"She'd be a whole lot prettier if she smiled once in a while/Even her smile looks like a frown/ She's seen her share of angels in this... devil's town"

This is a coming of age song for me. Reminds me of the summertime and turning 13...good times, good song...ah nostalgia.

You really dropped the ball by not making this a poll.

― ian, Monday, 25 February 2008 20:19 (eighteen years ago)

yeah but he can make up for it by making a Key_songs_of_the_adult_alternative_scene poll

Now she feels safe in the bar on fairfax
And from the stage I can tell that
She cant let go and she cant relax
And just before
She hangs here head to cry
I sing to her a lullaby, I sing
Everythings gonna be all right

Rockabye, rockabye

― omar little, Monday, 25 February 2008 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

i believe the bar he sings about is "genghis cohen"

― omar little, Monday, 25 February 2008 20:25 (eighteen years ago)

I kind of misremembered this song for a few years as being a really garden variety sleepy ballad with no ridiculous spoken verses, and then heard it again recently and was like oh yeah, now I remember why this song is a legendary piece of shit.

In 2006, Shawn put out a new single, entitled "Beautiful Wreck", from the album 9th Ward Pickin Parlor. The single enjoyed modest success, and was featured in the popular Cities 97 Cities Sampler, Volume 18.

The "Nashville with a tan", I believe, is the writer stating how he sees people in Nashville and California (where the song is set, Fairfax and Hollywood are both in California) are both the kind of people with a plan. California is known for alot of tan "surfer dudes". Therefore, this place in California is like Nashville, except they are all tan.

Glad to know the proper name of this song because it is my least favorite song.

Very hard to write a good L.A.-truthteller song. I mean, David + David, Don Henley dozens of time...

John Stewart's "Gold" is still the gold standard.

My dad really liked this and my mom made fun of him for it, she did great voice-cracking impressions of the "eveRYYYYthing."

Closer to Mr. Mullins's time, "Screenwriter's Blues" and "Drinking in LA" are both pretty good, certainly better than "Lullaby."

I got an unplanned treat when I caught Shawn Mullins play this tune live at the Hard Rock Cafe in the Beverly Center once when I stopped off for a burger. I was by myself.
