Sonic Youth Art Exhibit Coming to the Whitney?

At designer Marc Jacobs's party last week, Thurston Moore told us that Sonic Youth are preparing to launch an art show, which they hope will travel the world over a number of years, including a stop in New York. "We're putting together this museum show that's utilizing all the artists that we've worked with on different covers and concepts, and that's going to happen for two or three years," said Moore, after the band played "Kool Thing" at Jacobs's request. "It's going to happen in young museums, there's one outside of Paris, there's one in Malmö, Sweden," he added.

The show is expected to kick off in June at LiFE (Lieu international des Formes Emergentes) in Saint-Nazaire, featuring works from artists who have collaborated with Sonic Youth over the course of their 26-year career. "It's going to be a lot of artwork by a lot of artists that we've worked with through the years, people like Chris Wool, Dan Graham, Vito Acconci.” Not only will works of art be on display, but the band plans to perform at each location. As the band is starting to write their new album this spring, according to Moore, art fans may even get a sneak preview.

A location for the show in New York has yet to be confirmed, Moore says, but at least one museum is already attracted to the project — or else Moore's trying to attract its attention. "I think the Whitney is somewhat interested," he said, "but it’s all about scheduling."

The title of the thread answers itself.

thread title makes even more sense with parentheses removed!

yea they've been pretty involved with the art world for like the past three decades -- they've basically always had a relationship with it. didn't kim gordon even write for art forum during the 80s?

Cracked me up.

But of course, pretentious doesn't equal bad. And this sounds like a pretty natural extension for them.

i'm well aware of their connections to both the early eighties east village scene and being ahead of the curve in working with artists both for cover art (pettibon, richter, etc) and performance (marclay, the white columns stuff, etc). i'm not even going to rack my brain for music video collaborations..

it seems odd they want to graduate to full blown touring museum spectacle.

With Kim especially, it wasn't just an association/connection, they came out of the Art World...the "we're so hardcore/punk" aspect was the pose, more likely, though obviously they had fun with it. If anything I would see it more as a "hey if we put our name on this we can get even more exposure for artists we dig and get "kids" more involved with art".

Why? They're not getting any younger.

contenderizer, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 21:53 (eighteen years ago)

that's an interesting take, that the pose is inverted. hell, i even saw a gallery show of kim gordon's art once. can't for the life of me remember what it looked like though.

they played in punk bands, but Lee had the Flucts with David Linton, played in Glenn Branca's The Ascension band, and the first version of Sonic Youth was Thurston, Kim and Ann Demarinis making noise at the White Columns Noise Fest.

Yeah, KG graduated from art school pre-SY. TM's Dad was a music and philosophy prof and composer-pianist but AFAICT from reading he was a pretty serious punk rock fan first, actually much more so than I'd expected. (I think I always just kind of assumed that the 'punk' thing was half-ironic.) I think it might be more a case of not fitting into either 'world'?

Sundar, Thursday, 28 February 2008 01:56 (eighteen years ago)

("he" = TM, obv. Not that he was a punk rock fan before his Dad was a prof but you get my meaning, I think.)

I kind of doubt that this will be a really great art exhibit, as, you know, art exhibits go but I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

Sundar, Thursday, 28 February 2008 01:59 (eighteen years ago)

has anyone from Sonic Youth (aside from pre-SY) ever done anything outside Sonic Youth that was memorable? Doesn't seem to have stopped them though.

haha, I'm straining to think of something.

I think two of them had a kid or something

gabbneb, Thursday, 28 February 2008 03:05 (eighteen years ago)

haha so OTM.

And thought I explained it, my grammar is annoying me so:

AFAICT from reading he was a pretty serious punk rock fan first

AFAICT from reading, TM was a pretty serious punk rock fan pre-SY, and in fact, before he ever really got more heavily into 'art music'.
