the closest thing FZ got to we're only in it for the money during the 70s. if it's cheesier and more crass than that earlier landmark, it's really only b/c the 70s were cheesier and more crass than the 60s (plus you could get away with making blatant and blunt pussy-and-cock jokes/lyrics on a major label more easily in 1978 than in 1967). plus it's even MORE pop-friendly and, frankly, more FUN to listen to than WOIIFTM.

sentence-by-sentence:
maybe, yes, no fucking way.
I refuse to defend this LP.
― sleeve, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 06:20 (eighteen years ago)
although the fact that I own it is a defense in itself.
― sleeve, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 06:21 (eighteen years ago)
i don't understand. this record is awesome. everyone i know loves this. whats he issue?
― chaki, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 07:03 (eighteen years ago)
te keyboard sounds are rad. even the wanky solo songs are good. and the cutups are best noize music. poppy songs (bobby brown and jewish princess) are genuine catchy yummm.

adrian belew
i know i know but I just can't get past the lyrics. wasn't this the album that won the shark-jumping poll?
― sleeve, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 07:22 (eighteen years ago)
This is unsane and the only thing I'll defend is the Bobby Dylan skit that still cracks me up. Oh and 'Dancing Fool' plays well when drunk at 3AM
― baaderonixx, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 09:38 (eighteen years ago)
I mean insane, but i guess it's also kinda unsane
― baaderonixx, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 09:39 (eighteen years ago)
maybe you should stay with yo momma?
― cutty, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 12:07 (eighteen years ago)
now I think you know what you are: you're an asshole
― baaderonixx, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 13:18 (eighteen years ago)
It's no Joe's Garage, but I'd wager to suggest he made worse albums than this one.

Well, if he hadn't recorded, released and drawn heat for "Jewish Princess", he never woulda felt the need to write & record "Catholic Girls" to balance things out a few months later.

I saw him on this tour, and can report that the band was in great form...
― henry s, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 18:33 (eighteen years ago)
His crass comedy songs sound worse and worse the more time passes, but there's some great music in there as well. This was the first FZ album I bought...hardly ever listen to it now.

Hell yes. "Defend The Indefensible: Thing-Fish," anyone? Thought not.
― unperson, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 21:09 (eighteen years ago)
Nothing that contains "Bobby Brown" is indefensible.
― Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 21:15 (eighteen years ago)
thing fish is genuinely terrible.
― chaki, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 21:34 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, I don't exactly see how Sheikh is indefensible, it's got so many great songs. "I've Been In You", "Flakes", "Broken Hearts Are For Assholes", "City of Tiny Lites", and "Wild Love" all come quickly to mind. Though "Jewish Princess" is one of the few Zappa songs that make me feel truly uncomfortable.
I agree about Thing Fish mostly because it is just so uninspired and lacks much original material. However, Zappa has live versions of a few of the Thing Fish songs that are excellent, especially "The Evil Prince".

One more time for the world...
― contenderizer, Thursday, 14 February 2008 00:53 (eighteen years ago)
ok I will defend City Of Tiny Lights, forgot about that one.
― sleeve, Thursday, 14 February 2008 00:58 (eighteen years ago)
Yes. "Joe's Garage II" and "Joe's Garage III", to name but two
