Jovi. Always up for and winning awards he doesn't deserve, shitty blockbuster after shitty blockbuster.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:15 (seventeen years ago)

Eagles

musically, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:23 (seventeen years ago)

Anthony Kiedis

da croupier, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:33 (seventeen years ago)

Captain goofball of the 80s, turned blockbuster in the early 90s with sap, now somehow becoming a grey eminence and Grammy/Oscar perennial.

da croupier, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:34 (seventeen years ago)

Ben Folds

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:34 (seventeen years ago)

Billy Joel

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:34 (seventeen years ago)

da croup correct i think

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:35 (seventeen years ago)

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? Comfortable, not dangerous, soft?

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:35 (seventeen years ago)

Metallica

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:36 (seventeen years ago)

Metallica is the Nic Cage of rock

da croupier, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:37 (seventeen years ago)

Dave Grohl

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:37 (seventeen years ago)

I think Kiedis was a good call

latebloomer, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:38 (seventeen years ago)

as comfortable stalwarts go, one could do alot worse (and scarcely better tbh) than TH. never got the hatred.

tremendoid, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:38 (seventeen years ago)

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? Comfortable, not dangerous, soft?

not sure, to be honest. the question just popped into my head earlier today. wasn't sure what it meant, so i figured i'd ask. da croupier makes a compelling point for keidis, i think...

bug, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:39 (seventeen years ago)

i'm thinking maroon 5

tremendoid, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:40 (seventeen years ago)

otm. i don't generally like the movies he's in but he doesn't bother me

latebloomer, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:41 (seventeen years ago)

metallica is the worst answer by far

john mayer is a good call, but let's see if he's around

billy joel is good but too showy/weird when you really think about it

keidis is the best answer

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:43 (seventeen years ago)

except that Kiedis is a joke and nobody takes him seriously or buys his records

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:45 (seventeen years ago)

or hands him awards on an annual basis

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:46 (seventeen years ago)

shakey, go sit in the corner

latebloomer, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:48 (seventeen years ago)

I guess it would be an act that started off faux-edgy but quickly became a MOR, pudgy shill.

So . . . The Clipse?

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:49 (seventeen years ago)

googling for "nicest guy in rock" returns brad delp of boston and dave grohl.

Jordan, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:49 (seventeen years ago)

(j/k, j/k). Simmer down.

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:50 (seventeen years ago)

waht

okay I stand corrected

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:50 (seventeen years ago)

keidis is just a bit too lunkheaded to fit. hanks has stores of self-awareness he's just too modest/content to employ in his films at this point, and I think it's a great decision, whatever else i might think about the his performances.

tremendoid, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:50 (seventeen years ago)

I guess my next question is who are these fuckin idiots that are still paying attention to Anthony Kiedis lolz

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:50 (seventeen years ago)

lol at latebloomer

J0rdan S., Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:52 (seventeen years ago)

by 'great' i mean I'm glad the essence he tries to chase(usually) is that of the 'everyman', if for no other reason than the fact he's the only one doing it. even russell crowe is straining for something to his 'everymen' and his utter failure to capture it should be cautionary.

tremendoid, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:54 (seventeen years ago)

straining to add some postmodern something to his 'everyman' that should read i think.

tremendoid, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:56 (seventeen years ago)

beck

^@^, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:56 (seventeen years ago)

It's weird: before Gump, Tom Hanks was totally loveable. Like he was a genuinely funny dude who appeared in darkly comic movies like Joe Vs. the Volcano and The Burbs. He hosted SNL a few times and always came off pretty well, never seemed too full of himself or anything. Even Philadelphia was like "awesome, can you believe Tom Hanks is totally going to win an Oscar?" Then he had about a 6 year stretch where he got all serious and befriended Spielberg and people crowned him America's Everyman and he did all this Important Oscar Bait and appeared in Important HBO Mini-Series, so now everyone hates him. But it's not like he's even been nominated for anything since Cast Away.

jaymc, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:57 (seventeen years ago)

uh there was nothing awesome about Philadelphia

Mr. Que, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:59 (seventeen years ago)

Were the Nora Ephron romcoms before or after Gump?

James Redd and the Blecchs, Thursday, 7 February 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

before and after

tremendoid, Thursday, 7 February 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

You've Got Hate Mail

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 7 February 2008 23:02 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah:

Sleepless in Seattle (1993)
Gump (1994)
You've Got Mail (1998)

jaymc, Thursday, 7 February 2008 23:02 (seventeen years ago)

Who is the Leslie West of film?

Bill Magill, Thursday, 7 February 2008 23:03 (seventeen years ago)

Bon Jovi.

Bosom Buddies = Hair Metal

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 7 February 2008 23:04 (seventeen years ago)

uh there was nothing awesome about Philadelphia

I remember liking it, although if I saw it now, it'd probably be kind of cringey.

care to expand? i'm curious cos it was the very first name to pop in my mind also but i can't even remember why now. probably 'so 1994 lol' or something along those lines.

tremendoid, Thursday, 7 February 2008 23:07 (seventeen years ago)

i mean i've found it damn easy to ignore tom hanks if need be since the 90's, even easier than the chili peppers(U2 is my shakeyesque blind spot, ask me a few years ago and I would've sworn they disbanded after joshua tree or something, still kinda wtf) so forgive my charity.

tremendoid, Thursday, 7 February 2008 23:10 (seventeen years ago)

re: beck

both originally jokey, likeable, unassuming everyman types who successfully flipped those qualities + raw talent into 'serious artist'-dom, reputations which they continue to dine out on in spite of current choices (da vinci code/scientology) underling their obvious and utter indifference to and remoteness from those original traits

^@^, Thursday, 7 February 2008 23:15 (seventeen years ago)

ok that is the correct answer. maroon 5 still have fiyah in the belly.

tremendoid, Thursday, 7 February 2008 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

Surely the answer is Springsteen. Everyman who's early career was full of fun, excitement and possibility. Then got a bit moody, intropective and serious in his middle age but is now relaxing and having a bit of fun again in the latter stages of his career.

Billy Dods, Thursday, 7 February 2008 23:21 (seventeen years ago)

I think Dods might have it (although I still like the Kiedis theory).

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 7 February 2008 23:24 (seventeen years ago)

problem with the springsteen theory is that his resurgence is as much, if not more, owing to current public appetite and props from younger bands; whereas hanks' rep as a good guy-turned hollywood schlockster seems a little more unmovable

^@^, Thursday, 7 February 2008 23:32 (seventeen years ago)

ie. springsteen now is pretty much just as relatable to the springsteen of '85; hanks, not so much

^@^, Thursday, 7 February 2008 23:33 (seventeen years ago)

who the fuck is adrian zmed

da croupier, Friday, 8 February 2008 05:17 (seventeen years ago)

my first thought was john mayer too. but it guess it could be beck.

Roz, Friday, 8 February 2008 05:28 (seventeen years ago)

John Hiatt.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Friday, 8 February 2008 05:39 (seventeen years ago)

Adrian Zmed was in Grease 2!

Myonga Vön Bontee, Friday, 8 February 2008 05:42 (seventeen years ago)

Tom Petty - doesn't have the early wackiness so much, but their current music and movie careers fit pretty well (nice background, but do you want to go out of your way to see/hear either one?)

Kiedis is probably the right answer, but he's still a bit wacky with the shirtlessness and heroin relapses and stuff

milo z, Friday, 8 February 2008 05:48 (seventeen years ago)

The correct answer to the question of "the nicest guy in rock" is Ted Leo, but Petty or Kiedis are a better fit for the Hanks comparison.

Simon H., Friday, 8 February 2008 05:51 (seventeen years ago)

I was gonna say Grohl but now that someone said Springsteen I think that's the best. I think Kiedis was too batshit early in his career to really fit a Tom Hanks parallel.

adamj, Friday, 8 February 2008 06:06 (seventeen years ago)

as comfortable stalwarts go, one could do alot worse (and scarcely better tbh) than TH. never got the hatred.

i'm agreeing with this and on that note suggesting Radiohead

strgn, Friday, 8 February 2008 06:20 (seventeen years ago)

I almost wanna say Radiohead is the George Clooney of rock, proving he's not just another hunk with esoteric side projects and risk-taking, worshipped as a god, crazy high profile despite lack of actual blockbusters.

he's still a bit wacky with the shirtlessness and heroin relapses and stuff

well Hanks did make the Ladykillers

da croupier, Friday, 8 February 2008 06:43 (seventeen years ago)

how much you pay for michael clayton

strgn, Friday, 8 February 2008 07:03 (seventeen years ago)

Coldplay = Brad Pitt (free trade now!, dreamy, "oh but next time I'm working with..." and it still winds up mush)

Tom Petty = Nick Nolte (reliable trooper through early 90s, then suddenly got REALLY haggard and its grandpa time here on out)

Bruce Springsteen is some sick amalgam of Robert Redford (USA, every movie treated like a big deal only who the fuck actually cares) and Al Pacino (HOO-HA!)

da croupier, Friday, 8 February 2008 07:11 (seventeen years ago)

John Mellencamp = Kevin Costner

da croupier, Friday, 8 February 2008 07:18 (seventeen years ago)

actually Coldplay's not fair to Pitt. Coldplay is Orlando fucking Bloom.

da croupier, Friday, 8 February 2008 07:26 (seventeen years ago)

COLDPALY FOR PRESIDETN!

Mark G, Friday, 8 February 2008 10:12 (seventeen years ago)

Don Henley = Michael Douglas

(maybe?)

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 8 February 2008 17:10 (seventeen years ago)

Bono is the Tom Cruise of rock.

chap, Friday, 8 February 2008 17:20 (seventeen years ago)

Yes.

da croupier, Friday, 8 February 2008 17:31 (seventeen years ago)

Who's the Jack Nicholson of rock, Iggy Pop perhaps?

Billy Dods, Friday, 8 February 2008 18:26 (seventeen years ago)

nah, Rod Stewart

da croupier, Friday, 8 February 2008 18:40 (seventeen years ago)

Iggy's the Gary Busey of rock

da croupier, Friday, 8 February 2008 18:41 (seventeen years ago)

Jack Nicholson = Neil Young

kornrulez6969, Friday, 8 February 2008 18:43 (seventeen years ago)

Dustin Hoffman = Neil Young

da croupier, Friday, 8 February 2008 18:53 (seventeen years ago)

Neil's comfortably moving into Grandpa status, while Rod's still crooning to the ladies

da croupier, Friday, 8 February 2008 18:54 (seventeen years ago)

Dustin Hoffman = Leonard Cohen

talrose, Friday, 8 February 2008 18:57 (seventeen years ago)

Peter O'Toole = Leonard Cohen

da croupier, Friday, 8 February 2008 18:59 (seventeen years ago)

What album is Road To Perdition?

Display Name, Friday, 8 February 2008 18:59 (seventeen years ago)

Dustin Hoffman does not have a sexy muse.

x-post

da croupier, Friday, 8 February 2008 19:00 (seventeen years ago)

Peter O' Toole = Ray Davies

talrose, Friday, 8 February 2008 19:01 (seventeen years ago)

TS: Venus vs. Dear Heather

Ray Davies doesn't have ANYTHING to do with sex

da croupier, Friday, 8 February 2008 19:01 (seventeen years ago)

I'm thinking more album/film trajectory, but fair point, although Hoffman was supposedly quite the ladies man.

talrose, Friday, 8 February 2008 19:02 (seventeen years ago)

well most rock stars and musicians are.

can't think off the top of my head of a brit star crabby and nostalgia-obsessed enough to be Davies.

da croupier, Friday, 8 February 2008 19:04 (seventeen years ago)

movie stars and musicians, rather

da croupier, Friday, 8 February 2008 19:04 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, and Dennis Hopper = Iggy Pop

talrose, Friday, 8 February 2008 19:04 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, that works better than Busey, all had a comeback in the early 90s but Iggy isn't fuuuuuucked, just kind of an immortal weirdo/hack, also I think "Search And Destroy" was in a sneaker commercial, just like Hopper.

da croupier, Friday, 8 February 2008 19:06 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, Iggy/Hopper is too perfect. I bet the former's songs have turned up on soundtracks for at least 3 of the latter's movies, too.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 8 February 2008 19:10 (seventeen years ago)

also: Easy Rider--->The Last Movie--->Apocalypse Now = Stooges--->Fun House--->Raw Power

talrose, Friday, 8 February 2008 19:10 (seventeen years ago)

and

The Idiot--->Lust For Life = Rivers Edge--->Blue Velvet

talrose, Friday, 8 February 2008 19:11 (seventeen years ago)

Daniel Day Lewis=Scott Walker (?)

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 8 February 2008 19:23 (seventeen years ago)

Who is the Ernest Borgnine of rock?

Jake Brown, Friday, 8 February 2008 19:39 (seventeen years ago)

leslie west
