Bobby who OD'd on Drano is pretty funny, but I guess I've gotta vote for Brian here.

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 8 March 2008 11:55 (seventeen years ago)

It's the bikers/bikers rhyme that does it.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Saturday, 8 March 2008 12:01 (seventeen years ago)

Gotta be Bobby OD'd on Drano. I know it's horribly tasteless, but I love the notion of "OVERdosing" on Drano (as if there's a dosage that would be okay).

I played this on my college radio back station in 1986 in Central Ohio and actually got complaint calls. People suck.

DIED

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 8 March 2008 18:59 (seventeen years ago)

I went for "Herbie pushed Tony from the Boy's Club roof", but really for the bit that goes "Tony couldn't fly, Tony DIED".

emil.y, Saturday, 8 March 2008 20:13 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, that's the best bit.

I only left it out for the sake of brevity, so feel free to use it as a reason for your vote.

Bikers. This whole album is v. quotable.

His was the first real show I went to, at the time of this recording

Dr Morbius, Monday, 10 March 2008 15:17 (seventeen years ago)

the first two songs that come to mind when I think of "People Who Died" are Detention's "Dead Rock n Rollers" (which directly addresses Mr. Carroll, xpost Colonel Poo) and Altered Images "Dead Pop Stars" (just because of the subject matter).

zaxxon25, Monday, 10 March 2008 16:04 (seventeen years ago)

I voted for Mary; is that line supposed to be about Andrea Feldman?

Joseph McCombs, Monday, 10 March 2008 16:29 (seventeen years ago)

the first two songs that come to mind when I think of "People Who Died"

...were always "88 Lines About 44 Women" and "Walk On The Wild Side".

I'll have to go with poor little Cathy, because it's just over-the-top enough (11 years old!) to be fairly ludicrous and blackly funny. (Of course, a similar real-life occurrence would be too horrible to contemplate.)

Also, that bit about Sly in Vietnam makes me think of "Rambo".

Myonga Vรถn Bontee, Monday, 10 March 2008 17:08 (seventeen years ago)

Detention >>>>> Jim Carroll, but I do like this song (and the album it's on).

Ya know, I'd been mishearing the lyrics to the chorus for over 15 years now.

I thought it was "All the people who died, died." Like he was just stating it real matter-of-fact, as in: "What happened to the people who died, you ask? All the people who died, DIED!"

I like my version better. Fuck you internet, and all your fucking lyrics sites.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Friday, 14 March 2008 01:02 (seventeen years ago)

I like the sweet-voiced backup singers who sing, "DIED! DIED!"

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 30 March 2008 19:45 (seventeen years ago)

He borrowed the idea for this song (and the title) from a poem by his buddy Ted Berrigan.

It's kinda dumb but my reaction was: "No, Jim can't die." Just seems one of those guys who'll always be around. Fuck.

Nathalie (stevienixed), Monday, 14 September 2009 10:51 (fifteen years ago)

i've pretty much loved "People Who Died" & "Catholic Boy" since the first time i heard them, but he's one of those guys i always meant to explore further but never got around to. anyone have any suggestions?

myndbloom, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 00:16 (fifteen years ago)

man i never really listened to the lyrics to 'livin on a prayer' before. depressing.

What are the benefits of dating a younger guy, better erections? (darraghmac), Thursday, 17 September 2009 10:22 (fifteen years ago)

It always struck me that "People Who Died" cast the Jim Carroll Band as a "one-hit-wonder," but there are so many great songs on Catholic Boy (my favorite being "Three Sisters") that it's a shame. Later on, they did a sorta needless-but-respectable cover of "Sweet Jane" as I remember.

re: "Sweet Jane"... he's name-checked in the song, so I guess he would have gotten a lot of requests for it.

Maltodextrin, Saturday, 19 September 2009 04:58 (fifteen years ago)

He's "Jim" in "Sweet Jane"? Never heard that. Thought his VU moment was on Max'x KC.

Mark, Saturday, 19 September 2009 16:15 (fifteen years ago)

He's also name-checked in the excellent Blue Oyster Cult song "In Thee"...
