The World's Mellowest Superstar

Future_Perfect, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

Is Jack Johnson really a superstar? Based on what?

I must be more out-of-touch with the mainstream than I thought.

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 5 March 2008 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

When I was in Australia three years ago he was HUGE there, you couldn't avoid him. It was the first time I'd heard of him though.

chap, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

he just spent 3 weeks at the top of the U.S. album charts, and is headlining roughly half of the big festivals this summer.

I read that interview with Jack Johnson the other night, and try as I might I really couldn't hate him as a person as much as I hate his music. I expected his "I'm a mellow surfer dude" schtick to annoy me to no end, but he really comes across as a pretty genuinely down-to-earth dude. Almost made me wish his music wasn't so infuriatingly boring.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

some of my best friends would probably make terribly boring records if given the chance, it's not really a good reflection on someone's character.

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

Right, but I expected his whole persona to annoy me, but he comes off pretty likeable.

so does john mayer (xp). I wish these guys made more interesting music! actually I don't, and don't care.

akm, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

Jack Johnson is even on the Clay Aiken cover too!

musically, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think I've ever heard a Jack Johnson song. Or an original Clay Aiken song for that matter. I'm neither happy nor sad about this.

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 5 March 2008 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

ew, that bit of exposed pube hair on the aiken cover

Jack Johnson's face is inherently laceratable, isn't it.

Eazy, Friday, 7 March 2008 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

There's a black Jack Johnson, but it ain't this guy.

The Fall-Out Boy cover has been made into a poster that you can buy specifically to decorate your walls. Somebody saw this as a money-maker.

(multiple x-posts - got sucked into the Rolling Stone poster madness that img is hotlinked from)

the sad thing is that the date of the issue is over a month after the movie's theatrical release, which given RS's shorter biweekly lead times, means that probably isn't true. I actually owned that issue at one point, I think it was at the tail end of the last time I was dumb enough to have a subscription.

Alex in Baltimore, Sunday, 9 March 2008 22:17 (eighteen years ago)

for one o_O second I thought the Blind Melon one said "RIP & READY"
