What's the best music you've ever heard blasting out of a car?

true story, circa '82: in the parking lot of a roller disco in rural Maine, King High School Guy With A Car Jeff O'Connor got a round of applause just for playing "everybody's working for the weekend" so loud the ashphalt shook. "you wanna piece a my heart you better start from the start".

I usually only heart utter SHIT coming from people's vehicles. Last weekend a guy in a Jeep came up behind me in traffic & he was listening to some awful dance music, like what those two "club guys" on SNL listen to. It dawned on me then that that music sounds a lot like the demo music that was programmed into organs in the 70's. Remember being in the mall walking past a paino/organ store and the organ was playing all by itself!? That's what the guy was listening to.

But to answer the question, the best thing that I can recall was hearing Psycho Killer coming out of Pete Ragle's car (an older kid in town, who I didn't know) - I knew the song, but remember the event because I didn't know anyone else who listened to the Talking Heads at the time.

maybe musclecars should have built-in euro-trash beat generators like those organs in the mall that played by themselves, you just turn the ignition and OON-shi! OON-shi! OON-shi! We have the technology!

Nine times out of ten, all I hear is lowest-common-denominator- catering hip-hop, but just last week -- and I'm not extolling the virtues of this, but rather merely pointing it out as strange -- I heard someone positivley *BLASTING* (we're talking Slayer volume here) - "Feels So Good" by trumpeter Chuck Mangioni.

most unlikely car/music/neighborhood combos -->

1. pulling out from behind Albee Sq Mall and onto Fulton St, maybe the hiphoppiest hiphop intersection ever, a beat-up chevette type car full-up with black dudes and absolutely blasting "zombie nation"

2. the guys at the 24-hour flat-tire fixit garage next door to me, who usually are rocking hi-energy salsa from out the windows of an idling car while they work, had the aforementioned "Psycho Killer" at high volume at like 3 in the morning, clearly really enjoying it... COOL.

I heard The Animals "Don't Bring Me Down" blasting out of this pimped ride with all the windows down cruisin' through town just the other day and it was cool as hell. Oh wait that was me.

I like the cars, the cars that go boom.

Music coming from another car changed my life. I was ten years old and at my dad's company picnic. Due to the strict religious ethic in my family, I was never allowed to listen to "secular" music. But there was some guy, parked at the edge of the lake blasting Van Halen's 1984 (just the first three tracks, actually) and I couldn't believe my ears. I'd heard some pop music before (Michael Jackson, Prince, etc.), but this sounded big and scary and I liked it. I know it's why I still hold 1984 in the highest regard.

Nine times out of ten if you hear music blaring out of a car (usually a Honda Civic) in Limerick it'll be Dr. Dre's "Chronic 2001". Worst of all tho' was when I seen this guy in a beat up Ford Fiesta BLASTING out "Cause I got high" while smoking a joint. He thought he was shit-hot.

Definitely Kraftwerk's The Man Machine. On 8-track.

Senior year in high school crusing the boardwalk of Hampton Beach, we listened to "Sometimes I Rhyme Slow" over and over again, it was cool at the time.

When I was in my late teens and living in a small town in Iowa, I heard Let's Active blasting out of a car at an intersection. (One of the early EPs, I think.) At that time, I thought that I was the only person in town interested in alternative music, so I followed them on foot for a mile or so until I lost them. I never saw them again after that.

usually the ones that you can hear from 2 blocks away. like all the gabbers down here in holland, some years ago. black volkwagens, build out and tuned, usually dark windows, and with a system that guarantees eardamage. i like it! can be anything with a boomin' bass sound.

Boy from university came to small town - I was 15 - he was from university - we went out drinking with his friends in the 'Avenger' - then we were standing outside the car above the beach, by the flax bushes, in the wet dark, and 'Let me stand next to your fire' was playing, I said the chorus sort of absentmindedly and he said 'don't say that.'

ps, you guys are all genuine plural of genius

slutti, Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not in a car, but...

A friend of mine told me about how he was blasting a Funkadelic record (this was back in mid-70's) in his college dorm .. The cleaning lady, who seemed to be about 70 years old, knocked on the door.. He thought "Shit - now I've pissed off the nice little old cleaning lady" - He turned down the music & wen to talk to her .. She said, "Is that Maggot Brain? I got that record at home."

Dave225, Monday, 6 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Walked outside a couple hours ago and there was this dented red mid '80s LeBaron convertible just BLASTING Curtis Mayfield's "Think", from the Superfly soundtrack. YES.

Nate Patrin, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I once saw Edward Kowalc*yk semi-discreetly (= with the window rolled up but visible/audible nonetheless) rocking out to "Dolphin's Cry" on the Sunset Strip. Not cool!

felicity, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I got really pissed off one night and just started going for a walk, really long time, and at like 3am in Times Square, this totally pimped out huge black dude in this superfly convertible pulls up next to me. I mean I've never seen a car like this, it's like a fucking delorean from the future. Except also a convertible. It is the pimpest car in the world. What is he listening to? Mozart. REALLY REALLY LOUD.
