El Tomboto, Saturday, 1 March 2008 10:29 (sixteen years ago) link

I imagine minimal bleepy beats with loads of sci-fi film lazer zap effects over the top. In my imagination, this sounds great, in reality it would probably get boring really quickly.

I don't know what it would sound like in real life, but would be curious to hear a mix mp3

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 1 March 2008 13:38 (sixteen years ago) link

although i have to say that third electric as well as some of Tom's stuff seems more like "space exploration" than an actual battle.. cruising at eight light-years per second, nearby displays flickering with contour maps of the neighborhood's plasma topology.. a moustachioed captain sitting alone in a corner, intently studying diagrams, playing absent-mindedly with a rosary, waiting for something that hasn't happened yet. into which category i'd also put "ginger" by speedy j.

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 1 March 2008 13:41 (sixteen years ago) link

So - any mixes?!

toby, Saturday, 1 March 2008 13:54 (sixteen years ago) link

redshape ra podcast but that is all his own tracks i think

r1o natsume, Saturday, 1 March 2008 14:56 (sixteen years ago) link

ha i was just coming back to ask if the redshape RA podcast was what people were talking about when they talked about this. that's one of my favourite mixes ever, so i could definitely do with more in a similar vane...

toby, Saturday, 1 March 2008 16:56 (sixteen years ago) link

Toby have you seen Tim's '2007 that was' thread? Quite a few recommendations and tracks on there.

I think it needs to sound epic, bombastic, brutalist and largely shorn of anything that may be construed as hippy or loved up or anything else along those lines.

Matt DC, Saturday, 1 March 2008 17:02 (sixteen years ago) link

Also am I right in thinking, more synth-driven and not very percussive or funky?

Matt DC, Saturday, 1 March 2008 17:22 (sixteen years ago) link

i'd argue there's a vague hippy connection there if you trace it's lineage through house and techno back to 70s german synth epics. there's definitely a trace of gottsching and tangerine dream in some of redshape's more arpeggiator driven tracks, and alot of the synth washes you here in say that len faki track mentioned above are straight klaus schulze.

r1o natsume, Saturday, 1 March 2008 17:43 (sixteen years ago) link

c2 remix of faze action 'in the trees' is the best of the bests i think.

or something, Saturday, 1 March 2008 17:51 (sixteen years ago) link

Tombot your tracks are great but as Tracer says, maybe a bit too friendly for what we're talking about. I like 'space exploration techno' as well though.

I think this stuff needs to be a lot bigger, and maybe more evil or at least ominous sounding. The second half of this is sort of the sound I think of when someone says 'space battle techno'.

Matt DC, Saturday, 1 March 2008 18:16 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't know about the rest, but the Audion remix of Olga Dancekowski sounds exactly like it was composed of samples of an actual space battle.

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 1 March 2008 19:21 (sixteen years ago) link

holy crap Matt that 3rd Face track gets outrageous!

here's something very different in feel and more anticipatory of action rather than action itself, but there is a feeling of potential dread underneath it i think -- those far-away drums!!!

apologies for keeping on bigging up the same songs over and over again, i'm sure i've mentioned both of these tracks a million times before. i keep posting them though because they're essentially impossible to find.

Zander VT – Then & Before (Redshape Remix)
http://www.zshare.net/audio/69145811966207/
2007 wasn’t just about deep house revivalism, and there was a sub-trend of melodramatic, synthesiser-heavy tech-house tracks whose ridiculous sci-fi melodrama had me group them together under the banner “space battle techno”. Ink & Needle did several tracks in this vein, but my favourite remained Redshape’s remix of “Then & Before”, perhaps because of the way it draws out the exponential curve of its climaxing groove – spacey percussion and squirming riffs and apocalyptic strings that make me think of spaceships shifting into warp speed and stars stretching from pinpoints into lines. Except that the track just keeps spiralling towards ever higher and higher climaxes, so it’s like you’re speeding past stars whose line-of-light just keeps stretching further and further. One for everyone a bit “over” subtlety. (see also: Ink & Needle’s “Seven”, various Audion tracks and remixes)

Faze Action – In The Trees (Carl Craig Remix)
http://www.zshare.net/audio/697269001fbf07/
Whatever the trend was, Carl usually got there first. If his remix of Delia & Gavin’s “Revelee” helped (re?)initiate the space battle techno sound I described above, this unlikely remix of Faze Action’s old disco-revival classic was an unexpected pinnacle. Given the familiarity of the original, it remains such a shock (almost an illicit thrill) to be confronted by little more than a heavy throb of evil synthesisers, like a swarm of wasps marshalled to attack at random in time with a house beat. When those unmistakable disco strings finally come in, the menacing groove that surrounds them imbues their aristocratic refinement and dandyesque flair strange new sensations and implications – like the fine poetry that sends young people to war, they are at once a document of culture and of barbarism. (see also: Craig remixes of Siobhan Donaghy and Junior Boys)

Steve this isn't a real genre tag, we're just playing around.

Matt DC, Sunday, 2 March 2008 16:03 (sixteen years ago) link

oh for god's sake you people, stop w/ the pointless recommendations

here's the brief:

i want stuff that sounds like REDSHAPE and RECENT CARL CRAIG REMIXES

ok?

matt dc: that's EXACTLY the sort of thing i want to hear

tracer: hmm that reminds me a lot of david caretta. very much french electro-techno.

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 2 March 2008 18:40 (sixteen years ago) link

you mean nitsch & gleinser i assume? i like it -- ultra space opera bombast -- but i think the second thing i posted, danny zelonky a.k.a. low res -- is possibly my favorite techno track of all time. you need to have a quality system or good headphones to properly hear the bass actually. i've listened to that track on bad headphones and the entire effect is lost, all the vast, cavernous, deep air of it gets squashed.

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 2 March 2008 21:50 (sixteen years ago) link

we've already talked about low res on the sublime thread. it would be nice if sublime made a comp of all of their singles.

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 2 March 2008 22:17 (sixteen years ago) link

that track is very SAW 85-92 though - think i prefer "amuck"

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 2 March 2008 22:20 (sixteen years ago) link

"i want stuff that sounds like REDSHAPE and RECENT CARL CRAIG REMIXES"

my recommendations are all on point then! or do you mean old stuff? you should definitely hear the len faki track i listed if you haven't already - all laser-like moaning moog leads and super dramatic chunky chrome synth stabs. and the redshape remix of markus enochson, this is like the 10th time i've talked about it on ilm but it really is great, i think i described it as the soundtrack to a space battle victory march. i reckon 'bell clap dance' is pretty space battle.

I propose that we make it the law that no one is allowed to recommend anything on this thread without pinpointing the archetypal scene in the sci-fi movie that it is meant to soundtrack. I think mine involves a gigantic planet-eating monster of some kind.

Matt DC, Sunday, 2 March 2008 23:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Can I request that no-one turn around and blame me if/when this term becomes thoroughly annoying?

Vahid did you hear those Ink & Needle tracks? I'll come back with a few recommendations/uploads later.

Ok I think I have one of these. Might be a bit too glossy and not knarz-y enough, but very ominous and spacy... I think this is totally wonderful.

Virtualmismo - 'Mismoplastico' (Serge Santiago Maxi Edit)

The space battle scene that I feel this best soundtracks would be the bit in 'Elite' (ZX spectrum or BBC Micro version) when you attempted to teleport, it went wrong, and you were attacked by swarms of really tough to kill 'thargoid' aliens in hexagonal spaceships...
