One of the least indie top 40s ever, and yet it has Gene in it.

Dom Passantino, Friday, 29 February 2008 14:15 (eighteen years ago)

New Radicals. Fucking love that song.

nate woolls, Friday, 29 February 2008 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

Pretty, if not significant, then telling week in UK pop this one. Launch of Eminem being the most obvious, this was also the highpoint of Steps' chart domination of the turn-of-the-century, plus Suede and Catatonia were failing to bring in the "Be Here Now" sales figures that their labels were anxious for them to get.

Dom Passantino, Friday, 29 February 2008 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

Can't believe all this is 9 years ago.

nate woolls, Friday, 29 February 2008 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

Expect Duffy to appear on Echo Beach equivalent in 2017.

Dingbod Kesterson, Friday, 29 February 2008 14:55 (eighteen years ago)

Wasn't "My Name Is..." kept off the top by Flat Eric, thereby denying Chas and Dave a UK number one hit for the second time?

Dingbod Kesterson, Friday, 29 February 2008 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

^Indeed it was, although I was more surprised that "Turn Around" wasn't a #1 single. It certainly sounded like one.

Dom Passantino, Friday, 29 February 2008 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

No Scrubs, easily.

blueski, Friday, 29 February 2008 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

Flat Beat totally rocks it.

chap, Friday, 29 February 2008 15:25 (eighteen years ago)

lol i remember the wire magazine got "down with the kids" by enjoying flat beat.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Friday, 29 February 2008 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

I remember the week before (screen goes all swirly)...

I was in the Virgin Megastore, and "The Cartoons" all bundled in, with their funny ray-guns and the girls in boots and all that. They saw the big display panel with many copies of their single and were all YEAH! ALRIGHT! WOO! excited. Then one of them turned around and said "oh, look there's Flat Eric's" at a similar display for "Flat Beat" and they were all "ah well, yeah.. (sigh) (sad nods)"

Mark G, Friday, 29 February 2008 15:32 (eighteen years ago)

Another Level Featuring Jay-Z

Most accurate carbon dating of this top 40 surely.

I still really like Flat Beat! The Wire OTM

DJ Mencap, Friday, 29 February 2008 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

Wonder if they'll come on stage at Glastonbury and perform with him?

Dom Passantino, Friday, 29 February 2008 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

Whitney. Narrowly beats TLC and Mr Oizo, if only because it - miraculously, defying logic, defying all "our" assumptions - made you want to forgive her everything. Who cares if she only did those '99 songs because Celine Dion had colonised her territory? They're still disarmingly close to perfection, and they say a lot about their moment. And who would not have wanted to live there forever, however unsustainable?

February Callendar, Friday, 29 February 2008 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

i like flat beat but i think it's gotta be 'no scrubs'.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Friday, 29 February 2008 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

FebCal OTM - it's Whitney for me too.

mike t-diva, Saturday, 1 March 2008 09:53 (eighteen years ago)

Even in a relatively weak year, there was always something decent in the UK chart. Voted New Radicals.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 1 March 2008 11:39 (eighteen years ago)

i think basement jaxx did a 'it's not right.../flat beat' mashup

blueski, Saturday, 1 March 2008 13:24 (eighteen years ago)

i remember a kid in school being bitteryly disappointed with whatever and ever amen after hearing ben folds on viva2, some strange european sky channel we got cuz we didn't have real sky anymore. fond memories of playing bass over 'walk this land' with my GUITAR amp turned up to 20. digging beverly knight cuz she big upped prince on some channel 4 promo thing he did for that new power soul album. seeing lock stock and two smoking barrels and buying my first fhm magazine. flat beat stopped me from listening to blur 13. got my first copy of cool edit pro, started making dodgy but awesome dance tracks.

good times!

Crackle Box, Saturday, 1 March 2008 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

ha, that kid in school bit doesn't make any sense. ilm and doing 10 other things at once doesn't work for me.

Crackle Box, Saturday, 1 March 2008 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

"buying my first fhm magazine"

The day you became a man.

I love New Order, The Smiths and some Electronic - but I can't recall 'Vivid' at all

Toucan3000, Monday, 3 March 2008 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

It's the one with the boring non-tune and the bloke who can't sing oh wait

Noodle Vague, Monday, 3 March 2008 22:19 (eighteen years ago)

This is hard but I think I'll vote "Flat Beat". Still got my copy.
