I'm torn between "Transition" and "Evolution." "Ascension" definitely has its moments, but it doesn't hold together too well as a composition.

"stellar regions", despite not actually being called that, is absolutely beautiful and one of my favorite ways to get people interested in late-john/early-alice spiritual-seeker stuff

I'm voting for Stellar Regions because it is -ions and also is pretty good.

Elvin Jones' cymbal on this thing is bonkers!

I can't decide between 'Love Action' and '(Keep Feeling) Fascination.' Where's my sudafed. I JUST HEARD NOT MORE THAN 2 HRS AGO 'A Love Supreme (Resolution) on WRTI here in Philadelphia. I'm going with 'crystal blue persuasion.'

eighteen years pass...

Reggie Workman has been teaching at the New School since 1987 (40 years next year, when he also turns 90!), and I always see him post about his students' shows. I've never gone before but today I finally made an exception - it was apparently an annual thing called the John Coltrane Repertory Ensemble and it was my first time seeing how the New School's music program was set up. The auditorium they used was really a recording studio, complete with the recording booth, and it was a flat floor with rows of chairs facing a stage. Workman was there and he looked pretty great and healthy, much better than a lot of senior citizens I know who are much younger. Again, all students who are likely still learning, but the pianist, one or possibly both drummers and the flautist/baritone saxophonist came off as especially promising. I'd say the highlight was a baritone sax solo done for "Resolution" from A Love Supreme - the instrumentation by design did not match the original recordings, Workman's intro made it clear this music was meant to be re-imagined and re-interpreted. Pretty cool way to end the school season and pretty mind-blowing if you're learning Coltrane through a former collaborator like Reggie Workman. I kind of wonder if any students found that intimidating, especially if you're playing the bass or maybe tenor sax.
