This is really, really tough. Without going back and relistening to them all, I'm going to go with "Carl Perkins' Cadillac".

I could easily have voted for Panties In Your Purse, Zip City, Gravity's Gone or A Ghost To Most, but in the end had to go for Uncle Frank, the song that got me into the Truckers to begin with.

Ooh... Marry Me, Sounds Better in the Song, Zip City, Loaded Gun...

Come on, ILM DBT fans. Weigh in, turkeys!

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

I'd have to go with Zip City.

A. Begrand, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 19:33 (eighteen years ago)

carl perkins' cadillac (but i haven't listened to the new album much yet and i don't have the first album so i haven't heard them all)

ciderpress, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

Too many great ones to choose from. I finally had to go with Marry Me, if only for that boogie guitar at the beginning and the opening lines "Well, my daddy's didn't pull out, but he never apologized." Carl Perkins' Cadillac is a close second, but really any of these is worth a vote.

Cooley absolutely owns the new record.

Cooley absolutely owns the new record.

"3 Dimes Down" has some of his best lyrics in years.

A. Begrand, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

zip city

It's tough to argue against that one, as it is one hell of a song. But still, it's all about Uncle Frank for me. The riff, the ridiculously depressing ending...it instantly leaps to the front of the "pity the plight of the hardworking, honest farmer" song, which is a particularly fecund genre.

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

"Zip City."

Runner-up, off the top of my head: "Shut Up And Get On The Plane."

Inexplicably underrated: "Bob."

And yes, I can tell the difference between Cooley and, um, the other guy now.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

Women Without Whiskey. "Night's a girl who's gone too faaaaaaaarrrr..." consistently makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end.

Also big props for Shut Up and Get on the Plane. I haven't heard any of their records since Dirty South though.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Monday, 10 March 2008 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

Honestly, it's nearly fucking impossible to choose between:

Carl Perkins' Cadillac
Gravity's Gone
3 Dimes Down
Self-Destructive Zones
(and) A Ghost to Most

As someone already said, Cooley fucking owns the new album. Every one of his songs on it is a classic. I went with "3 Dimes Down," but it could have been any of those -- now that I think about it, I probably should have gone with "Cadillac" because that's the song that got me obsessed with the band in the first place.

what is there some kind of Patterson Hood backlash I'm unaware of?

milo z, Monday, 10 March 2008 05:09 (eighteen years ago)

Naw, Hood's the heart and soul and all that. Just not the best writer in the band.

rogermexico., Monday, 10 March 2008 05:28 (eighteen years ago)

Hood always carries the bulk of the load. Just sometimes his songs tend to sound similar. Still, he's got some doozies on the new record. But this one is Cooley's record, the same way that The Dirty South was Hood's.

"Perfect Timing"!

Anakin Ska Walker (AKA Skarth Vader) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 12 September 2011 22:22 (fourteen years ago)

Cooley's songs on Go Go Boots weren't up to his usual standards, but Birthday Boy from The Big To Do is an alltime great.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 12 September 2011 22:48 (fourteen years ago)

that guitar line (that i figure Hood plays?) after the third verse on Zip City! gives me goosebumps every time.
