"blue thing," just beating out "i don't understand you."

fact checking cuz, Monday, 11 February 2008 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

"i heard a sound, i turned around. i turned around to find the thing that made the sound" for sure

I saw some site (a fansite?) that listed all the artists that different "Fingertips" were supposedly parodies/impressions of (I think "something grabbed ahold of my hand" was pegged as Cyndi Lauper). Thinking of how much of TMBG's songs are genre pastiches always tends to make me like them less, though, so I hope that stuff wasn't intentional.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 11 February 2008 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

no, i'd imagine not. or it probably wasn't intentional, anyway.

on another site, or maybe the same, i saw somebody's interpretation of 'fingertips' as the progression from birth to death. ('everything is catching on fire' is conception, the first 'fingertips' is birth, etc.) i'm sure that wasn't intentional either, but it's neat to think about.

So if I voted for "I'm having a heart attack," then ...

nabisco, Monday, 11 February 2008 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

i made this poll a couple months ago and no one voted :(

blue thing, with heart attack and i don't understand you as close runners up

ciderpress, Monday, 11 February 2008 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

It sounds like y'all are thinking of the TMBG.org interpretations. I am comforted to discover that the website still looks exactly the same as it did a decade ago!

Favorites:

everything is catching, yes, everything is catching on fire
come on and wreck my car
what's that blue thing doing here?
the day that love came to play

...of which I think I have to pick "Everything is catching."

haha, yes! the "off-the-wall interp by an english major" was what i was thinking of. i like it, but i was an english major too, so there you go.

bug, Monday, 11 February 2008 20:52 (eighteen years ago)

i always chortle at "I Don't Understand You". Whole thing is pretty awesome.

tylerw, Monday, 11 February 2008 20:53 (eighteen years ago)

Doesn't Pete Stampfel sing on one or two of these?

nabisco, Monday, 11 February 2008 21:01 (eighteen years ago)

This is the only CD worth listening to on shuffle

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 11 February 2008 21:06 (eighteen years ago)

Doesn't Pete Stampfel sing on one or two of these?

yup, the two 'fingertips' parts.

bug, Monday, 11 February 2008 21:30 (eighteen years ago)

This is the only CD worth listening to on shuffle

But that's only because the jerks who released Morgan Fisher's "Miniatures" compilation on CD didn't index all 50 tracks. Buncha jerks.

Hideous Lump, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 03:54 (eighteen years ago)

Heart Attack. I always wished that one had actually been a whole song.

JimD, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 10:34 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't listened to this since I was 10. there are only four songs I still vaguely remember, and weirdly enough, they're all consecutive (the stretch from "aren't you the guy who hit me in the eye?" to "who's knocking on the wall?")

Heart Attack. I always wished that one had actually been a whole song

The name of that song is "No Woman No Cry."
