advice for a small college radio station (numark idj idj2 ipod mixer)

i run a (really) small college radio station (1800 students at the school total, generally not more than 80 DJs per semester, webstream only w/ the exception of a couple leaky FM receptors in dorms that i dont think work). we're in need of some new equipment--right now we have two technics 1200s and two pioneer CDJs all plugged into a shitty vestax four-channel mixer (itself plugged into the main console). the vestax is falling apart, and needs to be replaced.

right now we have a 1/8">RCA cord plugged into one of the inputs as our ipod input. more than three quarters of our djs play from their ipods and it will probably be more in the future--most of them are apparently too dumb to even begin figuring out how to plug their ipods into the goddamn vestax. i am considering getting the numark idj2 to replace the vestax mixer and give the DJs an easy way to play music from their ipods, but i dont know if its the ideal solution--does anyone have any experience with it? we're not looking for a major professional piece of equipment (both because maybe 10 of our DJs actually "mix" and most of them have their own mixers, not to mention i dont trust the DJs as a whole with nice equipment given what theyve done to the vestax), but i dont want to buy a piece of shit, either, and i sort of get the feeling that ipod mixers are a scam (ive read three or four positive reviews of it, though). is this thing worth $600, which would probably be a major portion of our equipment budget for the year? any other suggestions for ipod-ready setups (aside from the question of replacing the vestax mixer)? all advice welcome.

I have bad feelings about Numark gear, both their sturdiness and feature set. Denon make a much better version of this for a little less than twice the price, the HD-2500. Instead of having a dock for the iPod, you plug it in via a USB hub, it takes a minute or two to read the contents, then it works like the numark... assign a track to each controller and mix away. However, unlike the Numark, it doesn't have a built-in mixer. Still, I feel like Denon gear is better built and has better features. It also is probably a lot more confusing then the denon.

Another option is the new Pioneer CDJ-400, which is similar to the other Pioneer CDJs except you can plug an ipod or USB drive into it. It looks like a beefed up CDJ-200 and doesn't have some key advanced features that the 800/1000 have, and of course you'd need two.

The day Pioneer comes out with a unit that has two CDJ-800 style platters and a basic 4 channel mixer, with USB input, is the day I go into business as a mobile DJ.

yeah the HD2500 looks amazing, but its probably too much for the djs (or maybe i have too low an opinion of their abilities)... the cdj-400 is probably a better option.

the problem here is that i need something that will both make it easy for basic "i just want to plug in my ipod" people (not too confusing) and satisfy the people whod like the opportunity use vaguely professional equipment that they couldnt afford on their own (not too boring/easy).

i may need to have two solutions, like some CDJ400s connected to a mixer connected to the broadcast mixing board and then also an ipod dock plugged directly into the console that DJs can just plug in, press start and go with.

i mean, i get you, but we're not talking rocket scientists here; we've even made training more intensive and written up clear instructions to be posted in the booth and still twice a week i or tech staff get a call about not being able to figure out what to do

max, Friday, 29 February 2008 23:46 (eighteen years ago)

that's insane. that's completely insane. do they have to have other students help them to put the songs on the iPod? can you call the dean and have them dematriculated?

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW

ok im being unfair--the other major problems are that some DJs seem to be indiscriminately unplugging shit and turning things off, and then our less-bright DJs cant figure out how to reconnect everything; the vestax sometimes just doesnt work (the ac adapter plug is loose and will turn off); and that some of them cant figure out how to switch between "phono" and "line" or "a" and "b" or turn the fucking volume up.

I love psychology as a pre-M.Ed. major
so many boobies

El Tomboto, Saturday, 1 March 2008 00:04 (eighteen years ago)

that is also unfair but anecdotally very true for my undergrad experience

^^
im going to hook this up to a speak and spell and tell my DJs that its broadcasting on a "special frequency" that only they can hear

max, Saturday, 1 March 2008 00:22 (eighteen years ago)

well the reason I suggest that behringer is that the level controls are REALLY BIG and SIMPLE so you have a better chance that they won't fiddle with the wrong shit by accident

El Tomboto, Saturday, 1 March 2008 00:24 (eighteen years ago)

I mean yeah real broadcast consoles are a long way off from typical DJ or recording mixers, for that very reason

El Tomboto, Saturday, 1 March 2008 00:24 (eighteen years ago)

yeah we're buying a new one of those soon too

max, Saturday, 1 March 2008 00:27 (eighteen years ago)

thirteen years pass...

Thread revive... I'm going to be helping out on a ultra-small station project. Just internet broadcasting for now. Maaaaye low-power FM in the future?
