recently released a new album on rise above records... worshipped by many stoner fans who crave a return to kyuss style slow riffery... what do you dudes reckon? pass the joint...

dog latin, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic. Way better than Kyuss. Less concerned with "sun-blasted desert sonicscapes" or whatever and more about, like, cool album covers. And names. "Come My Fanatics..." is one of my fave albums titles ever. And they rock with vigor where Kyuss rocked kind of lazily.

adam, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Little early in the game to say either "classic" or "dud" for these boys, isn't it? Pretty good, though. I like High on Fire better but admittedly the slow aspect is missing there.

John Darnielle, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

suuuupercooooveeeennn.... classic so far. i actually found "dopethrone" to be a little underwhelming compared to "supercoven" and the earlier stuff, but still great. kinda wish they could get the vocals a little more well sorted.

your null fame, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Come My Fanatics' is still my favorite. The new one makes the psych connection more explicit, it's like if the Walkingseeds were all three-hundred-pound mental patients with bolts in their head staggering about on Prolixin. More about this one later I promise

dave q, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This is, as far as I know, the only English rock band (can this be true?). I haven't heard too much of the new one but what I have heard seems to go past the brutal misanthropy of Dopethrone into full-on space rock territory in places, which is actually kind of disappointing to me. But they still rule, dude. I saw this freaky Nazi Lowrider the other day with an Electric Wizard t-shirt walking around Berkeley, I was gonna complement him on the shirt but then I thought maybe I shouldn't bother this guy.

Kris, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, Kyuss was fast more than slow, weren't they? I only have Welcome to Sky Valley, and it's pretty rollicking.

Kris, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Kris - I was going to mention Medulla Nocte and Iron Monkey - then I remembered that they both broke up last year - I fear you are correct

dave q, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is Orange Goblin still around?

Kris, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They suck(ed), BTW.

Kris, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Orange Goblin is still around, they just released a 'drastic change of direction' album, apparently they no longer wish be 'stoner' or whatever - haven't heard it

dave q, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think High On Fire broke up last week, by email no less. That's the easiest way to break up the band these days, I guess.

Andy, Monday, 6 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That sucks -- I was actually going to see them two weeks ago, but then Godflesh (who were headlining) cancelled the entire tour before even making it to the States, and then Justin quit Godflesh. Maybe this condition is catching!

Ned Raggett, Monday, 6 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
Ayone know if Electric Wizard have split?
On one of the EW fan sites it says " After ten years with Electric Wizard, Mark Greening (drums and piano) and Tim Bagshaw (bass) quit the band to form Ramesses"

Moon, Friday, 16 January 2004 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

The following, from the website of their US label, The Music Cartel:

>Electric Wizard are now ready to officially unveil a new line up & announce news of their forthcoming Fifth album. Following the departure of former drummer Mark Greening (drums), the band recruited the punishing skills of former Iron Monkey drummer Justin Greaves to fill the position behind the kit. Following these excursions, bassist Tim decided that he no longer wanted to play bass and decided to leave, forming a new band with the recently departed Greening. Deciding to refrain media attention until a stable line up was in place, founder member Jus Oborn decided to recruit the services of a second guitarist, Liz Buckingham, who had previously played with legendary cult all girl New York Doom/Crust band 13 and more recently with Southern Lord recording artists Sourvein. Filling in the bass position is friend of the band Rob Al-Issa. The band recently re-entered Chuckalumba in Dorset to lay down Seven new earth shattering tracks for the forthcoming album - ‘We Live’ – quite an apt title, all things considered. Leader Oborn is in the process of relocating to the States, where the album is scheduled to be mixed with legendary noise meister Billy Anderson. Some titles to be included are: "Living Dead at Manchester Morgue", "Saturns Children" & the enigmatic "Eko Eko Azarak" amongst others. ‘We Live’ is scheduled for in January 2004.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Friday, 16 January 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you Phil thats good news. Don't suppose you have heard Ramesses?
Only Ramases I can find out about is an old progressive rock band.

Moon, Friday, 16 January 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, that ramases is pretty cool. i can't wait to hear the liz-augmented e-wiz, it should be outstanding.

...and I have mp3s of the new album referred to there. And so far I'm liking it a hell of a lot.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

oohhh. How does it compare to 'Dopethrone' and 'Let us Prey' ? The only 2 albums i've heard by Electric Wizard.

Rock Bastard, Tuesday, 15 June 2004 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked it better than Dopethrone, I can say that much -- I felt that was good and all, but this one actually caught my interest from the start.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 04:25 (twenty-one years ago)

classic!!

i like dopethrone quite a bit, especially the title track, "i, witchfinder" and especially "vinum sabbathi"!! so i'm a bit surprised by your comment ned - tho i agree "funeralopolis" is a bit of a snore, and the "weird tales" suite that follows takes a while to warm up.

excited to hear the new one sounds good! what's the new direction of electric wizard??

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow it must be really good then as Dopethrone is generally accepted as their highpoint.
Must get this album now.
Funeralopolis is the best track on Dopethrone!!!

Rock Bastard, Tuesday, 15 June 2004 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Found one track off the album . Its the track 'we live' Sounds pretty good to my ears. Looking forward to hearing the rest. Going to order it from Amazon now.

Rock Bastard, Tuesday, 15 June 2004 07:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm looking forward to hearing this. It'll be hard for them to beat the power of Dopethrone though. Wasn't so keen on Let Us Prey.

Thursday 28th April Glasgow - Cathouse
Friday 29th April Birmingham - Jug of Ale (+ Mistress)
Saturday 30th April London - The Garage
Sunday 1st May Bristol - Fiddlers (+Gonga)

Who are Capricorns?
And are EW worth going to see live? Has anyone ever seen them live?

Robbie M, Friday, 15 April 2005 09:16 (twenty years ago)

What did everyone think of We Live? I thought it was a bit boring aside from a couple of moments. They're taking themselves too seriously now imho.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 15 April 2005 09:43 (twenty years ago)

I've got the Capricorns mini-album, the title of which escapes me. They're a very nearly 100% instrumental doomy/ stoner-y/ vaguely Isis-y 'supergroup' with former members of Iron Monkey and Orange Goblin.
The record's rather good, by the way!

M Carty (mj_c), Friday, 15 April 2005 12:43 (twenty years ago)

I hope they're better than Orange Goblin!

Robbie M, Friday, 15 April 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

New album rules! Might be the best yet.

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 21 October 2007 18:29 (eighteen years ago)

really? i'd kind of given up on these.

the next grozart, Sunday, 21 October 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

Well you shouldn't. This album is a bit more like Dopethrone mixed with the self-titled and it utterly kills.

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 21 October 2007 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

i dont like it much :/

chaki, Sunday, 21 October 2007 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

I really like the recent Weedeater album. It's very similar to Dopethrone.

"We Live" was horrible. Endlessly boring, and the singer sounds like Liam Gallagher of all people on it.

'funeralopolis' is not just a fantastic song, but pretty much the benchmark for the genre.

Charlie Howard, Monday, 10 March 2008 08:56 (seventeen years ago)

awesome song

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 10 March 2008 08:58 (seventeen years ago)

I wish they would tour the new album soon.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 15:47 (seventeen years ago)

Who else loves the new album?

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 20 March 2008 01:38 (seventeen years ago)

i haven't heard it yet, i feel kind of bad about that. i love (LOVE) the come my fanatics-supercoven period, i just haven't checked out the last two. which is stupid because i loved liz in 13. sourvein, too. so i should really get on it instead of just bumpin' threads about it.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 20 March 2008 04:15 (seventeen years ago)

New album sounds kinda dumb.

S-, Thursday, 20 March 2008 06:43 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah it's totally nincompoopy

W4LTER, Thursday, 20 March 2008 07:05 (seventeen years ago)

New album is almost, but not quite, the equal of Dopethrone. Totally different, but the second guitarist/organist really allows them to open up and explore some different sonics.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 20 March 2008 11:51 (seventeen years ago)

this probably falls into the category of ed's bizarro opinions, but I prefer the original release of dopethrone over the remastered one. it sounds weird to talk about the subtleties of knuckledragging doomrock, but the album's appeal is tied to its sonic impact, and the remaster tames the original's unruly bass frequencies ever so slightly. probably not enough to bug anybody else, but enough to lessen my enjoyment of the album.

and anybody who doesn't get the appeal of dopethrone is probably listening to it through their fucking ipod earbuds instead of through massive speakers set on stun.

Edward III, Thursday, 20 March 2008 14:21 (seventeen years ago)

another thing about the remastered dopethrone,(which is the one i've got as well as the only one i've heard, i still love it) -- the title track is cut in half to make room for the bonus track at the end. kind of a bummer, especially since 'dopethrone's one of the best tunes on there.

Mark Clemente, Thursday, 20 March 2008 14:24 (seventeen years ago)

you know what i love, when it comes to production? that you can hear the amplifiers rattling the wires on the snare drum when the drummer's not playing. so fucking LOUD.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 20 March 2008 14:55 (seventeen years ago)

(that statement specifically regarding "come my fanatics")

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 20 March 2008 14:55 (seventeen years ago)

I dont think the vinyl reissues were remastered, just the cds.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 21 March 2008 23:32 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I asked around and the vinyl wasn't remastered. I was pretty sure Lee said that at the time they went on sale.

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 22 March 2008 00:54 (seventeen years ago)

I had no idea there was a difference between versions of Dopethrone. I have the remaster I think. I guess I should try and download an original version and see what the difference is.

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 22 March 2008 01:04 (seventeen years ago)

My cds are the originals. Vinyls mostly are the new ones.

I spin the first s/t album at my Dj night all the time. It might secretly be their best album.

Could get behind this.

Dunno if Soukesian reads this thread, but I had Dopethrone on for the first time in ages and was struck by how much one of the sections in Weird Tales sounds like Goat Science. You'll know which bit I mean when you hear it.

I thought I could make it work because you look a bit like a man (aldo), Saturday, 19 September 2009 11:06 (sixteen years ago)

Have the CD, but I'm afraid it somehow never really clicked for me. I'll dig it out, stick Weird Tales on and let you know what I think.

Soukesian, Saturday, 19 September 2009 11:11 (sixteen years ago)

That'll be the bit with the ragged vocals then? No, definitely some familiar-sounding grooves in there!

Yeah, I've heard it; wrote about it here.

that's not funny. (unperson), Wednesday, 24 November 2010 02:39 (fifteen years ago)

One of my albums of the year. It's got some lighter, almost poppy moments on it (it's all relative right?). I reckon it's also the most psychedelic record they've done. Just killer riffs all the way through it. The last track is like a thunder storm!

The only things wrong with it are the poor art and the puns in the song titles...

I woke up this morning singing "Black mass! Black mass! Help me Lucifer!" Which was nice.

Carl Jung Jeezy (Doran), Wednesday, 24 November 2010 11:03 (fifteen years ago)

This band has been on the decline for me since Dopethrone. I was ready to give up after hearing We Live (which sounded like Liam Gallagher had joined the band). I heard Witchcult Today was supposed to be good, but never got round to giving it a proper listen. Is this a "return to form" then?

The Great Cool Lulu who sleeps in Riley... (dog latin), Wednesday, 24 November 2010 11:20 (fifteen years ago)

No. I'm a really big fan and think that 1, they never really went that bad and 2, if there is anything approaching a 'return to form' then it is 'Witchcult Today'. And as Unperson rightly says in his review, Dopethrone's not the be all and end all. Whatabout Supercoven, Come My Fanatics etc?

Carl Jung Jeezy (Doran), Wednesday, 24 November 2010 11:27 (fifteen years ago)

I love everything leading up to Dopethrone and I have time for Let Us Prey (although not as good). Am I right in thinking they had a line-up change before We Live?

The Great Cool Lulu who sleeps in Riley... (dog latin), Wednesday, 24 November 2010 12:01 (fifteen years ago)

...only the vocals on that album sucked. And it felt like a retread of old material. I'll def check out Black Masses and Witchcult Today.

The Great Cool Lulu who sleeps in Riley... (dog latin), Wednesday, 24 November 2010 12:02 (fifteen years ago)

Scorpio Curse definitely the highpoint of the new album for me. I'm digging Black Masses but it isn't quite as good as Witchcult Today.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 23 December 2010 02:43 (fourteen years ago)

for my money, witchcult and black masses are roughly equivalent, and anyone who dropped out in the wake of we live and let us prey owes themselves a catch-up (calling dog latin).

once upon a time, i'd have said dopethrone towered above the rest, and it's still what i'd first recommend to the curious, but at this point, i'm most fond of come my fanatics and the last two. want my wizard all gooey and (ponderously) swinging.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 23 September 2014 15:23 (eleven years ago)

i really liked the last one so this one has elevated expectations to meet.

not quite as riffy as i was hoping on first listen but it has an intriguing river-of-sludge quality to it

j., Tuesday, 23 September 2014 15:31 (eleven years ago)

i wonder if maybe this soft-and-muffled-pillows production approach they're sticking with is meant to make it less of a bad trip, so you don't freak out and hurt yourself

The band's name was taken from two Black Sabbath songs: "Electric Funeral" and "The Wizard". Oborn remarked, "Is the name Electric Wizard made out of two Black Sabbath song titles? (smokes a big bud of weed through a can) Hahahaha, yeah it is!"[4]
