Tindersticks - The Hungry Saw (2008)

After my first listen I'm just about ready to call it their best since Simple Pleasure. At the very least it's considerably more dynamic and engaging than Waiting for the Moon was. Early standouts are the title track, "The Other Side of the World" and "Mother Dear". A little sad that Stuart now has to provide his own backup vocals though ("Boobar").

wikipedia says:

In 2007, a stripped-down line-up of three of the original band, Staples, Boulter and Fraser, spent time writing and recording in a newly equipped studio in Limousin, France. They were joined by Thomas Belhom on drums and Dan McKinna on bass, with Ian Caple engineering.

one of their best albums, maybe their very best. i'm shocked that it's as good as it is. my favourite record of the year, easily.

i LOVE the guitar on Mother Dear. The Turns We Took is one of their finest songs.

need to revisit this. first reactions were "oh this is okay but unnecessary" but maybe it's better than that? I still feel like nothing will ever touch those first two albums but whatever

It doesn't touch the first three albums (I say Curtains is on par with the first two) but it's better than anything they've done since. What separates it from their more recent work is its consistency throughout. There's no single track that leaps out and grabs you (maybe Yesterday Tomorrows is as close as it comes) but it's so solid. Their recent albums all had amazing songs on them (Sometimes it Hurts from Waiting for the Moon or Dying Slowly from Can Our Love...) but too many tracks that didn't stand out.

they never really made the leap, did they? one of the best live albums i've ever seen, and i attribute at least 30% of that (and their best album, simple pleasure) to their drummer, who has left the band, so....

i've heard this new one. it's pleasant, but some of it seems like rehash to the point of unintentional self-parody. like the endless vamping on the final track.

I'm surprised how great this is as well. It's less grandiose than they've been in the past and I attribute that to the departure of Dickon Hinchcliffe, the grandstanding violin player (but, then again, what violin player isn't grandstanding?)

Just got tickets to the Brooklyn show.

Weird. Love Tindersticks but I kind of missed "The Hungry Saw" - presumably I was into something else/not in a Tindersticks mood at the time.

This sounded great on a chance playing just now, though:
