"father of christian rock" ... he and his band people! hit pop charts in 1960s with note-for-note cover of zombies' "i love you" ... left pop behind to pursue the twin towers of jesus and rock (his semi-legendary "we need a whole lot more jesus [and a lot less rock and roll]" was ironic, as he spent the rest of his life promoting both ("why should the devil have all the good music?" he sang) ... long dirty hair and ripped dirty jeans and hippie ways did not endear him to the church ... worship of long-dead guy with long dirty hair did not endear him to rockers ... prefigured almost all the struggles and frustrations and ideas and rocking righteousness that the rest of the christian rock community went through 20 years later ... arguably the curt flood of christian rock, suffering for both his religious and musical beliefs while paving the way for others ... pioneering indie rocker who released dozens of albums on his own solid rock records ... adored by frank black, who swiped the title "come on pilgrim" from him, among other indie rockers who followed ... soundscan does not acknowledge his existence ... a monumental outsider figure ... RIP

"I Wish We'd All Been Ready" is one of the weirdest, most haunting songs of all time. The live version I have, with him tying in various topical issues to the rapture, is a fascinating piece of music. "Chernobyl... France..."
