why are people so enamored with miss e? i like a lot of hip hop but i can't find anything good about this. why do wire critics trip over each other to extoll miss e's virtues? why are people so enamored with timbaland's production on this disc? it's really stock. please, somebody tell me what's good about this. without regurgitating anything you read in the wire.

It's interesting that "rap fans" tend to despise Missy Elliot with quite a ferocious passion (qf Hip Hop Connection voting "Get Ur Freak On" as worst single of 2001, or the disgust in the hip-hop community when she gets nominated as one of the greatest rappers of all time).

I've never seen the joy of her either to be honest. Middling describes it best, and when you start talking about the production, that tends to mean that the song itself is shit.

She is fat.

I can't help but think full-on hatorade of missy is at least partly wrapped up in gender, race, and image issues (see above). I imagine the majority of her fans have never picked up 'the wire'. timbaland's production tends to thrill me (the newlectro kybrd in 'minute man' more than the indian samples [which are going to get quite old if not already]), plus he produced my state's anthem "raise up". When we say 'production' in the context of hip-hop it is actually referring to the music ie 'the song itself' minus vocals. which brings me to missy who you have to admit is pretty unique and all about her own thing, which I s'pose brings out a love-it-or-hate-it reaction in most people. I think she's a cool gal myself. her songs are smart, striking, and out of left field.

That's the thing, I'm guessing it's the same with a lot of other people as well- I like Missy Elliot, I'm a sucker for those, for want of a better word, "sassy" take-no-shit female musicians, but with her... it just seems so... meh.

Judd Nelson, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't like hip-hop really, but I love Miss E. Mostly it's the production, which blows my head off. Maybe there's much better stuff out there; I dunno. I just know I like this.

She is no better nor worse than Ice Cream Tee. Wherefore she deserves about as much press as Ice Cream Tee got.

I don't like the way her voice sounds, that's why I'm not too into her. There's a couple songs I like, but her rap voice is just no good, and not "no good" in the way that P. Diddy's voice is in that ridiculous "DIDDY" song that is so great.

Ally, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

so missy's not bad enough for your tastes? diddy gets all the breaks.

gilgamesh, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

look out John, I.C.T.'s a hall of famer (under construction): http://www.phillyhiphop.com/halloffame/hoficecreamtee.htm

You have to either be terrible or you have to be great. Mediocre is the worst thing you can be because then you're like everyone else. What's the point?

Ally, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mediocrity involves much more work than it gets credit for.

she definitely does do her own thing, and her music definitely is striking, but obviously your definition of smart and my definition of smart are quite different. what exactly do you find intelligent about her music?

fields of salmon, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The moment you hear it you know it's her. Timbaland does save his best stuff for her, but you know, for example "One Minute Man" wouldn't have anywhere near the character it does if was by, say, Brandy or Destiny's. She takes no prisoners, reflecting the sparse landscape of the music, and she has a tempo range to match the changing rhythms.

Nick, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Marc, she's phat, there's a big (?!?) difference.

nathalie, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

She has good tunes/sounds. The 'limitations' of her voice means she thankfully doesn't indulge in those awful post-Whitney vocal histrionics (I saw Mary J Bilge 'giving it her all' on 'Later' last night - god she was rub.) And she makes funny vids.

yes. listen to 'lick shots' just once, and then tell me where are the legions of other mediocre records that this is supposed to be just like? (so i can buy them). i haven't heard anything so crunk, ever.
