i thought a roots poll might have generated a bit more interest. have they fallen off the popular radar that much? (can't say i'm that arsed about them these days myself).

favorite is probably Illadelph or Things Fall Apart, but i'm gonna vote for Game Theory since that was kind of a strong late-career surprise. first couple records leaked from Rising Down are pretty good, too, looking forward to that.

I only know Do You Want More? through Phrenology. I went with Illadelph Halflife, maybe because it was the one I came in on. It's the only one I actually enjoyed. I still have lines from that album spinning around in my head and I don't really listen to that much rap these days. And the music probably has the most variety on it. I remember being real disappointed in Things Fall Apart because it didn't seem to go anywhere.

best moment on things fall apart: beanie sigel's guest spot on 'Adrenaline!' i've listened to that rhyme endlessly.

organix has some good tracks, too

"Phrenology." It's the band's highwater mark creatively. Also the weirdest of their records. The only problem is that I own it on vinyl, so I have to keep getting off my ass to flip it over.

'silent treatment' is so good

Game Theory got my vote.

GT > Illadelph > DYWM > Organix > Phrenology > Tipping Point

It's the most consistent, solid Roots album.

Game Theory, although I love Phrenology almost as much and Tipping Point is a little underrated. Psyched for the new one.

Most srsly overrated rap group in the history of time. Didn't start making good records until Tipping Point. Didn't start making great records until Game Theory.

maybe a tad overrated but things fall apart is a fine record. to be honest i'd happily forget about them until they have a re-appraisal in 10 years time.

I'd put that Paul Barman EP over a lot of Roots albums.

Six tight tracks of Prince Paul-produced horseplay with hopelessly unique rhyme patterns vs. 80 minutes of glorified jam-band with slam poetry outro. Do the fucking math.

there was nothing jam band about the roots until maybe phrenology.

(well okay, DYWM had solos and shit, but it was the '90s! illadelph and TFA were straight beats)

Things Fall Apart as a studio album, but i listen to Come Alive more often.

Dice RAW is great...I've never even heard his solo album(s?)!

TFA: their best (and most $$$) sounding album (seriously, it sounds so lush even compared to that crop of voodoo/like water for chocolate/mama's gun/etc.), tons of great malik b + dice raw verses, not a lame beat in the bunch, and it doesn't sound yet like they're trying too hard for some kind of crossover hit.

okay i think it is a "chewstick"

so i basically realized somewhere over the last four or five years that the roots are probably one of my favorite bands. i'm more interested in anything they might be up to sonically/musically than, say, what radiohead is up to. i feel like they're consistently surprising, fascinating, fuse a whole bunch of disparate elements into one insane, riveting whole and are the rare band whose new record is always better than the one that came before it.

i'm also wondering if they're approaching a phase in their career where they've been so consistently celebrated that they're now almost underrated -- like, "oh, another roots record, i'm sure it's good, i'll pass." there are downsides to being consistent.

but, yeah, i'm incredibly excited to hear what the next record sounds like, and get this way every time i hear there's a new roots record on the way.

live, though, i think they fall apart. no pun intended.

I went with Phrenology; the Jay-Z Unplugged's not too shabby either.

Can't remember if I voted here or not, but if I did I'm sure it was for Game Theory. I pulled out Things Fall Apart a couple months ago, and I can't really listen to it anymore. It's so fluffy now. It feels very 90's, and not just for nostalgic reasons -- it's almost unreasonably upbeat, considering a lot of its (purported) subject matter. It's a party album for down white folx circa ten years ago, and I can't hear past that anymore.

If we had to depend on white music fans to eat, we would starve to death.

It's like a parody of the early 90's "rap n' jazz!" trend. And holy shit, live drums? DID YOU FUCKING SAY RAP MUSIC WITH LIVE DRUMS????!!!!?!??!! Get me some undies, I just had such a fit of dumb-ass out-of-step rockism-where-it-couldn't-belong-less that I shit my form-fitting pre-faded jeans and I think it's running into my Chucks.
