RFID: Jazz/Avant-Garde Drummer/Percussionist

Was in the studio on WKCR a few weeks ago maybe. They played an awesome record of his that had a lot of percussion and chanting (something about "El Diablo") and then eventually drumset came in. He had a Spanish or Portuguese sounding name and I don't think he was super old but I couldn't tell if he was young. His drumming reminded me somewhat of Milford Graves. I wrote to WKCR and no one wrote back.

I still have no idea what RFI/RFID stand for.

The only one I could think who'd fit your description is Nana Vasconcelos: he does jazz/avant-garde music with a lot of percussion and chanting. But he's over 60 already, and I think he mostly plays different percussion instruments, not a straight drum kit.

RFI = Request For Info, I think?

yeah, don't think it's Nana Vasconcelos - at least it didn't sound remotely like the Vasconcelos record I have. It was more stripped down - mostly hand drums, chants and drumset.

maybe it was a track from Cyro Baptista's Villa Lobos/Vira Loucos? his first album. hand percussion, chanting, etc.
