Hmmm, a bit different to the usual MOJO Clapton/Beatles/Floyd canon. Lots of Factory, Rough Trade, 4AD, Postcard,Creation and Sarah releases. There’s some good stuff on here, though there are groups noticebale by their absence, (June Brides, TVPs etc) Good the see the Fire Engines and Felt make a top 50 list thing.
Nice free cd with the magazine too.

Odd mixture of singles, EPs and albums there. Also makes me feel like the indiest person in the world.
― ailsa, Monday, 11 February 2008 16:52 (seventeen years ago)

― Mark G, Monday, 11 February 2008 16:58 (seventeen years ago)
Wicked, I don't have any of these.
Do Radiohead not count as indie these days?
― chap, Monday, 11 February 2008 16:59 (seventeen years ago)
I do not own 14 of these.
― Mark G, Monday, 11 February 2008 17:00 (seventeen years ago)
Pooh Sticks waz robbed.
― Colonel Poo, Monday, 11 February 2008 17:00 (seventeen years ago)
Not having released much on independent labels, I'd guess no.
― Noodle Vague, Monday, 11 February 2008 17:01 (seventeen years ago)
I have 17 of them
― Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 11 February 2008 17:01 (seventeen years ago)
Heh I do not own about 5 of these! Mostly the recent stuff. And James.
― Colonel Poo, Monday, 11 February 2008 17:02 (seventeen years ago)
No Arab Strap, no cred.

― cw, Monday, 11 February 2008 17:14 (seventeen years ago)
I have most of that list in some shape or form, though am very far from being comedy lol indie woman. I don't own a cardigan or hairslides or anything!

is the feature layed out like a fanzine by any chance? festooned with badges and bits snipped out of 70's teenbeat annuals?
― cw, Monday, 11 February 2008 17:27 (seventeen years ago)
a bit predictable that smiths wd be no 1.
― or something, Monday, 11 February 2008 19:17 (seventeen years ago)
Hmmm, a bit different to the usual MOJO Clapton/Beatles/Floyd canon.
They'd be in serious trouble trying to define Clapton, Beatles or Pink Floyd as "indie". :)
― Geir Hongro, Monday, 11 February 2008 19:40 (seventeen years ago)
I have no problems with this list.

Sultans of Ping FC of course are the band who inspired an MM review openly urging readers to murder their fans. Now that's criticism.
― February Callendar, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 00:41 (seventeen years ago)
Yeahh... but wasn't that a "oh but how Suede are wonderful" comparison type review?
― Mark G, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 09:35 (seventeen years ago)
What a MESS!!
Number 1 - This Charming Man; distributed by London Records. 2 - Psychocandy; released on the well known indie label WEA. 3 - You Can't Hide Your Love Forever; released on iconic post-punk indie label Polydor.
Indie should mean INDIE
Do singles OR albums OR tracks - not Heinz bean soup jumble

(Arrow should be a little higher, but hey, you get it, right?)
"PLANES, PAIN, AND AUTOMOBILES" is a horrid fucking headline, fire the sub.
Not as bad as The Sun marking Roy Schneider's death with "LATE WHITE", but still.
― Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 10:18 (seventeen years ago)
16) Wire - Outdoor Miner
Sorry, how is this an indie record?
― Tom D., Tuesday, 12 February 2008 10:20 (seventeen years ago)
Are EMI considered indie these days?
― Tom D., Tuesday, 12 February 2008 10:21 (seventeen years ago)
Wait, is this 1992?
― Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 10:23 (seventeen years ago)
You mean, like PWL records and Jive records?
In the 80s, acts such as Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Billy Ocean and Samantha Fox dominated the indie lists. Which is why indie turned into the name of a genre rather than just "independent" labels. Very obviously, The Smiths were indie, in spite of being on Wea for all of their career.
― Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 10:32 (seventeen years ago)
Um Geir, they were on Rough Trade for all their career.
― Mark G, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 10:34 (seventeen years ago)
They signed to EMI, but split before they moved.
However, all their Rough Trade records were distributed by London Records, which actually was the number one qualifier for independant status.
― Mark G, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 10:35 (seventeen years ago)
Oh, and some years later, they sold their back catalogue to WEA but regretted it ever since (rubbish reissues, underpromotion, etc)
― Mark G, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 10:36 (seventeen years ago)
Yep. Bananarama also set the indie charts on fire back then :)
― Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 10:36 (seventeen years ago)

you can't debate this too often!
― That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 10:40 (seventeen years ago)
"Please Don't Go" is nothing like Hurricane Smith!
MOJO's 50 GREATEST Gloopy Ballads That Punters Actually Bought In The '60s And Early '70s In Preference To The Music MOJO Writes About And Which Radio 2 Manfully Tries To Pretend Never Happened would be a much more interesting poll.
― Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 10:42 (seventeen years ago)
Short term popularity says nothing about quality anyway. (Long term popularity does though).
― Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 11:33 (seventeen years ago)
Don't.
― Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 11:39 (seventeen years ago)
James Brown's still mad popular after 50 years.
― Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 12:11 (seventeen years ago)
Sadly, yes. I am sure most of the stuff he has influenced will not in 50 years though.
― Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 12:34 (seventeen years ago)
He still will be though
― Tom D., Tuesday, 12 February 2008 12:36 (seventeen years ago)
Possibly. My main reason for disliking James Brown so strongly has mostly to do with what he has influenced though.
― Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 12:37 (seventeen years ago)
Really? Why don't you tell us about it some more?
― ailsa, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 12:46 (seventeen years ago)

Well, I think much of the reason for the backclash against "Sgt. Pepper" has mostly to do with what it influenced (lots of symphonic rock, which is IMO excellent, but which was disliked by punks)
― Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 12:49 (seventeen years ago)
IMO
Woah there tiger!
