Joe Jackson - does he still got it?

I haven't heard 2008 Rain yet. But the song Invisible Man was on the radio today and it sounded like he was able to imitate his first 3 albums (Look Sharp!, I'm The Man and Beat Crazy.

So anyone care for his last two albums? The first is called volume 4 because he is trying to continue along the line of the first 3. The next probably could be called volume 5.

three years pass...

1) I saw Joe Jackson on some late night talk show and he sounded great. I didn't expect him to be so theatrical, but he was belting his brains out.

2) I was having a terrible day yesterday, just really really bad, so I did some errands and then stopped for a six pack at the big grocery store near my apt. Don't normally buy beer there, but the situation was just horrible and I wanted nothing more than to sit with my dinner, a beer, and forget about the rest of the day. I went to the self checkout and then "Steppin Out" started to play on the store system. My brain lit up. I've loved this song since I was, uh, 7 years old? It was so nice and comforting to hear an old friend at a low time, their store music is usually not noticeable or something horrible, like Train. Not yesterday!

3) He's still got it imo

When I worked at Burger King they'd play "Steppin' Out" all the time. Only my co-worker had told me the name of the song was "Into the Light" and was by Billy Joel. Needless to say I confused a lot of record store clerks with that one.

(had a similar experience with Gordon Lightfoot's "Sundown", which I could have sworn was not 30 years old! It sounded so modern...)

There's a lot to love in Joe Jackson.

Here he is on the talk show! (sorry about the link -- nbc pulled the clip from their site apparently)

Your coworker needs remediation before dispensing any further information about anything. Not a bad guess, I suppose, but totally wrong. It's unfortunate that you were derailed from Steppin Out on account of that person.

the thing is that I never really questioned it. obviously the BK speakers are quite weak and we're moving around all the time so from what I could hear, it totally sounded like Billy Joel, and none of the lyrics were really audible. I later heard it in a grocery store and had to memorize all the fragments of the lyrics I could hear so I could type them into a search engine.

I can see that -- Billy Joel is also a total copycat.

This thread is reminding me I need to check out more JJ, I like Costello a lot and also dig Squeeze so I figure I'll be able to get into more albums than just Night & Day.

I love, love, love "Night & Day". I love the sound of a Yamaha CP-70, the beastly piano w/pickups.

sorry, those were both meant to be links. I like 'Fast Forward' a lot, not so sure about 'A Little Smile', but it's growing on me

I am watching the Yale course on Game Theory and the professor just used a Joe Jackson lyric to illustrate a point.
