Downloaded a few MP3s and I quite like what I hear. Where do I start? What do I need to know about Levan and his musique?

nathalie, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pull up to the Bumpah Answerz.

nathalie, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

search: the live 2cd mix which came out a few years back...live at the paradise garage. larry is very much a dj in the old sense of the word...no seamless prog house mixing here. and tito jackson! did you hear me? tito fucking jackson!

jess, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Arthur to thread! did U ever go?

Tracer Hand, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

there're many online tribute sites to Larry Levan & Paradise Garage so a search should bring lots of info. good info in dance history books like Last Night A DJ Saved My Life, too.

here's some personal faves:

NYC (New York 'Citi') Peech Boys – "Don’t Make Me Wait"
& "Life Is Something Special (special mix)"

Padlock (remix mini-album of Gwen Guthrie songs)

Taana Gardner tracks from her 1979 West End album:
"When You Touch Me", "Work That Body"
& "Paradise Express" (practically the blueprint for Deee-Lite)

Taana Gardner - "Heartbeat"
Inner Life – "Ain’t No Mountain High Enough"
Lace – "Can’t Play Around"
Tracy Weber – "Sure Shot"
Loose Joints – "Is It All Over My Face"
Instant Funk – "I Got My Mind Made Up"
David Joseph – "You Can’t Hide Your Love"
Loleatta Holloway – "Strong Enough"

just a sampling, cos Larry Levan was involved in so many great tracks - as soon as this is sent i'll think of one's left out

Paul, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

www.deephousepage.com search the mixes archive for larry mixes there are at least 4 or 5 tapes there.

check http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/1392/larrylevan.html

You can also look for a book by Mel Cherin "My Life and the Paradise Garage" which is a really great read for anyone interested in Disco and dance music history.

jamie thorne, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

His mix of Central Line's Walking Into Sunshine is one of my favorites. It runs around eight minutes in length -- if you're searching around for it.

Great music looking to buy copy on vinyl please can someone help most shops have deleated larry from there files

simon, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
I wnet looking for Paradise Garage on Matos/ILM's advice, and I got the West End remixes thing as it was the only thing I could find. it goes like this:

1. Heartbeat [Club Version] - Taana Gardner Ê Ê
2. Serious, Sirius, Space Party [Club Version] - Ednah Holt Ê Ê
3. No Frills [Club Version] - Taana Gardner Ê Ê
4. Don't Make Me Wait - Larry Levan Ê Ê
5. Let's Go Dancin' [Club Version] - Larry Levan Ê Ê
6. Is It All Over My Face [Female Vocal] - Larry Levan Ê Ê
7. Work That Body [Club Version] - Taana Gardner Ê Ê
8. Give Your Body Up to the Music [Club Version] - Larry Levan Ê Ê
9. When You Touch Me [Vocal Version] - Taana Gardner

And it's very, very good. Are there several different titles with "Paradise Garage" in them? I assume I'm looking for a 2cd live set.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 November 2003 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh wow, "No Frills" is sampled on De La's "Bitties In The BK Lounge", innit? Joy!

Larry Levan: Greatest Salsoul Mixes

Has anyone heard it?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 5 November 2004 23:54 (twenty years ago)

I've heard the first disc, it was absolutely amazing.
The only thing is, shit tends to be reallly expensive.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Saturday, 6 November 2004 00:09 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it was like $35...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 6 November 2004 00:11 (twenty years ago)

I want it.

Does anyone have a good digital copy of NYC Peech Boys - "Come On, Come On (Don't Say Maybe)" or even know if it's been released on CD??? It's fantastic!!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

Spencer,

I've never even heard of that one.

Also wanted to direct people's attention to Sleeping Bag's Greatest Mixers Collection, which has some Larry mixes on it like "(Need) Somebody New" and "Weekend."

Confounded (Confounded), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

I thought that had "It Takes Two" and ESG on it as well. Maybe just the vinyl.

Outsider Enter Port City (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

I think that might be Part 2.

Confounded (Confounded), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

In this Levan mix from 1985, it comes in at about 10:15. It reminds me of Data 80!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

Also, I don't think it's out on CD.

Confounded (Confounded), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

This "Come On, Come On" track is seriously amazing!!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

I've found a 256kbps version of that Peech Boys song on Emule, Spencer. I'll do a YSI once it's downloaded.

Affectian (Affectian), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

Also, anybody who's into this stuff should check out Greg Wilson's upcoming "Credit to the Edit" compilation on Tirk. All re-edits from the Garage era. Thus far I think there've only been a few songs released on vinyl samplers. [here]

Confounded (Confounded), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

Oooooh!

I've found one which is like 12:20 minutes long, but it's actually from another low quality mix and it's actually a couple songs mixed together.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

ysi address to thread please.

Confounded (Confounded), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

The "Oooooh!" was an xpost, but that also sounds Oooooh-worthy!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

This one is 5:25. Is it on the Peech Boys album? I have that burned to cd-r somewhere, I'll hunt it out later.

What's this Greg Wilson thingy? Tell us the best tracks on it please.

Yes, will YSI to the thread, will probably be tomorrow or later depending on how Emule treats me.

Affectian (Affectian), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

I think in the latest issue of Keep On, Greg does a list of the crucial dance tracks from 1981 to 1983 (at Wigan Pier, where he was playing them). It's on page 30 of the electronic version of the magazine. [3mb PDF file here]

Confounded (Confounded), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

What's this Greg Wilson thingy? Tell us the best tracks on it please.

Thanks! That sounds right. Feel free to send to my yahoo email if it's not too much trouble!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

Yeah that Greg Wilson stuff is great! Anyone know if the cd release is far off?

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

damn, no less than two tracks ouf of Scritti's Cupid & Psyche 85, back to back :O
..share the love Mr DJ..
nice to see some Chic in there even if a little digging would have brought up lesser known nuggets by Nile & Bernard.

I said it once, and I'll say it again.

blunt (blunt), Thursday, 18 August 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

My Favorite is....Love honey, love heartacheby Man Friday. Also 'Turn the Beat Around, The Secret History Of Disco' By Peter Shapiro is by far the best history of disco I have found.

Jacobs (LolVStein), Thursday, 18 August 2005 03:00 (twenty years ago)

there's a kinda weird, really cool double 12" of Love Heartache that Vinylmania put out as some sort of Levan tribute. It doesn't actually say Man Friday on it anywhere! It features what they call a Larry Levan Paradise Garage demo mix, an amazing Tom Moulton mix that's way dubbed out (and appears on my Crazy Rhythms mix cd), and one or two other more recent mixes as well. Pretty cool.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 18 August 2005 04:38 (twenty years ago)

Ok, I have 93.9% of the Levan tune so we're nearly there, 139 in the queue though. A YSI shall appear shortly.

That Greg Wilson tracklisting seems pretty good, the only flaw is that he doesn't seem to have dug out many obscurities.

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 18 August 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

Go Go, emule!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 18 August 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

Guh, DiggyD, or whatever he's called, is the only person on Emule with this song and I keep finding myself bumped down the queue - last time I looked I was 1569. Hopefully it'll be done by the time I get home from work. The song is 9.8mb and I'm waiting on the final 500k. If it looks like I'll never get the rest then I'll just YSI this incomplete version. Anyhow, sorry for the boring P2P nerdtalk, just keeping you posted on the progress, Spencer.

Affectian (Affectian), Friday, 19 August 2005 10:03 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for the update! No rush, all I have is time. I've been running soulseek and soulseek-test searches at home and work - hopefully additional things will show up.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 19 August 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

the only flaw is that he doesn't seem to have dug out many obscurities.

You are welcome to consider that a flaw, but I think people often want to hear re-edits of stuff that's familiar to them.

Confounded (Confounded), Friday, 19 August 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone seen this Maestro documentary on Larry et al? It's excellent! Lots of amazing footage.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 20 August 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

I'll have to check out Maestro; thanks, Spencer. Also dig Larry's early colleague Nicky Siano, and Soul Jazz collection Nicky Siano's Legendary The Gallery: The Original New York Disco. Not a remix, but doesn't even need to be, the songs originally selected for built-in dynamics etc.(reviewed by me in Jan. Voice)

don, Saturday, 20 August 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

I forgot and never picked that up for some reason!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 20 August 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Finally! http://s6.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0UOK7L14AJ1VL0ADTAUHQGMKG5

It's great too, reminds me of PSB. In particular, their cover of 'Try it (I'm in love with a married man)'.

Affectian (Affectian), Sunday, 21 August 2005 09:57 (twenty years ago)

the only flaw is that he doesn't seem to have dug out many obscurities.

Maybe so but it just seems like a bit of a cop-out to release 'Dance Dance Dance' again. As great as 'I feel for you' is, I wish Greg would've opted for something just as good but less omnipresent, like 'Your Love is alive' or some of the Made Up Records artists or Paradise Garage Records. Just my kneejerk reaction though, I don't know how Greg Wilson's mind works, and maybe these re-edits are beyond awesome. I'd like to hear it if anyone can YSI the tracks, or share it on Ssk.

After three yrs a thread of mine finally becomes popular on ILM. *sigh*

nathalie starts to cry each time we meet (stevie nixed), Sunday, 21 August 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

My favorite thing from that mix CD is the bassline from "Put Your Body in It".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 21 August 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

So I'm wondering about MFSB - "Love is the Message" (aka The Brooklyn National Anthem and the Paradise Garage uber classic).

However, I'm only familiar with two versions. The one from MFSB's greatest hits which is very soul and the 11 minute instrumental Krivit re-edit from the Last Night a DJ Saved My Life book soundtrack.

Jahsonic talks about a 14 minute remix being definitive. Does anyone know more about this track and the various mixes as well as which would have been played most at the Paradise Garage?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 22 August 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

Such wonderful music.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Monday, 22 August 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

Did you get "Come On, Come On"???

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 22 August 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

xxpost. And what about "Heavy Vibes" which is based on "Love is the Message"?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 22 August 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone know more about this track and the various mixes as well as which would have been played most at the Paradise Garage?

Hmm, I have 4 mp3s of this. a 6:36 version (the original?) and an 11:36 version which starts out identical to the original but is obv. extended. Then I have two files which are the identical 11:01 version, one labelled Danny Krivit Re-Edit and the other labelled Lerry Levan Remix.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 22 August 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

The Krivit re-edit is like a completely different track, so I'm wondering about this 14 minute version and what delights it may hold!

six months pass...
Posted on another thread and I'm excited so I'm putting it here too: http://www.rhino.com/rzine/pressrelease.lasso?PRID=375 (new Larry Levan compilation).

Can anyone point me towards a comprehensive Larry Levan discography of the tracks he produced?

Affectian (Affectian), Sunday, 5 March 2006 21:50 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

1) if something is billed a 'larry levan remix' is an actual remake of the song by larry, or is just a track taken from one of his mixes?

2) i seem to recall reading that levan didn't really mix records together, that his prestige comes from being a superb selector. this true?

NI, Saturday, 15 December 2007 15:37 (seventeen years ago)

The former. Larry did plenty of remix/production work.

2) i seem to recall reading that levan didn't really mix records together, that his prestige comes from being a superb selector.

well, he's certainly an alright mixer, especially given the equipment that he was on and the fact that disco is hard enough to mix as it is. but yes, his reputation is based more on track selection than any flashy transitions or turntable theatrics.

s. morris, Saturday, 15 December 2007 16:42 (seventeen years ago)

ah thanks, which of the levan compilations are mixed together, and are they any good?

also, if anyone has a link to a comprehensive discography of his productions/releases please share!

NI, Sunday, 16 December 2007 21:13 (seventeen years ago)

Someone on another thread mentioned a Levan remix of "Once in a Lifetime". Does this really exist? The song on the Rhino compilation is just the album version.
