Lords of the New Church beat them to Like A Virgin.
Cue Comedians-style sidesplitting gags re. what they're going to cover her with &c.
― Dingbod Kesterson, Friday, 7 March 2008 14:29 (seventeen years ago)
oh I hope it's "Borderline"! or at least "Beautiful Stranger."
I can imagine both of those Stooged up pretty easily, actually.

"sidesplitting gags re. what they're going to cover her with"
That's probably Iggy's song intro . .

can they retract your HOF induction if you botch the ceremony performance?

Mike Watt is a Stooge = no surprise here!
― Three Word Username, Friday, 7 March 2008 19:11 (seventeen years ago)
"can they retract your HOF induction if you botch the ceremony performance?"
I wish. Seriously, it would be the crowning moment of the Stooges career, if they could pull off another metallic KO and get thrown out of their own retirement ceremony.
― Soukesian, Friday, 7 March 2008 20:18 (seventeen years ago)
I don't think they are being inducted.

Should Madonna be inducted to Rock and Roll Hall?
… Yet "if you think of rock 'n' roll, Madonna is not the first name that comes to mind," said Steve Morse, longtime Boston Globe music critic who was a member of the hall of fame's nominating committee for seven years. He considers her selection, particularly in her first year of eligibility, an embarrassment. Her music was never played on rock 'n' roll radio, he said. Some veteran rock artists like Deep Purple, the J. Geils Band, Steve Miller and Alice Cooper are still waiting for induction. Morse long and unsuccessfully argued on behalf of the late Gram Parsons.

What a fucking turd.

The 5 that made it:
Madonna Leonard Cohen John Mellencamp The Dave Clark Five The Ventures
The nominees they snubbed:
Afrika Bambaataa Beastie Boys Chic Donna Summer
It's close enough to rockism in my book.
― Eric H., Monday, 10 March 2008 16:20 (seventeen years ago)
It's probably time for the HOF to reconsider its name so that people won't get unduly twisted over pop, R&B, and hip-hop acts making it in.
― Joseph McCombs, Monday, 10 March 2008 16:25 (seventeen years ago)
And reconsider their roster of voters.

Yeah, if Madonna didn't go into the RRHOF, where would she go? There's no TOP40POPHOF ffs. To deny that Madonna has been one of the biggest names in popular music for the last 25 years is just brazen stupidity.

― Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 15:33 (seventeen years ago)
Madonna totally should be in the Hall.
Nope, it was Iggy singing lead. I kinda liked that they did Ray of Light, nu-Madonna, not just all classics.
― M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 15:37 (seventeen years ago)
Well, it is the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame.
― Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 15:40 (seventeen years ago)
But Madonna asking the Stooges to perform her songs in protest of their continued snubbing is most excellent as far as I'm concerned.
― Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 15:41 (seventeen years ago)
But is it like the football hall of fame where you continue to be eligible until you get the votes? or is it just one year?
I mean there's dudes like Paul Krause that take forever but they get there but they eventually do...Chic might be the Paul Krause of music.
― M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 15:43 (seventeen years ago)
Krause got in through the Old-Timers committee (I don't remember the official name). Madonna is like the Phil Rizzutto of the whole thing-no way she deserves to get any honor associated with ROCK.
The whole hall of fame thing is stupid.
― Bill Magill, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 15:45 (seventeen years ago)
the whole ceremony is fucking loooooooooooooooooooooong jesus i missed half the stooges cuz i got bored and switched over to MTV jams.
but their definition of "rock n' roll" is broad, it's already not just rock. there's old school doo wop and even some hip hop in now, probably some jazz dudes maybe? anyway, it's a popular music hall, she should be in.

Then he closed by quoting some of "Like A Virgin."
Best part was after the set, the camera tracked them walking backstage and showed Iggy introducing Madonna to the band. She said to Steve Mackay, "I liked the horns." Mike Watt held his bass up in front of him like a soldier with a rifle standing at attention, then slowly bowed to her. So surreal, so classic.
― dad a, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 16:27 (seventeen years ago)

― If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 17:02 (seventeen years ago)
it was certainly finer than the moment that was the weirdness
― Edward III, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 17:30 (seventeen years ago)
My girlfriend and I happened to see this on TV (I didn't know about it), and it was the most hilariously awful thing I've ever seen in my life. I couldn't stop cracking up. Iggy is a disaster now, and the Stooges look like they should be playing inside their caskets. The best part was trying to see him do a 'hip' roll onto the stage from the floor like in the old days -- it turned out to be a three-step, 5-second process. Horribly embarrassing.
Note: I consider the Stooges to be my favorite band of all time.
― Reatards Unite, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 21:05 (seventeen years ago)
Madonna is like the Phil Rizzutto of the whole thing-no way she deserves to get any honor associated with ROCK.
This is moronic. The case against Rizzuto is that he got in the HOF because he played on championship Yankees teams despite not putting up the same numbers as his teammates. But you can't argue that Madonna didn't put up the numbers (12 #1 hits, 36 top 10 hits) unless you're working with a really narrow definition of rock that excludes the music Madonna made altogether.
― jaymc, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 21:28 (seventeen years ago)
watching it again on youtube this was pretty fun...steve mckay really makes the songs for me....
― M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 21:30 (seventeen years ago)
I mean, people use the term "rock critic" all the time, but everyone knows that "rock" in that context really just means "popular music" (pretty much anything but jazz and classical). Do you really think the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame was founded on the premise of only celebrating musicians that used guitars? I always imagined that its parameters were defined based on musicians you'd typically see on MTV or in Rolling Stone.
― jaymc, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 21:33 (seventeen years ago)

"But you can't argue that Madonna didn't put up the numbers (12 #1 hits, 36 top 10 hits) unless you're working with a really narrow definition of rock that excludes the music Madonna made altogether."
I don't consider it rock. Shoot me. I don't think Rizzuto belongs in either.
I really have no dog in this fight, because I hate the RNR HOF and pretty much all it stands for, so I don't give a fuck who they let in. Any institution that honors a guy like Billy Joel is pretty much dead to me.
