You were stuck in San Antonio and missed an awesome concert.

Amazing, as usual for Epistrophy shows. Little City is tiny - I'd say the audience was only about 50 people, but you could still almost say the place was packed. Wierbos played a mindblowing solo set to start. The guy can make a trombone do or sound like anything - just an unbelievable bag of tricks including (but not limited to) circle breathing, bird calls, digeridu-type drones and overtones, the usual collection of slide and mute wah and smear manuevers, insanely fast runs, stuff that sounded like those crazy buddhist throat-singing monks and mongolians, quick series of staccato blats that you'd swear were a percussion instrument...good gravy, I can't even remember all the stuff he did, but it was absolutely enthralling. Then, after what I'm guessing was a long (half hour-forty minutes maybe) free solo improv, he took a break and came back for the trio part of the show. Alex Coke was amazing, too, as usual, switching up between tenor sax, piccolo, and alto flute. After the show he told me that he switched away from the alto because he was concerned people like me in the back wouldn't be able to hear it, but it was clear as a bell for me. Cogburn I hadn't heard before, but someone else said he sounded a bit like Sunny Murray, and I'd have to agree - free jazz nerds know this is a very good thing indeed.
Coming up in April - Peter Brotzmann and Han Bennink! Pedro mentioned the venue, but I can't remember now. Right around taxtime, too. MAke sure you have the night off NOW. Uh, as soon as we have the exact date. I want to say 16, but I'm not 100% sure.

Verbosity provided my favorite musical moment of 2004, the solo show he gave at the now sadly defunct Hothouse in Chicago (RIP)

I've seen both those guys before (/brag) and they each put on amazing shows. Even if I've never heard of the act Pedro brings in I always try to go. Dude just knows his out-the-way music. It constantly amazes me the acts he gets to come here and play in tiny cafes or church basements or whatever.

1. Your boss has non-consensual sexual relations with scavenger rodents
2. Maybe you can hit the guys up for a soundboard tape or something.
