Yeah, he got it right on this one.

Mark G, Friday, 7 March 2008 12:45 (seventeen years ago)

At first I thought "sure, this whole album is probably really nice still, as long as no-one's there to see you listening to it," but then I watched the video and it turned itself into a dud.

It's alright. He should never sing, though.

On "Southside", he sounds like Zilly off "Dast and Mut & their flying machines"

i think i was drunk when i started this and i don't think i'd feel strongly about this song either way if i wasn't drunk, but obv it's classic. i even like the singing.

jabba hands, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 01:26 (seventeen years ago)

yeah he's wise to overlay it w/vocoder

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 01:28 (seventeen years ago)

he'd be wise to overlay his face with a hammer the little twerp

you see i dont get the hate.
i am anything but a fan of his music (though i like it off Hotel is absolutely wonderful).
However, he was on Never Mind the Buzzcocks recently, and i cant deny he had a certain self depracating charm and well mannered humour about him.

I love the brazen simplicity of Play, especially the singles (and ESPECIALLY "Honey" and this song).

I don't really get all the Moby hate... Okay, the last few records may have not been that interesting, but whenever I read or see his interviews, he seems like one of the most decent, thoughtful, non-self-centred pop stars on the planet. Maybe that's the problem though - he's too sincere for our postmodernly ironic time. Anyway, the stuff he did in 1991-98 (up and including Play) gets him my respect, no matter what he's done after that.

Tuomas, Thursday, 13 March 2008 07:33 (seventeen years ago)

Early Underground has some fantastic tracks on it. The Play B-sides comp is pretty good too (esp. "Sunday" and "Whispering Wind")

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 13 March 2008 07:35 (seventeen years ago)

"Hymn (This is My Dream)" exemplifies everything good about Moby's approach to music:

Unfortunately everything that's bad about his approach makes 90% of his musical output total shit.

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 13 March 2008 07:38 (seventeen years ago)

His videos always make me cringe (cf. mackin at 2 minutes into that video) but it does kind of make me wonder why more artists don't put such soul-bearing personal visual imagery into their music videos.

I don't know why I like talking about Moby, I don't like him that much, he's just such an unlikely pop star.
