I am in a state - I have a million things to do before I move out tomorrow and lots more things I haven't done which I should have done already and generally things are STRESSFUL so what music should I put on to calm myself down?

NB while I am in a state I will not be taking any of your advice, I will be playing my newly bought Steely Dan CDs and trying to feel "smooth" with them. But answer the question anyway!

In a Silent Way + Bubble Bath = Soothing

trying to feel "smooth" with them

There are laws against that, you know.

Vaguely serious answer -- er, nothing, usually. When I'm trying to sleep I sometimes put on calm music but in moments of stress...hm. I think I actually would prefer something loud!

Steely Dan? Oh dear.

Attached by Orbital, off Snivilisation, the last track. Lay down, put it on quiet, turn the lights off. I use this technique instead of asprin / paracetamol to rid myself of headaches. It works.

smooth jazz.

Steely Dan is a billion times better than Orbital.

"Steely Dan is a billion times better than Orbital."

Prove it. I want charts and statistics.

a friend introduced me to Cowboy Junkies - Whites Off Earth Now! as a good relaxificator. Plus maybe one of the bestest album titles as a bonus

also i have been liking the dusty trails album. that would be viv trimble (luscious jackson) and josephine wiggs (breeders) it is on the smooth jazz / elevator music/ loungey side. apparently J.wiggs interests have been migrating to recording and production and i can hear that on this album she has had a blast creating the landscape. i am sad that josephine does not sing on it. anyways its a mello listen and easy on the ears. only a guest spot by emmylou harris kills the mood for me (nothing against emmylou, it just doesnt fit)

Steve Roach's "Streams and Currents" unless ambient stuff irritates you. Don't listen to Steely Dan to relax unless you can tune out the lyrics, which are so cynical and dark-hearted that they make me lose sleep.

Will I get yelled at for suggesting Yo La Tengo's "And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out"?

Nate Patrin, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Steely Dan worked very well actually. I know the lyrics are dark burnished jewels of spite etc etc but for some reason I can tune them out. Also they're funny too!

Tom, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

garbage by autechre, gorecki's third symphony, or the third eye foundation remix of la defense by yann tiersen would be what i would listen to...

robin, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

tom, shouldn't you be like PACKING 'n' MOVING outa there. ;-)

nathalie, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

SPIRIT OF EDEN by Talk Talk.......and, if that fails, AT WAR WITH SATAN by Venom.

Al Green. I mean, come on -- no ambient for you, young man!

Michael Daddino, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That new Aarktica album from the Darla Bliss-Out series. The last, long cut is the best New Order-ish thing anybody's done since Bedhead called it quits.

Curt, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Put on anything by John Beltran.

mt, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Put yr new Black Sabbath album on Tom. And make it LOUD.

Dr.C, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom, it is clear that you need a heavy dose of the Dubya Kay. If you calm down, you won't finish all the stuff you need to do soon enough, and you'll only be MORE stressed out when tomorrow hits, like "WHY THE FUCK DID I RELAX YESTERDAY WHEN I COULD HAVE BEEN GETTING A JUMP ON THIS SHIT?!"

WHEN IT'S TIME TO PACK YOU WILL PACK HARD

I think the Streets is very chilled having just got it last night.

Ronan, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Brian Eno - Music For Airports.

Aything by Harold Budd or Steve Reich would fit the bill too...

Mark, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Paul Dolden- L'Ivresse De la Vitesse.

or Fushitsusha- Double live

Hope I helped.

Julio Desouza, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ben Webster.
