Great thread.

stephen, Sunday, 10 February 2008 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

I thought this was going to be about Tanya Headon :(

daavid, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 05:52 (seventeen years ago)

Too populist.

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 10:15 (seventeen years ago)

I just hate the format. A whole bunch of other message boards use that style too, but it's so damn clunky. 90% avatars and autosignatures, and you can only read 10 messages nbefore you have to load a new page.

gnarly sceptre, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 11:47 (seventeen years ago)

yeah totallly so the message board is pretty much 1 ILM parady.....LAME

Choose Leif, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 11:53 (seventeen years ago)

Japanese popular music from the 20's on....

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 11:56 (seventeen years ago)

I lurk there a lot but don't dare post anything because IHM makes me feel inadequate for not understanding, say, Taku Sugimoto's new "direction".

Matt #2, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 12:30 (seventeen years ago)

I don't mind the stuff they cover. ILM does tend to be lighter on electro-acoustic improv etc type stuff, but could ihatemusic ever produce such classic threads as the Rolling Late-60's/Early-70's Thud-Rock Thread? Or Jazz in the late 70s / early 80s (jazz goes pop, jazz goes disco)? Or Can we talk about early-mid70s West Coast post-psych/pop/rock/folk-rock/country-rock?

It's all in the mix!

gnarly sceptre, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 12:40 (seventeen years ago)

No it would almost certainly never produce those threads, but then I suspect it wasn't structured at the outset - unlike ILM - so that its backbone would be pop - at least that is my impression. I only read it every now and again, but its really if you want regular Takayanagi talk, I'm afraid. Can't be arsed to get a login.

Was it started as a 'parody of ILM'? I've never seen anything about it.

"I lurk there a lot but don't dare post anything because IHM makes me feel inadequate for not understanding, say, Taku Sugimoto's new "direction"."

Plenty of people are scratching their heads at all of this stuff. Its all up for debate, no one knows...and these feelings of confusion are what I often see when I glance at the board.

and there was me thinking this was going to be about the 3 cd compilation of Output Records tracks.

I've been a member there for a few years. Don't post so much now though.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 15:31 (seventeen years ago)

This thread turned me off for good...

gnarly sceptre, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 15:34 (seventeen years ago)

Wow, and ppl say we're rough on teh n00b.

Pashmina, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 15:39 (seventeen years ago)

I didn't think it was possible for a message board to be more po-faced than dissensus, but I stand corrected.

jng, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 16:22 (seventeen years ago)

It's not that bad!

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 16:24 (seventeen years ago)

i lurked there for about an hour one day, but the format just killed me. it's the reason i don't bother with any other messageboards, too. seriously does ILX have the best messageboard format or what????

Mark Clemente, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 16:32 (seventeen years ago)

yeah - i wish the ilx template would necome the msgb template.

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 16:48 (seventeen years ago)

i lurked there for about an hour one day, but the format just killed me.

same issue i had with dissensus. i could put up with the po-faces!

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 16:52 (seventeen years ago)

It's funny, people on other boards seriously hate the ILX format.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 16:54 (seventeen years ago)

Then FUCK people on other boards.

IHM isn't entirely unlike us, evidently:

Pashmina, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 16:55 (seventeen years ago)

It does lack a lol britpop zing crew

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 17:06 (seventeen years ago)

The format of pretty much any phpBB board I find intolerable, mainly because of avatars and signatures. It doesn't help that IHM's color scheme isn't exactly easy on the eyes.

Seriously, though, good design (e.g., ILX) is minimal design, not a bunch of gaudy spangles attached to every post.

libcrypt, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 17:28 (seventeen years ago)

I would imagine that you could turn off most of the spangles on phpBB, but the fact is that nobody does it, which leads to the second rule of good design: The first rule must be enforced by law.

libcrypt, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 17:29 (seventeen years ago)

The ilx format almost feels illicit. In fact, it's basically craigslist.

gnarly sceptre, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 17:44 (seventeen years ago)

Ditto about Tanya Headon.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 22:29 (seventeen years ago)

Why did that thread turn you off, gnarly? ILM has its share of elitism, too...

brightscreamer, Thursday, 14 February 2008 04:51 (seventeen years ago)

...except on ILX, it would come in a sharply delivered zing!

gnarly sceptre, Thursday, 14 February 2008 10:21 (seventeen years ago)

This is the thing, you see - people moan about LBZC but what would ILx be if we didn't have any of it?

DISSENSUS!

What would we be if we had too much of it?

GMTV CHAT!

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 14 February 2008 10:46 (seventeen years ago)

GMTV CHAT

Good find.
