this futuristic racing game was the ne plus ultra of console tech in those early days of 3D console videogames and what's more you could take the disc out of your playstation, put in the CD player and it would PLAY! here was the soundtrack:

1. "We Have Explosive" - FSOL
2. "Atom Bomb" - Fluke
3. "Loops Of Fury" - The Chemical Brothers
4. "Tin There" - Underworld
5. "The Third Sequence" - Photek
6. "Leave Home (Underworld Mix)" - Chemical Brothers
7. "We Have Explosive (Herd Killing)" - FSOL
8. "Firestarter (Instrumental)" - Prodigy
9. "U Six" - Fluke
10. "Musique" - Daft Punk
11. "2097" - Source Direct
12. "Titan" - Photek
13. "Petrol" - Orbital
14. "Afro Ride" - Leftfield

apparently a new version is imminent, retooled for the widescreen, HD generation. but i can't imagine playing this without having huge, slick, breakbeat rave music pacing the action.

q: what songs should be on the soundtrack to the new one?

Tracer Hand, Monday, 25 February 2008 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

Tracer Hand, Monday, 25 February 2008 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

Dom Passantino, Monday, 25 February 2008 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

blueski, Monday, 25 February 2008 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

M.I.A. - "XR2"

HI DERE, Monday, 25 February 2008 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

trashtalk - tank girl (hystereo rebrand)

and what, Monday, 25 February 2008 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

ledge yeah, aka "wipeout xl" -- the definitive versh of the game imo

they should keep the old soundtrack as a hidden option or something

Tracer Hand, Monday, 25 February 2008 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah it was certainly the best soundtrack, maybe 'cause most of those tracks were already in general rotation - it was the '90s and there was time for electronica.

I think wipeout 3 was up there with 2097. Zone mode in Fusion was something else though... should save this discussion for ILG.

ledge, Monday, 25 February 2008 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

the F-Zero in-game music was better

blueski, Monday, 25 February 2008 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

lol "electronica"

Tracer Hand, Monday, 25 February 2008 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

electronica should now be renamed "lol electronica", it would save us having to write it all the time.

baby, I'm ready to lol.

wipeout fusion was all shitty breaks. including a shitty breaks remix of 'stakker humanoid'. it was a shit game all round.

that 2097 sdtrk is slightly off - it's the CD that came out around the same time. the trax that came with the game proper are:

Future Sound Of London: "We Have Explosive"
Future Sound Of London: "We Have Explosive: Herd Killing" (Intro)
Future Sound Of London: "Landmass"
Fluke: "Atom Bomb (Straight Six Instrumental)"
Fluke: "V6"
Chemical Brothers: "Dust Up Beats"
Chemical Brothers: "Loops Of Fury"
Photek: "The Third Sequence"
Underworld: "Tin There (edit)"
Prodigy: "Firestarter (Instrumental)"
CoLD SToRAGE: "Canada"
CoLD SToRAGE: "Body In Motion"

(cold storage was sony's in-house composer. he did the entire soundtrack for the saturn and PC versions, they didn't bother re-licensing all the "hits".)

haitch, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 00:16 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't have a Playstation, so I bought the regular audio CD version of the soundtrack to the original Wipeout. Good times.

caek, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 00:16 (eighteen years ago)

Faze Action - In The Trees (Carl Craig Remix)
Justice - Phantom Pt II (Soulwax Remix)
Freeform Five - No More Conversations (Switch Remix)

The Macallan 18 Year, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 00:38 (eighteen years ago)

Dubfire - Ribcage
Pryda - Balaton
Sasha - Who Killed Sparky?

The Macallan 18 Year, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

hmm... Tim Finney's 'space battle techno' to thread

The Macallan 18 Year, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 00:47 (eighteen years ago)

wtf? Last time I talked up the 2097 soundtrack here I was laughed at.

Also yes, 2097 (the actual game disc)was definitely the best soundtrack. Even now it stands up well.

nine years pass...

just hearing the original Cold Storage soundtrack for Wipeout -- ha, this is really fun. All of the tracks are around 5 minutes, and they each feature 3-4 changes, so it's like a rollercoaster of bubblegum acid/trance

Dominique, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 13:17 (eight years ago)

I am eternally grateful to Wipeout HD for introducing me to Noisica.

still associate this game with the snippet of underworld's cowgirl that is playing when dade aces it on a big screen in hackers

ogmor, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 14:02 (eight years ago)

picked up the new version for ps4 for me and mk2 couple of weeks ago.
insane grafx.
but swedish house mafia.
that said, i think you can tweak with the soundtrack options and choose what you get to listen to.

mark e, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 14:09 (eight years ago)

there's a new... wait what?

haven't played wipeout since I swapped the PS3 for PS4, now it's time to buy this collection, I guess

mh, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 15:13 (eight years ago)

wish they did some licensing blitz and had all the songs from every edition, though

mh, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 15:15 (eight years ago)

I know, right?

a butt groove but for feet (DJP), Wednesday, 28 June 2017 15:21 (eight years ago)

(It has been very gratifying to see that my Wipeout skills haven't degraded seriously since my PS3 was destroyed by overeager toddlers; I was never that good at it but I came back in only slightly worse than I was when I first started playing. The 2048 tracks are pwning me hardcore, though.)

a butt groove but for feet (DJP), Wednesday, 28 June 2017 15:24 (eight years ago)

it'd cost a lot more, but I don't even care

for some reason the last time I played I kept hearing that Noisia song, "Machine Gun", and it's now stuck in my head

mh, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 15:24 (eight years ago)

my PS Vita was lost at some point when I moved in a hurry years ago. I still wonder whether it just got lost, my horrible ex had it, or what

rip PS Vita

mh, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 15:26 (eight years ago)

haha i never played this game but i remember buying the 2097 soundtrack after hearing it at a borders listening station in the late 90s, i was probably 14 or so

marcos, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 15:35 (eight years ago)

oh wait, not that anyone cares, but I meant PSP earlier, not Vita

mh, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 15:42 (eight years ago)

six years pass...
