Dear Friend,
As you purchased tickets in the past for the Pitchfork Music Festival, we thought you may be interested in learning that this year's festival will take place on Friday, July 18 through Sunday, July 20, 2008. The location remains the same -- Union Park, Chicago, IL -- and the tickets will go on sale this Wednesday, March 12 at noon CDT. There will be a limited number of 2-day and 3-day passes for sale, which are not expected to last long. This year's prices will be:
-$65 for a 3-day pass
-$50 for a Saturday/Sunday 2-day pass
-$30 per for single day
Since you're kind enough to still be reading this email, we figured that it is only fair to give you some "insider information" about the first announced acts for this year's festival in return.
Friday
Pitchfork Music Festival and All Tomorrow's Parties Present: "Don't Look Back" - featuring Public Enemy performing "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back"
Saturday
Animal Collective, !!!, Vampire Weekend, Dizzee Rascal, No Age, Atlas Sound, Fleet Foxes
Sunday
Spiritualized, M. Ward, Boris, Extra Golden, El Guincho
More to be announced soon! We hope to see you there, and if you think your friends might be interested in this event, feel free to forward on this message.

i think they'd be hard-pressed to top the lineup for their v. atp thing but this looks cool enough
― J0rdan S., Monday, 10 March 2008 20:31 (seventeen years ago)
I can miss Public Enemy altogether. Yes I can.
― kenan, Monday, 10 March 2008 20:48 (seventeen years ago)
What, no John Jackson or Hadioread??
― The Macallan 18 Year, Monday, 10 March 2008 21:04 (seventeen years ago)
Saturday is shaping up nicely, but Boris is the only band on either of the other two days I would care to see.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 10 March 2008 21:08 (seventeen years ago)
Boris, AniCo and Spiritualized aside...I'll pass, thanks.
― stephen, Monday, 10 March 2008 22:07 (seventeen years ago)
anyone else going this year?
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 27 May 2008 00:21 (seventeen years ago)
I'm going three days and my wife will be going on and off sat. sun. - Honestly she's got the right idea - there's a lot of wandering to be done between sets I think. I'm stoked for all of 'All Tmrw's Parties' night, and AniCo, Hold Steady, !!!, Dizee Rascal, No Age, Atlas Sound and Fuck Buttons - and holding my wife's hand to help her pray for Pulp songs during Jarvis Cocker's performance - otherwise - eh' for Sat. - drink some barley pops I guess. Sunday is get high day - D Jr., Spiritualized, Les Savy Fav, Ghostface, Boris (!!!!), Dodos, King Khan, Mahjongg - righteous! Work is gonna suck the next day.
― BlackIronPrison, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 02:55 (seventeen years ago)

I'll be there!
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 14:53 (seventeen years ago)
Either this or Lolla. I haven't decided yet. Both are pretty nice this year.
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 15:22 (seventeen years ago)
Help me decide, ILX!
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 15:30 (seventeen years ago)
Pitchfork. I hear the hot dogs are NOT TO BE MISSED.
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 15:38 (seventeen years ago)
this. cheaper, everyone says it's better run etc. etc.
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 27 May 2008 17:45 (seventeen years ago)
plus whiney i thought you were like the biggest public enemy dude ever
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 27 May 2008 17:46 (seventeen years ago)
missed it last year, but i'll be there this year.
that enough for you, weingarten? ;-)
― marc h., Tuesday, 27 May 2008 17:50 (seventeen years ago)
I'll be there -- prob. not for Friday, though.
― jaymc, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 17:58 (seventeen years ago)
yeah i'm there sat. and sun. only
― n/a, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 17:59 (seventeen years ago)
Going all three days...
― Bill in Chicago, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 18:00 (seventeen years ago)
I flew to see the Public Enemy Don't Look Back in London--where PE fans are crazy rowdy (and where the actual live samples on the record are from!)--and I can't imagine this show is going to be better than that.
I'm just saying: Radiohead, Kanye, RATM, NIN--I can't see those bands every day. The Pfork indie rock crop is super easy to see in NYC at any given time. BUT Pfork will be more laid back and full of all my buddies.
So it's actually kind of a hard decision for me.
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 19:17 (seventeen years ago)
Both lineups are great!
Last year's pfork was run about as well as I can imagine a big outdoor fest being run.
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 19:20 (seventeen years ago)
come to Roskilde, you can see Radiohead and you won't even have to see Kanye
― marc h., Tuesday, 27 May 2008 20:17 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, I wanna go there! Jay-Z and Slayer! Also = $!
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 20:20 (seventeen years ago)
I guess I'll be there too. I hope to actually see bands this year instead of hiding in the shade eating free chipotle burritos. Curious about El Guincho and super-psyched about Apples in Stereo!!! Also, whoa, Elf Power?
― phil-two, Monday, 9 June 2008 08:12 (seventeen years ago)
Lollapalooza involves roughly a thousand times more walking than pitchfork, Whiney, if you have any strong opinions on walking.
― mh, Monday, 9 June 2008 15:12 (seventeen years ago)
Are you assuming that because I write about rock bands, that I'm an immobile fatass?
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 9 June 2008 15:19 (seventeen years ago)
I love walking!
j/k I'll bring my Rascal
Man, I wish I was going to this this year. Alas, Chicago is more than a bus ride away now, and I do not have the money for tickets, a place to stay, and transportation. Last year was, as everyone is saying, run really well. They gave out free bottles of water to people who were sticking near the front of the stages, which I thought was really cool! Oh yeah, the bands were pretty great too.
― jonathan - stl, Monday, 9 June 2008 15:52 (seventeen years ago)
Except for GZA. He just did not want to be there.
any fun afterparties yet? im guessing modular will do one, but on the saturday there is a throne of blood party at sonotheque with mattie from the rapture, james fucking friedman, and dances with white girls.. should be good!
last year that loft party w/ deerhunter & dan deacon was redonkulous. and getting 4am cheese fries and pizza puffs afterwards was even better.
― phil-two, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 17:12 (sixteen years ago)
I'd like to see Extra Golden, but not enough to deal with all the rest of the B.S.
― Granny Dainger, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 17:32 (sixteen years ago)
if theres one of those hipster loft parties somewhere on milwaukee ave that has like 300 ppl and bad local hipster rappers spinning juke remixes of duffel bag boy ill probably end up at that
― deej, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 17:38 (sixteen years ago)
(Those of you who have attended previous festivals may remember the Balance Stage as the "third stage," and while acts playing there will still run concurrently with the other two stages, the area within the grounds alloted to this stage has been greatly expanded.)
This is good news.
― jaymc, Friday, 11 July 2008 15:37 (sixteen years ago)
me and some pals are driving up. should be amusing. not the hysterical omgfest it could be. i was pretty pissed to see the atp ny thing after hitching my wagon firmly to this guy. ho vel.
― msp, Saturday, 12 July 2008 01:33 (sixteen years ago)
if anyone's interested in this, me and 2 people need to get rid of our tickets at the last minute:

OMG that Bomb Squad/PE set.
― maciej recognizing trill, Saturday, 19 July 2008 13:52 (sixteen years ago)
Surprisingly awesome. Hilarious when Flav was pushing his tv show and everyone booed. I thought it might be ugly for a sec. Flav, first rule of indie cred: don't cross-market your vh1 reality show.
― Bill in Chicago, Saturday, 19 July 2008 15:03 (sixteen years ago)
I'm not sure that Public Enemy, and especially Flava Flav, has ever aimed for indie cred.
― Reatards Unite, Saturday, 19 July 2008 15:48 (sixteen years ago)
Sorry, irony wasn't conveyed very well.
― Bill in Chicago, Saturday, 19 July 2008 16:17 (sixteen years ago)
ugh rain. maybe ill skip today and just go to party
― phil-two, Saturday, 19 July 2008 18:00 (sixteen years ago)
I'm there RIGHT NOW
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 19 July 2008 18:35 (sixteen years ago)
Vegan ice cream is not to be missed
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 19 July 2008 18:37 (sixteen years ago)
burma - awesome. sebadoh - decent. public enemy - wow. it was like a PE show that devolved into live reality show action.
icy demons ya ya. ruby suns ... let down a bit. can't you guys get some more bandmates? fuck buttons... needed to be louder. atlas sound ... was enjoyable. no age... moshing ya! many good times. animal collective... good god, i think there's like easily 2x more people here than 2 years ago. i keep flashing back to seeing avey tare and panda bear with like 20 people in a dive bar. one of the regular working class drunks was like, "sounds like a dolphin fart!" i suppose it's changed a bit. more lights.
bbq seitan tacos me like. m.
― msp, Sunday, 20 July 2008 04:13 (sixteen years ago)
ay was ilx poster n/a @ p4k today? if so were you wearing a green shirt? pretty sure i saw u @ jay reatard and no age
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 20 July 2008 06:30 (sixteen years ago)
will be looking out 4 whiney g weingarten tomorrow
today i saw
titus andronicus: were okay i guess, their singer is laughably bad live jay reatard: was not impressed, sound better on record fleet foxes: actually translated way better than i thought they would, dudes were kinda dickish i thought but it was way less boring than i anticipated. got a great guitar sound dizzee: immediately dissed fleet foxes ("i heard yall listenin to that shit...fuck that shit") and almost fought the sound guys. otherwise he was pretty great. it was nice to hear some rap. vampire weekend: played whole album i think. all done pretty faithfully and pretty greatly. wished the sun was out but :/ hold steady: good fest band, left halfway through cuz when you've seen one hold steady song live you've seen em all atlas sound: way out in the shade on the C stage, only went to see this to get a good spot for no age/i think the new deerhunter record is good. he was great, real tranquil and hypnotic, if it wasn't all muddy i woulda sat down and zoned out. had one song that was really dancable kinda like high places. surprise highlight imo. no age: brought the place down even in the face of a diva soundcheck and a buncha amp problems. extended outro of "neck escaper" <3. bringing out abe vigoda <3<3 animal collective: 16 minute version of "fireworks" was cool

yes and i'll be there today too, you can say hi if you want
but i might leave after les savy fav b/c i could give a fuck about anyone playing after them
i think the sound was just shitty for jay reatard because he was the first act on that stage and the sound guys were still figuring things out. you could hear the sound changing throughout the set, though they never got the guitar or drums loud enough, which was disappointing
― n/a, Sunday, 20 July 2008 12:57 (sixteen years ago)
best shit from yesterday:
dizzee rascal extra golden atlas sound animal collective
― n/a, Sunday, 20 July 2008 13:00 (sixteen years ago)
no age: brought the place down even in the face of a diva soundcheck
that stage was running behind all day... so you'd show up at the time and wait 15-20 minutes for it to start. enough mic checks to scream.
― msp, Sunday, 20 July 2008 13:44 (sixteen years ago)
Jarvis closing with a cover of "Face It" by Master C & J was awesome.
― maciej recognizing trill, Sunday, 20 July 2008 15:46 (sixteen years ago)
if it wasn't all muddy i woulda sat down and zoned out
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3180/2685539698_82baa5537e.jpg
Atlas Sound would have been even better if I couldn't hear the Hold Steady at the same time.
― drench, Sunday, 20 July 2008 16:04 (sixteen years ago)
umm i don't blame no age for whatever "diva sound check" you dudes are on about, there was like no guitar at all coming through in the first song so it seems like getting that fixed would be the thing to do
― n/a, Sunday, 20 July 2008 16:29 (sixteen years ago)
J0rdan -- I was standing near n/a for Atlas Sound and No Age. Say hi to me, too (or I'll say hi to you, now that I know to look out for you.)
― jaymc, Sunday, 20 July 2008 16:33 (sixteen years ago)
aight if i see you guys today ill say hey
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 20 July 2008 16:46 (sixteen years ago)
I was only in for fri and sat. I'm typing this from the airport! Have fun for me, guys!
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 20 July 2008 18:07 (sixteen years ago)
dizzee: immediately dissed fleet foxes ("i heard yall listenin to that shit...fuck that shit")
finally someone understands, this band SUCKS so bad
― stephen, Sunday, 20 July 2008 22:17 (sixteen years ago)
Wait, so did Cut Copy actually show up last night? If they were held up at the airport at 9:00, I couldn't imagine them actually making it in time to play, but this indicates they did. Man, I wished I'd stuck around.
― jaymc, Monday, 21 July 2008 15:19 (sixteen years ago)
They did! They finally went on around 9:30 and their set was fantastic.
― Mark Rich@rdson, Monday, 21 July 2008 15:21 (sixteen years ago)
best shit from sunday:
les savy fav, duh times new viking dirty projectors (still kinda cold towards this band but technically what they were doing was pretty impressive)
― n/a, Monday, 21 July 2008 15:26 (sixteen years ago)
xp And I was on the el by then. :(
― jaymc, Monday, 21 July 2008 15:27 (sixteen years ago)
yeah... the cut copy half-set was super awesome. what a crowd response.
not to mention seeing jay reatard stick a flower between his butt cheeks beforehand... butt i digress...
tnv and dodos were great. then the b stage finale.
― msp, Monday, 21 July 2008 17:02 (sixteen years ago)
Best shit from Sunday: Boris (with a gong and a smoke machine) Occidental Brothers Spiritualized (ending their set with "Come Together" and "Take Me to the Other Side") Dinosaur Jr (no, really)
― Bill in Chicago, Monday, 21 July 2008 17:55 (sixteen years ago)
Flav, first rule of indie cred: don't cross-market your vh1 reality show.
I think he was cross-marketing his terrible-looking sitcom where he lives with an "uptight" "nerdy" guy wearing second-hand Carlton Banks wardrobe from the Fresh Prince archives
― nabisco, Monday, 21 July 2008 18:28 (sixteen years ago)
I.e., even worse
― Bill in Chicago, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 00:59 (sixteen years ago)
i decided to do touristy shit around chicago instead of seeing times new viking
looking forward to the p4k tv videos though
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 22 July 2008 01:11 (sixteen years ago)
i thought the lineup was really slanted towards saturday and i was beat from standing all day sat and generally walking all weekend so i just chilled out b/w the two stages
les savy fav sounded w/e, i think tim harrington is kind of obnoxious dodos were cool i guess m. ward sounded nice as i was laying in the shade, couldn't imagine that i'd be excited to see him if i was standing in the 90 degree heat amongst thousands of ppl ghost and rae were about as good as expected + it was just cool to literally see them caught the last bit of bon iver which sounded pretty cool as well, good timing for him to play im gonna see cut copy in sept so i wasn't totally bummed about them not playing their full set. i actually felt worse for them since i think only playing 30 mins is in a way worse than not playing at all. only thing is that ant any subsequent show it will be impossible to replicate their really great mini-set from last night since it came at the end of a long weekend and it was outside and basically like a rave. spoon was tight as always and surprisingly loud (again)
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 22 July 2008 01:16 (sixteen years ago)
les savy fav sounded w/e
― Bill in Chicago, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 22:02 (sixteen years ago)
Best set I saw all weekend.
― jaymc, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 22:13 (sixteen years ago)
Boris (with a gong and a smoke machine)
It was awesome to see Boris with both of those at the Empty Bottle Sunday night.
I didn't end up going to Pfork this year, sounds like I missed some good performances.

just cause i've always wanted to see them live and never have
Almost half of Saturday's lineup (Dizzee Rascal, Vampire Weekend, Animal Collective) showed up in Toronto on Sunday for a smaller festival.
