Since we're gonna poll all classic Prince albums, let's do the Love Symbol album next.

I think this is one of the top 5 Prince albums ever, alongside 1999, Sign o' the Times, Lovesexy, and Emancipation, so let's have a go at it. I left the two segues out, because I don't think anyone wants to vote for phone conversations between Prince and Kirstie Alley.

I have a hunch "Sexy M.F." will win this by landslide, which would be a bit unfair, 'cause there's so many good tunes here. The only one I don't much care for is "3 Chains o' Gold", and even that has a certain pompose charm.

Tuomas, Saturday, 16 February 2008 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

Though I'm quite tempted to vote for "Sexy M.F." myself... But maybe I'll settle for "The Max" - it doesn't have much pop appeal, but the housey groove is ridiculously strong.

Tuomas, Saturday, 16 February 2008 14:13 (eighteen years ago)

I have a soft spot for "7" despite its ridiculousness.

3 Chains o' Gold

abanana, Saturday, 16 February 2008 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

one of his worst albums.

titchyschneiderMk2, Saturday, 16 February 2008 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

Really? I mean, I can see why people who like pre-Lovesexy Prince might not like the smoother, fuller band sound of the NPG, but I think this album has some wonderful songs by any measurement.

Tuomas, Saturday, 16 February 2008 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

Certainly his best nineties album after The Gold Experience. I voted for "The Morning Papers" just over "Blue Light."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 16 February 2008 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

I'm torn between 7 and My Name Is Prince.

Jordan, Saturday, 16 February 2008 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

Awful album, particularly "Sexy Motherfucker" which is one of his worst ever songs.

I like "Blue Light" though.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 16 February 2008 17:50 (eighteen years ago)

7

remy bean, Saturday, 16 February 2008 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

Great record. voted Blue Light

outdoor_miner, Saturday, 16 February 2008 17:55 (eighteen years ago)

The 45 rpm 12" of "Sexy M.F." played at 33 rpm is the BEST.

Eazy, Saturday, 16 February 2008 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

Speaking of "7", does anyone know what the seven things Prince wants to fall are? The lyrics sound awfully Biblical, but my knowledge of the Bible is limited. I guess it could be the seven deadly sins, but that doesn't seem to fit the lyrics.

Tuomas, Monday, 18 February 2008 07:38 (eighteen years ago)

"Blue Light" is kinda weird tune, mainly because the backing track is reggae, even though the vocals are typical Prince.

Tuomas, Monday, 18 February 2008 15:44 (eighteen years ago)

Blue Light is great.

(it would be pretty weird if Prince had never done a token reggae tune!)

Jordan, Monday, 18 February 2008 15:44 (eighteen years ago)

I guess so, and it is a nice tune, I just find it hard to connect the two elements in my mind.

Tuomas, Monday, 18 February 2008 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

This album RULES! A LOT! And yet... I wouldn't put it in my top 5 by the man. In any case, I'm going for "3 Chains."

Davey D, Monday, 18 February 2008 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

there nice moments here, morning papers is a good song but a lot of the songs and potentially good melodies are ruined by awful generic production or tony m or some other stupid way of shoehorning the npg into the songs more.

titchyschneiderMk2, Monday, 18 February 2008 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

"Sexy MF" is one of those totally perfect Prince songs that only Prince could pull off. If you've ever heard a house band try to cover it, you see immediately -- it's bleeding ridiculous. "Shakin' that ass, shakin' that ass!"

Same way that only Prince could give this look:

Actually, every year on Prince's birthday, Midwest Product and Dykehouse come together to perform as Paisley Product, and they're a) able to pull off all sorts of songs that I thought only Prince could get away with, and b) much better than their regular music.

Last chance to vote.

Tuomas, Thursday, 21 February 2008 17:13 (eighteen years ago)

I just listened to this again, I'd forgot how nice "Sweet Baby" is. The multiple backing voices by Prince plus the synth sound have an almost aetheric quality.

ILX System, Friday, 22 February 2008 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

What I expected, but "Sexy MF" -- ugh.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 22 February 2008 00:05 (eighteen years ago)

Aw, no votes for My Name Is Prince.

Have we done Dirty Mind yet?

Jordan, Friday, 22 February 2008 02:11 (eighteen years ago)

I guess we could do it next...

Yeah, I thought My Name Is Prince would get at least some votes. Nice to see "7" win and not "Sexy MF" like I thought, though both are obviously great songs.

you'll still be saying baby not tonight

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Monday, 10 July 2017 04:34 (eight years ago)

"i wanna melt with u" has always been my fave on this. there wasn't an "eye" instead of the "i" in the version i have. what a fake world. that song is pure sex.

Ich bin kein Berliner (alex in mainhattan), Monday, 10 July 2017 12:14 (eight years ago)

there isnt one perfect song on here but its all quite listenable and enjoyable. not as good as D&P overall.

Sexy MF is awful.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 03:16 (eight years ago)

I don't hate it, but it's awfully pedestrian. His worst major single, for sure.

iCloudius (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 04:20 (eight years ago)

Nah, it's a great track, though 'Love 2 the 9's' is even better!

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 06:56 (eight years ago)

Alfie otm.

That song is actually the punchline of an anecdote I know about a friend’s encounter with His Royal Badness that I am afraid will lose something in the translation to text without the comedy Swiss accent

Bingo Little’s Breakout (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 14 December 2017 01:41 (eight years ago)

If I had to trim this album down to 45 minutes or whatever, you can guarantee that some of those minutes would be taken up by 'Sexy MF'

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Thursday, 14 December 2017 07:06 (eight years ago)

dismal turnout for 3 Chains O' Gold in this poll. :(

Id delete sexy mf and my name is prince and 7 too (so leaden, and I still have no idea what its about) if I had to make this 45 mins. All you need is the max, love 2 the 9s, morning papers, sweet baby, blue light, sacrifice, continental, damn u, arrogance, God created woman, 3 chains. Love this album but his song writing was less important than showing off the band.

The solo in "The Morning Papers" is the only thing wrong with it.

I have a hunch "Sexy M.F." will win this by landslide

Instead, "7" won on Joe Biden terms.
