Make 'em laugh, as opposed to "Be a clown" right?

Mark G, Friday, 8 February 2008 15:33 (seventeen years ago)

Make 'Em Laugh is one of the greatest movie moments ever, so that.

John Justen, Friday, 8 February 2008 15:34 (seventeen years ago)

Got to go for "Singin' in the Rain" itself. The tune makes me so happy. I haven't watched the film for 15-20 years, Maybe I'll pick up a DVD tonight.

I wonder if anyone in this day & age gets the joke behind "Lina Lamont" anymore. A bit like Susan Kane in "Citizen Kane", the object of the spoof is forgotten.

Just watched (part of) it this morning to test out a new TV.

Ugh. This poll poses much more problems than the oeuvre or P&J polls. Do you vote for the song qua song or its appearance in the film? I'm going the latter route and choosing "Make 'Em Laugh" which is indeed an apotheosis in cinema. Firecracker though Donald O'Connor was, it's the way the editing oscillates between matches on action and longer takes that makes the scene quite literally magic, Citizen Kane pared down to its Eisenstein-meets-Renoir essence.

Fans of this number should check out its counterpart "I Wanna Wander" in I Love Melvin from the following year which actually puts O'Connor's virtuosity more on display.

Do Meet Me in St. Louis next. Much better songs over all in that one even though Singin' is the ever-so-slightly better film.

i love "good morning," for the dance routines and the three-way chemistry.

tipsy mothra, Friday, 8 February 2008 17:30 (seventeen years ago)

"three-way chemistry" sounds way dirtier than i meant it.

I love that scene and many other scenes and the songs that go with them- so I went for the Voting For The Song As A Song philosophy.

Have you guys heard the other "Good Morning" song that Comden and Green wrote for themselves? Maybe it's called "I Said Good Morning." The initially cheerful duo grows ever more exasperated after the umpteenth "Good Morning" sung to the umpteenth farm animal. Very funny.

Do Meet Me in St. Louis next.

Not "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"? That one kills me every time.

The guy who just votes in polls, Friday, 8 February 2008 18:36 (seventeen years ago)

I'm wouldn't vote for them separate from the context of the film, since they were all written for other films first, right?

Hence, "Make Em Laugh" is one of my least favorite songs, but pretty easily my favorite number.

Eric H., Friday, 8 February 2008 18:59 (seventeen years ago)

Meet Me in St. Louis would be a lot closer contest.

Looks like WFUV-FM is going to discuss the work of Arthur Freed tomorrow, Sunday, at 8PM EST on a show called The Big Broadcast.

Not quite right, looks like the spotlight is one over on Nacio Herb Brown. http://www.wfuv.org/music/listings/index.html
