Not that I have a problem making up my mind, as "God Only Knows" is one of my all-time favourite songs. But there are an incredible lot of strong ones here: "Good Vibrations", "Sunny Afternoon", "Reach Out I'll Be There", "Paperback Writer", "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore", "Day Tripper"/"We Can Work It Out", "Out Of Time", "I'm a Boy", "Paint It, Black", "Daydream", "Monday Monday", "Semi Detached Suburban Mr. James". And also "Eleanor Rigby" although the presence of "Yellow Submarine" means I would have refused to vote for it anyways.

1967 and 1968 may have been better album years, but 1966 was obviously one of the best years ever for singles.

Had to go with Good Vibrations.
Paint It Black was close.

Good Vibrations.

Sometimes being boring is being right.

February Callendar, Thursday, 6 March 2008 02:18 (seventeen years ago)

Good Vibrations is the right answer.

River Deep Mountain High because it simultaneously sounds like the end of everything and the beginning of everything else.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 6 March 2008 09:30 (seventeen years ago)

So many classics here, bookended by the year's prime examples of maudlin, self-pitying echt-C&W. I blame West Central Scotland.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 6 March 2008 09:31 (seventeen years ago)

I forgot "River Deep Mountain High" and the two Hollies songs when I listed all the great songs.

Really, other than the 1981 list, I think this is the strongest Top 50 I've polled so far.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 6 March 2008 11:17 (seventeen years ago)

Good year, there's many here I'd happily vote for. Ended up giving Reach Out (I'll Be There) some love.

Goodness, what an embarrassment of riches. It's "God Only Knows" for me.

mike t-diva, Thursday, 6 March 2008 11:53 (seventeen years ago)

Gotta go with "I'm A Boy." But jeez, so many unbelievably brilliant records here.

Sara Sara Sara, Thursday, 6 March 2008 14:25 (seventeen years ago)

All or Nothing.

Mark G, Thursday, 6 March 2008 14:28 (seventeen years ago)

So hard to go against "Eleanor Rigby" & "Sloop John B" but i've always been partial to "Sunny Afternoon". It doesn't get much better than "I've got a big fat mama tryin' to break meeeee"

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Says something about the quality of the list when "Paperback Writer" gets 0.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 01:24 (seventeen years ago)

Says something about the quality of the voters when "Distant Drums" gets 2.

Gene Pitney Nobody Needs Your Love 1

Nobody remembers this song more like! (Including me)

Mark G, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 09:38 (seventeen years ago)

I fully expect Ken Dodd to win the 1965 poll.

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 09:49 (seventeen years ago)

I remember "Nobody Needs Your Love (More Than I Do)" very well indeed. Written by Randy Newman.

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 10:30 (seventeen years ago)

I guessed that would be the subtitle.

Otherwise it'd be "Nobody Needs Your Love (so nick off!)"

Mark G, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 11:21 (seventeen years ago)

This and "I'm Gonna Be Strong" were his two biggest UK hits, both reaching #2. He didn't get to number one here until the Marc Almond duet.

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 11:23 (seventeen years ago)

"two biggest UK hits of the sixties" that should have read.
