tough one. i think i'm going to put down for Greetings, which has always felt like his most cohesive album to me. Starsailor has some wonderful individual songs, but for whatever reason it just doesn't gel for me like Greetings does.

bug, Saturday, 9 February 2008 07:46 (seventeen years ago)

after seeing his picture i voted for Look at the Fool

oh! wait

this is an albums poll, huh.

stephen, Saturday, 9 February 2008 07:51 (seventeen years ago)

Starsailor, all the way. I mean, shit, Penderecki with voices instead of strings? Who else coulda pulled that off?

Sara Sara Sara, Saturday, 9 February 2008 14:26 (seventeen years ago)

Happy Sad. Mine has tons of scratches from late night unsober rotation.

MaggieGo, Saturday, 9 February 2008 18:16 (seventeen years ago)

I voted Happy Sad. I've never heard those last two, how are they?

Billy Pilgrim, Saturday, 9 February 2008 20:35 (seventeen years ago)

it was a toss up between Lorca and Greetings from LA with starsailor coming in a close 3rd. i went with Greetings because Sweet Surrender is the greatest song ever made.

jaxon, Saturday, 9 February 2008 20:40 (seventeen years ago)

look at the fool's really not that bad. but it's really not that good. i've never heard sefronia

jaxon, Saturday, 9 February 2008 20:41 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, i've never heard the last two either. The few things I've heard from them sound really overproduced. his live album Honeyman is killer, though -- from the same period, but really stripped down and raw.

bug, Saturday, 9 February 2008 20:45 (seventeen years ago)

blue afternoon...

resolved, Sunday, 10 February 2008 10:15 (seventeen years ago)

happy sad

m coleman, Sunday, 10 February 2008 12:22 (seventeen years ago)

Blue Afternoon

Tom D., Sunday, 10 February 2008 13:07 (seventeen years ago)

By "Goodbye And Hello" he still wasn't more musically experimenting than it was still a nice listen at times, so that becomes my pick. "Starsailor" is too weird.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 10 February 2008 16:21 (seventeen years ago)

happy sad

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 10 February 2008 18:24 (seventeen years ago)

cool, i'm really curious to see the results...

bug, Sunday, 10 February 2008 22:51 (seventeen years ago)

Starsailor, followed closely by Goodbye and Hello. Lorca's title track is one the best things Buckley did, but I can never really remember the rest of that album.

inhibitionist, Sunday, 10 February 2008 23:35 (seventeen years ago)

there really wasn't much to it. anonymous proposition is good, but slooooooooow. his vocal on it is amazing, but i prefer it to the title track to. the rest of it's songs that'd later wind up on the 'live at the troubadour' album, so it's kind of a wash, if you've already heard that. some good songs, but not nearly as weird as the studio tracks.

bug, Monday, 11 February 2008 05:00 (seventeen years ago)

The two Buckley lps I listen to most are 'Dream Letter' and 'Live at the Troubador' - a lot of the studio albums sound stilted by comparison.

Stevie T, Monday, 11 February 2008 08:34 (seventeen years ago)

Kneejerk vote for Starsailor since it's one of my top five albums by anybody but it would have been nice to have seen the live albums included. Dream Letter really is extraordinary despite possibly the worst introduction speech on any album (a rather stoned Radio 1's Pete Drummond).

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 11 February 2008 11:11 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, i was thinking about including the live albums. oh well.

is there a live album or decent bootleg floating around of his starsailor stuff? i found some things on soulseek a while ago, and the sound quality wasn't so hot, but the performances were just insane. a good quality recording of that would be sick.

bug, Monday, 11 February 2008 17:47 (seventeen years ago)

Went with Greetings, but I've just ordered the s/t-Goodbye and Hello twofer.

C. Grisso/McCain, Monday, 11 February 2008 17:50 (seventeen years ago)

Starsailor, but I've been giving Goodbye and Hello more attention lately. And yeah, I would've considered voting for Dream Letter were it an option.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 11 February 2008 18:14 (seventeen years ago)

Head says Starsailor, heart says Happy Sad. So, Happy Sad.

Naive Teen Idol, Monday, 11 February 2008 19:39 (seventeen years ago)

Oh and despite its sound, Blue Afternoon comes between Lorca and Starsailor, not before.

Naive Teen Idol, Monday, 11 February 2008 19:41 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

Oh and despite its sound, Blue Afternoon comes between Lorca and Starsailor, not before.

This is wrong, isn't it?

Tom D., Tuesday, 12 February 2008 09:41 (seventeen years ago)

I believe "Blue Afternoon" was recorded earlier but released later. They were done for different labels.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 16:01 (seventeen years ago)

Blue Afternoon and Starsailor were both done for Herb Cohen's Straight label and I'm pretty sure that both came out in succession after Lorca (which was on Elektra). Wish Cohen and the Zappa estate would sort out their differences (bucket of water needed here, I fear) so that we could get both on CD.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 16:11 (seventeen years ago)

I've got "Blue Afternoon" on CD!

Tom D., Tuesday, 12 February 2008 16:14 (seventeen years ago)

Toughie but I went with Greetings as that's the one I listen to most these days. I refuse to vote Starsailor until I get to own the damn thing.

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 16:19 (seventeen years ago)

And I've got Starsailor on CD, purchased at Best Buy in 1994. Had no idea that it was rare until someone looking through my discs a couple months ago screeched upon seeing it.

Sara Sara Sara, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 16:26 (seventeen years ago)

Both Blue Afternoon and Starsailor did come out on CD in the late eighties but they didn't last long in the racks (at least in Britain) and IIRC the sound quality was suboptimal. I didn't bother at the time since I had (and still have) them on vinyl.

I saw a CD of Starsailor (marked MARKED) going for forty quid in Camden MVE a few months back, right next to a similarly-priced copy of 'Til The Band Comes In on CD. I asked to look at them and they appeared to have been the foundations for several high power Jeremy Clarkson-style demolition derbies - covered with tracks of muck. Tested them out on my trusty Discman and there were so many blips it might as well have been an Oval remix.

Still, they did go eventually so I hope whichever mug bought them obtained some minute pleasure from them.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 16:36 (seventeen years ago)

I must check my copy of "Blue Afternoon" when I get home - I think it's on Rhino? Usu. have good sound quality. I had no idea it was rare, I'm pretty sure I got it 2nd hand for next-to-nothing! Also got "'Til The Band Comes In" on CD - new, in a shop in South London somewhere, in a sale as well!

Tom D., Tuesday, 12 February 2008 16:40 (seventeen years ago)

Heh, I lucked out - bought both Starsailor and Lick My Decals Off Baby within a few weeks of each other back in '90 when both of those Enigma/Retro rarities were still in stores. Coulda sold 'em for a lot of money 10 years ago, of course, before file sharing largely rendered rarity a non-isssue.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 18:12 (seventeen years ago)

not true. this starsailor cd on ebay has 5 days left and already has 5 bids and is up to 26$.

jaxon, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 19:04 (seventeen years ago)

I sold my cds of Starsailor and Blue Afternoon to Greenwich R&TE during a period of extreme skintitude about 8 years ago, and got £4 for the pair : (

Stevie T, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 19:17 (seventeen years ago)

'starsailor' and 'blue afternoon' are both on itunes, too.

bug, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 20:46 (seventeen years ago)

ok so i've been lazy weighing in on this one but HAPPY FUCKING SAD IS TIM BUCKLEYS BEST LP EVER!!! fuckit all> Fuck you fucks

HAPPY SAD .. and that's it

Stormy Davis, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 04:40 (seventeen years ago)

I do honestly think that that 'Happy Sad' is Tim's best. It's totally due to the fact that, as my guy "MaggieGo" indicated ... Tim made the ultimate 3:00 AM Soul-depthing recs..

Stormy Davis, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 04:44 (seventeen years ago)

ah, shit i'm drinking; have I thrown my nom 'Happy Sad' ? I am a 'Happy SAd' guy, sorry !!

Stormy Davis, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 04:48 (seventeen years ago)

who voted for Sefronia? chaki?

jaxon, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 04:59 (seventeen years ago)

the two last albums are OK but you basically only want them for Tim's version of "Dolphins", right?

Stormy Davis, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 05:06 (seventeen years ago)

This is probably the best video EVER on YouTube:

Stormy Davis, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 05:36 (seventeen years ago)

Stormy Davis, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 05:38 (seventeen years ago)

bug, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 05:42 (seventeen years ago)

Surprised self-titled lp was the one with 0 votes

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 12:01 (seventeen years ago)

strange to see lorca all the way down there with 3 votes, but i'm delighted to see 'goodbye and hello' fare well. a moody, engaging masterpiece from start to finish

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 12:20 (seventeen years ago)

Which album was the one with "The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades" on it?

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 12:26 (seventeen years ago)

Tim Buckley Three.

Mark G, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 12:27 (seventeen years ago)

two months pass...

'look at the fool' isn't in the same league as the others.

s/t is a fantastic debut that's clearly underappreciated in these parts

Charlie Howard, Sunday, 13 April 2008 13:01 (seventeen years ago)

Yes, can't believe it got no votes.

Bob Six, Sunday, 13 April 2008 13:33 (seventeen years ago)

Oh and despite its sound, Blue Afternoon comes between Lorca and Starsailor, not before.

This is wrong, isn't it?

No, it's right. Blue Afternoon was recorded after Lorca, even though it sounds like the natural successor to Happy Sad. IIRC, it was a label obligation thing, tho probably one of the best in history...

Naive Teen Idol, Sunday, 13 April 2008 18:30 (seventeen years ago)

eight years pass...

Wow, Happy Sad is on the jukebox in the pub I'm in, which is by no means some hipster hangout.... oh, hold on, the barmaid has just put on some Bowie instead.

They could have been Stackridge. (Tom D.), Sunday, 3 July 2016 21:42 (nine years ago)

Is there any talk of further expanded reissues? Was hoping that the treatment of the 1st lp might extend further through the catalogue.
The live lps are pretty good too. THough shame that Honeyman isn't as wild as Return of the Starsailor's Knebworth set. Not sure if the band is the same.
Would love to find out that there was footage of that Knebworth set. It was advertised in the classified sections of Goldmine/Discoveries for a few years. So wonder what that was if it wasn't what it claimed to be.

Wish somebody would stick out the 2 1970 tv appearances in full on dvd in remastered form too. & since there is very little of him captured on visual footage, whatever else hasn't been released so far. the full OGWT '74 performance etc.

Stevolende, Sunday, 3 July 2016 22:29 (nine years ago)

I dislike the first album, so wasn't tempted by the recent reissue. But I'd snap anything else up in a heartbeat.

Reading the comments upthread about the rarity of Buckley's CDs, it's funny how you can now buy the key albums together on CD for about €12 in one of those "classic album series" sets.

Duke, Monday, 4 July 2016 20:04 (nine years ago)

Stops just before Starsailor unfortunately. & I don't think you can get that straight. Think it is all available mixed up with other tracks on a compi though.

Stevolende, Monday, 4 July 2016 21:40 (nine years ago)

there are 2 1970 appearances? i only know about "boboquivari"...

the event dynamics of power asynchrony (rushomancy), Monday, 4 July 2016 21:50 (nine years ago)

There's 2 tracks from a programme called The Show and the full 26 minute (I think) continuous performance that's Boboquivari
http://www.timbuckley.net/film%2Btv/television/television-index.shtml
has the appearances listed. I was thinking The Show was a longer thing.

But Boboquivari is a live set where the horns keep music playing between the individual songs throughout.

Stevolende, Monday, 4 July 2016 22:02 (nine years ago)

Here's something that was new to me and I only saw cos of that page I just linked to
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tME1oi6yFbc

live on The Midnight Special in 1973. I'm assuming that 's the band he's with on the live set released as Honeyman. Not as wild as the band who he was with on Knebworth. I think that at least the guitarist is different. Knebworth has one that seems to be laying down sheets of notes like Coltrane or something.
