I've experienced this three times:
1. Stay - Shakespear's Sister
2. Beetlebum - Blur
3. Mercy - Duffy (last night, in fact).

And you?

"Cult of Personality" by Living Colour, although I have no recollection if it actually was a "number one," but it was certainly inescapable at the time.

Not sure if it was No 1 at the time or if it was shortly to get there, but I saw the Black Eyed Peas do Where Is the Love on TOTP. First time I'd heard it, too.

I tend to avoid concerts in huge venues where the ticket price is over $50, so the answer is zero.

3. Mercy - Duffy (last night, in fact).

I have no idea who or what Duffy is. This is how much attention I pay to the charts now.

"What's It Gonna Be" is great, though.

Do the indie charts count? (Do they still exist?)

The Jam, twice.

"Town Called Malice" (and "Precious") - Hammersmith Odeon, 27 Feb '82.
"Beat Surrender" - Brighton Conference Centre, 11 Dec '82.

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 10 March 2008 10:14 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I was at Wembley for "Beat Surrender", thinkin' 'bout it.

I'm pretty sure I saw Cornershop in Liverpool the same week Brimful of Asha was number 1, but can't find any evidence online to back it up.

(it was number 1 on the 28th of Feb according to theofficialcharts.com, and they played in Manchester on the 20th, so it's more likely that I didn't, after all.) useful post.

Smells Like Teen Spirit, November 1991

StanM, Monday, 10 March 2008 10:45 (seventeen years ago)

Wasn't a number one.

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 10 March 2008 11:01 (seventeen years ago)

So many I keep thinking OH what about, but then I think:

1) No it had *just* been or was going to be, or

2) No, I was watching the TV actually.

Mark G, Monday, 10 March 2008 11:04 (seventeen years ago)

It was over here (xpost)

StanM, Monday, 10 March 2008 11:10 (seventeen years ago)

oh wait - maybe it wasn't (this archive I just found says it was LA Style - James Brown Is Dead) :-/

StanM, Monday, 10 March 2008 11:12 (seventeen years ago)

I thought I had a fourth in "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick" - but alas, I was couple of weeks too early.
