Dear MTV guy,
Happy birthday. Remember that metal fest my friend Mike suggested? The one with all the metal bands with names ending in "-ion"? Have you put any more thought into helping organize it?
Take care,

Anybody hear Ian Mackaye filling in for him on his radio show (I did not):

Hello. Great news. Ian MacKaye, from the bands Minor Threat, Fugazi and The Evens will be filling in for me on my weekly radio broadcast on Indie 103 this coming Tuesday night 02-12-08 from 8 to 10 PM PST. He will be live. I don't know what he will play and I am jealous that I can't hear it in real time but I'll be on a plane heading back from South Africa so unlike you, I will have to wait! I bet it's going to be great and the price is right so if you get a chance, check it out. http://www.indie1031.fm/ gets you there. Thanks. --Henry

I used to watch his spoken word videos in a flophouse trailer in the country that was ostensibly an older guy's home but that was mostly utilized by high school kids for fucking and drug use (older guy tended to indulge in both... he was actually a real nice guy).
I have oddly pleasant memories of hanging out with trippin' rednecks on couch cushions on a ratty disintegrating carpet, watching Rollins rant on a 16 inch b+w tv. Haps on the bidet, Mr. Rollins.

xxpost: The Talking from the Box that I had was a double cassette spoken word. Was probably on VHS too, though I never saw it.

VegemiteGrrl, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 00:20 (fifteen years ago)

The Boxed Life and Talking From the Box came out at about the same time and shared some material iirc. One was audio, the other was video.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 00:25 (fifteen years ago)

Ooh maybe it was The Boxed Life. That sounds more familiar...hmm.

VegemiteGrrl, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 00:28 (fifteen years ago)

It had that great little bit about talking with Tom Waits at Lollapalooza or something. I need to listen to that one again.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 00:37 (fifteen years ago)

There was a time where I could have repeated it all from memory. The only thing I remember right now is this snippet, in best Hank voice "And by the way: FUCK YOU."

VegemiteGrrl, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 00:40 (fifteen years ago)

He mustve done basically the same monologue at the Enmore as he did at the Melb Town Hall, in that case :)

Not necessarily, there was enough different material across that three-hour show and the night before, also at the Enmore, that both got released as double CDs.

basically just a 2/47 freak out (sic), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 00:41 (fifteen years ago)

I used to have them all up through The Boxed Life on cassette, so when I decided to replace them on cd I went to eBay. I found the Deep Throat boxset, which is comprised of the first four Quarterstick albums, for something ridiculously low like $5 there and won it for its opening bid. I actually apologized to the seller when I sent him the money through paypal because I felt like he was getting robbed. He told me not to worry about it, because he bought them off eBay about a year earlier.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 00:45 (fifteen years ago)

^ which encouraged me to go to two consecutive Enmore shows the next tour, when of course he did half the same material across the two nights. And spent 40 minutes one night on "the first time all my friends in DC saw The Clash!" and 40 minutes the next on "the first time all my friends in DC saw The Ramones!"

(One of them got released as a double CD again though. The NEXT time he came, I only went to one night out of five [in a smaller theatre*], but he shot three of them and edited a DVD out of 'em. The Trans-Siberian railroad story was way better the night I went than the version he used.)

*same place Keating! The Musical was filmed

basically just a 2/47 freak out (sic), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 00:47 (fifteen years ago)

The story about Marius off Think Tank was incredible too. Weirdly, I met Marius' brother at a party in Melbourne a few years later, even then he was still pretty jazzed that Henry had said so many great things about Marius.

VegemiteGrrl, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 00:47 (fifteen years ago)

The Quarterstick albums have been sort-of-remastered and reissued on 2.13 recently (and all now knocked down to $% too), with his very first spoken album as a bonus disc on Big Ugly Mouth.

It’s just awful. I figured if I put it in for free you couldn’t get too mad about how wretched it is.

basically just a 2/47 freak out (sic), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 00:50 (fifteen years ago)

% 5

basically just a 2/47 freak out (sic), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 00:50 (fifteen years ago)

Are the remasters of those any good? Because there are whole passages on the originals which are so poorly recorded that they're almost unintelligible.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 00:53 (fifteen years ago)

it's a "best they can do" situation, really

Think Tank is probably the best of the spoken word albums, I think. Especially if you don't count the single-story Eric The Pilot

basically just a 2/47 freak out (sic), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 00:56 (fifteen years ago)

ha yeah:

Also, it's great to have Phil Klum go over these tapes and do all that can be done to clean them up and even out the levels.

basically just a 2/47 freak out (sic), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 00:58 (fifteen years ago)

I was just bouncing around his site and found out that this exists. Pretty fascinating, 'cause a) I've had lengthy talks about jazz with Rollins at the end of two different interviews, and I know he's a major jazz geek, and b) the selection's actually pretty great. A fair number of "hits," but a lot of relative obscurities, too.

that's not funny. (unperson), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 01:38 (fifteen years ago)

oh Think Tank is so great. love the outpouring of enthusiasm for Rollins talking CDs here. maybe we should do a poll of them or something? i have no idea how many there even are.

some dude, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 01:48 (fifteen years ago)

I'll be honest and say I haven't heard a lot of more recent ones (and there are A LOT of more recent ones), but from 1990-2002 or so I was an avid collector.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 01:50 (fifteen years ago)

saw this dude a few months ago with three other friends, we all laughed til we cried.

my favorite was the eBay story about him outbidding a dude just so he could call him up on webcam, break the record on camera, and tell the dude how much he hated that band cause they were jerks when they opened for him in '81.

sleeve, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 01:53 (fifteen years ago)

HA!

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 01:53 (fifteen years ago)

i have no idea how many there even are.

I bet I'm the only one who has all of them, but even I haven't listened to all of them

basically just a 2/47 freak out (sic), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 03:11 (fifteen years ago)

We should poll them all anyway so we can reminisce about all the awesome stories he tells...like when he worked at that animal testing lab and tried to free all the animals, lol

VegemiteGrrl, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 05:42 (fifteen years ago)

My favorite awesome-then-sad Rollins story is about "Paul" the homeless guy from Human Butt (the album I'd probably end up voting for).

I had the audio version, always found it funny that it ends with a "hate hate hate" rant, and then sums up with "the bands thesedays aren't doing this kind of grass-roots playing anymore, they're missing out on a lot of fun"...

(or something like that)

Mark G, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 09:13 (fifteen years ago)

The audio version is HEEEAAAAAVVVVIIIILLLLY abridged.

I can imagine, yeah. "Books" usually are, unless they're 11 CDs or something...

Mark G, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 13:49 (fifteen years ago)

the abridging gets super-abrupt at the end tho, so don't attribute any clunkiness to the audio (it does wrap up quite sharply though, he is obv q depressed abt D. Boon's death and the uncommunicative end of Flag)

(I always kinda assumed he would have recorded a much longer version and would do a 4- or 9- or whatever -CD edition when the rights reverted from Warner, but I guess not)
