I listen to them once a year, they are very strange. They sound like their name implies.

Do you dig them?

I worship the ground Mr Merritt walks on.

four years pass...
Will the new Gothic Archies album be garbage??

the new album is just a compilation of the songs they (& the Baudelaire Memorial Orchestra probably) have released on the Lemony Snicket audiobooks over the last six or seven years

I have tried to find these songs online for maybe a year but to no avail.

In an interview, Stephin Merritt said he expected the album to sell more copies than 69 Love Songs... which may or may not be true, depending on how fanatical the Lemony Snicket diehards show themselves to be.

But even if it is just a compilation of songs, will it be any good? Or will it just clutter up Stephin Merritt's cataloque like the Eban and Charlie soundtrack? There are three songs on the Gothic Archies myspace. I had already heard "Scream and Run Away," I liked "Walking my Gargoyle," but "Crows" is terrible.

Both 2005 AND 2006 have been bad years for Stephin Merritt fans. Only boring soundtrack releases.

Also, I feel like this is going to taint the Gothic Archies' legacy... previously, all of the soundtrack work was done by "Stephin Merritt", now he's trying to mix business with pleasure by using the "band" concept for a movie!

But thank God it was just the Gothic Archies, the worst of his groups. There are a handful of tracks from the EP's that are good, but overall I find the songs to be less interesting than the ones from the Showtime album.

She's Goth to Have It

It's the lazy and immoral way to become super hip. (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

It's really good - wicked and humorous, Tom Lehrer meets Edward Gorey. 13 songs, one for each book, plus two bonuses, putting it just over 40 minutes (I think the 40+ min. thing is a requirement by Nonesuch). And while Merritt intentionally sang higher on i, on this one, he sings in that looowww baritone voice we're used to. I like "Crows," but I admit it sounds like some grand arena rock song in disguise.

The sort of movie released as 13 books-on-tape, and the sort of now that happened sevenish years ago

whoops on calling it a movie, but I still believe think it's twisted that he is using one of his "bands" for a commercial endeavor... I mean, where can he take the Gothic Archies after this?

Oh and "The Tiny Goat" is one of maybe three GA songs I like... which is probably about five minutes of music total.
